Grenoble, Bastille : A nearest 40 minutes hike to Bastille, in the city of Grenoble, Rhone Alpes
The Bastille is a fortress at 476 m, located at the south end of the Chartreuse mountain range. The most interesting things is its location and as it is overlooking the city of Grenoble, and gives the best glimpse of mountains around the city and the city itself and you are close to nature.......If you are ever stopping by in Grenoble for at least a day or so its a must do activity..!
One could also take cable car for to come back to the city if you are too tired...Enjoy :)

There was a 60euros difference in Tolls. Exactly same distance and even less fuel consumption over this route.

Grenoble, a beautiful town in southeast France, shines next to the French Alps with the beautiful river and scenery. The old castle of Bastile, that can be reached with a teleferique, towers over the old city and shows the historical relevance of the city (more than 2000 years). Also, with 4 scientific universities residing there, it can be considered as a student town.

A short, day trip to Bastille, one of the remarkable forts in France. This fort is situated in the northern part of Grenoble at the height of 476 m. This fortress was built by the Lesdiguières, head of the Huguenots in the Dauphiné. He took control of this city and overthrew the Roman Catholics. I did a short hike from the river to the base of the fort.

This program shows quickly main areas in each city visited with popular monuments in the city. Also, Dicover European Cities program will cover each city by less than a 5 minutes video. Grenoble is a city of around 550,000 inhabitants located in south-eastern France, in the Rhône-Alpes region that encompasses the French Alps.
The climate is quite cold in winter, with days of snow almost every year. Summers are known to be hot, as mountains surrounding the town stop any wind.
Grenoble is crossed by two rivers, the Drac and the Isère, and is surrounded by three mountain chains, the Vercors, Chartreuse and Belledonne.

Reaching Grenoble
Air
There are three airports near Grenoble:
Grenoble Isère Airport
Also known as St Geoirs,is a small low-cost airport. Flights are more frequent in the ski season.
easyJet and ryanair and Norwegian Airlines offer flights.
Lyon Airport
Also known as Saint Exupéry formerly is farther away, about 100 km (1 h by bus, car or train).
Geneva Airport
Geneva Airport, 157 km from Grenoble, is a usual destination of many flight companies, and can be cheaper than Lyon airport.
Car
• A41, Geneva 1hour and a half(via Chambery)
• A48, Lyon 1 hour

Grenoble can be difficult to navigate by car, but once you get there the Park and Ride (parking relais) system operated by Semitag-parking is a good way of getting around. (see trams and buses)
Train
Several high speed trains (TGV) from SNCF:
-Paris to Grenoble directly every day, for a three-hour trip of 640 km.
-Lyon (Part-Dieu station) This takes around an 1h15 to 1h30 with the TER (regional trains)
-Geneva in Switzerland 2 hours from the Cornavain station in Geneva's center.

-Budget-restaurants: Tacos de Lyon in Sainte-Claire and Tandoori Express.
-Average-Restaurants: Restaurants in Place Grenette like Sporting, Au Bureau,and Cafe Laffe
-High-end restaurants: Auberge Napoléon, Restaurant L'Epicurien.

Grenoble is a city at the foot of the French Alps where the river Drac joins the Isère. Located in the Rhône-Alpes region, Grenoble is the capital of the department of Isère. The city advertises itself as the Capital of the Alps, due its size and its proximity to the mountains. Grenoble's history goes back more than 2,000 years, at a time when it was a small Gallic village. It gained somewhat in stature by becoming the capital of the Dauphiné in the 11th century, but Grenoble remained for most of its history a modest parliamentary and garrison city on the borders of the kingdom of France.
The Bastille, an ancient series of fortifications on the mountainside overlooking Grenoble on the northern side is visible from many points in the city. The Bastille is one of Grenoble's most visited tourist attractions and provides a good vantage point over the town below and the surrounding mountains. Although the Bastille was begun in the Middle Ages, later years saw extensive additions, including a semi-underground defense network. The Bastille has been credited as the most extensive example of early 18th-century fortifications in all of France and then held an important strategic point on the Alpine frontier with the Kingdom of Savoy. The first cable transport system, installed on the Bastille in 1875, was built by the Porte de France Cement Company for freight. This cable transport system connected a quarry on Mount Jalla, just over the bastille, and Grenoble. It was abandoned in the early 20th century Since 1934, the Bastille has been the destination of the Grenoble-Bastille Cable Car. This system of egg-shaped cable cars known to locals as Les Bulles (the bubbles) provides the occupants with an excellent view over the Isère River. At the top are two restaurants and installed in the casemates of the fort itself since June 2006, the Bastille Art Centre allows visitors to see contemporary art exhibitionsa. There is also a small military museum on mountain troops (Musée des troupes de montagne).
Palace of the Parliament of Dauphiné : This palace was constructed Place Saint André, around 1500 and extended in 1539. It was the location of the Parlement of Dauphiné until the French Revolution. It then became a courthouse until 2002.
Museum of Grenoble : The city's most prized museum, the Museum of Grenoble ((French) Musée de Grenoble), welcomes 200,000 visitors a year. The Museum of Grenoble is above all renowned for its collection of paintings that covers all artistic evolutions.
Situated on the right bank of the Isère, on Place Saint-Laurent, the Grenoble Archaeological Museum presents the archaeological excavations done on its location. The vestiges date back all the way to the 3rd century AD and provide a timeline of the history of Christianity in the region.

Getting to Grenoble is easy from many French and European Towns thanks to Ouibus. Ouibus is a budget bus company which allows short and long distance travel for a very good price! (perfect for student budgets!). We travelled Lyon - Grenoble return. If you have yet to try Ouibus, use this link below to get 5 Euros of your first trip! I also receive 5 Euros when you ride, however, as I am no longer in Europe this won't benefit me at all :) Valid until the 30th of April 2018.

The city is dramatically sited among the looming massifs of the Parc Naturel Régional de Chartreuse and Parc Naturel Régional du Vercors, with clear sight lines to Mont Blanc itself. Chamonix-Mont-Blanc or, more commonly, Chamonix is a commune in the Haute-Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region in south-eastern France. It was the site of the 1924 Winter Olympics, the first Winter Olympics. The commune's population of around 9,800 ranks 865th within the country of France.
Situated near the massive peaks of the Aiguilles Rouges, Chamonix shares the summit of Mont Blanc with its neighboring commune of Courmayeur in Italy, and owns the title of highest commune in France.
