The Aliwagwag Protected Landscape is a protected area that preserves a major drainage catchment in the southern Philippine island of Mindanao in the Davao Region. It contains the headwaters of the Cateel River in the southern Diuata Mountain Range which provides the water source and irrigation for surrounding rice fields and communities in Davao Oriental and Compostela Valley provinces. It was named after the remote rural village in the municipality of Cateel where Aliwagwag Falls, the country's highest waterfall, is located.The protected landscape is part of the Philippines' National Integrated Protected Areas System and was established in 2011 through Proclamation No. 139 issued by President Benigno Aquino III. It was initially a component of the 1,927,400-hectare Agusan–Davao–Surigao Forest Reserve declared in 1931 through Proclamation No. 369 by Governor-General Dwight F. Davis which underwent several amendments over the years to open up a few areas in the mineral rich watershed to mining.

Cateel is the home of the Aliwagwag Falls, located at barangay Aliwagwag within the Aliwagwag Protected Landscape. It is a towering waterfalls considered by hydraulic engineers as the highest in the country and regarded as one of the most beautiful falls in Mindanao. It is a series of 84 falls appearing like stairway to heaven with various heights among the steps ranging from 2 to 33.5 metres (7 to 110 ft). One step is measured 22 metres (72 ft) and another is 20 metres (66 ft). Overall Aliwagwag Falls has a height of 340 metres (1,120 ft) and a width of 20 metres (66 ft). All these in the midst of virgin forest, with a river at the foot of the falls. 13 rapids to cross.

Wow! That was a feeling of triumph. The exhaustion, back pains, and the butt-numbing of our long way of travel, it gives a relief, when we arrived at this place.
One thing that astounded me on this environment was the waterfalls were just, within the roadside. And it is a rare situation, since when we say “waterfalls”, one thing that pops up on our heads, is that you have to walk for a distance, do a river trekking, and as well as mountain climbing.
But not on this set, when you want to go on this place all you have to do, is to take ride and there you go, the Aliwagwag Falls Eco Park. Just a little bit of walking, no river trekking, “slight bit of mountain climbing”, I must say that, since the place is an Eco Park.

That was one of the messages I received from a Filipino for my #BecomingFilipino journey. WOW!! Was I ever happy that I followed that message and ended up in Cateel, Davao Oriental! To think just two years ago the town and people in the area were hit hard by Typhoon Pablo... I can only imagine what they have been through... but adventuring around the area I am so proud of their attitudes and happiness towards life!

Cateel is stunning! It has some absolutely EPIC waterfalls! I am not going to say anymore...
