Fort Wayne’s Central High School (1922 – 1971) boasts one of the City’s powerful historical narratives. In Fort Wayne’s past, this high school wielded considerable influence in terms of academic excellence, athletic dominance, and the desegregation of secondary education in the Summit City.
According to the introduction of the Central High School Golden Anniversary book in the collection of the Allen County Public Library, the introductory essay is deeply informative. In an essay written Central’s former Principal, Mr. Fred H. Croninger, the school was originally called “Fort Wayne High and Manual Training School” between 1904 and 1922 and was for some time the only high school in the City of Fort Wayne. The name remained until the building of a second school, South Side High School, occurred, at which point the downtown building was formally named Central High School. Five years later, Croninger writes, it was then logical to give the third school the name North Side High School. Central High School’s history began, according to this author, when earlier iterations of the institution were moved to the corner of Lewis and Barr Streets in 1904.
At the time South Side High School was built, Central had 75 instructors and 2300 students. The seeding of South Side saw Central lose all but 1200 students, but 5 years later, when North Side High School was built there were 2008 students at Central. Changes in Indiana law making education compulsory for all young people under the age of 16 drove a dramatic expansion of the curriculum at Central High School, resulting in courses in the arts, choral singing, dress design, foods, home economics, two years of foreign language, one year of algebra, and a single year of geometry. Croninger recalled when Central was the only high school in the City.
