Iceland - 5 Days in February 2017!
This video is a mash up of a 5 day trip we took in Iceland from Feb 1 through Feb 6 2017. It was our first trip to Iceland but we did a bunch of research in preparation to the trip so that we could maximize our time on the island. We rented a car from Sad Cars, they were great to work with. Here is a run down of the day to day action.
Day 1 - We land at KEF around 5am. A very nice man from Sad Cars picks us up from the airport and we are on our way to their office (10 min car ride) to grab our rental. After that we directly drive from KEF to Jokulsarlon Ice Lagoon. In Feb in Iceland the sun doesnt rise until 10 AM so we tried to get their for sunrise but were a little late arriving around 11 AM. After that we worked our way back on the 1 to Svartifoss. After our hike at Svartifoss we continued working our way back to Vik and the black sand beach of Reynisfjara. Stayed at the Puffin Hotel in Vik (Great little hotel).
Day 2 - Left the hotel around 8 AM and headed to Dyrholaey Arch. It was still a bit dark and it was super windy and rainy up there but still was beautiful to see. After that we drove to the DC3 Plane wreck parking lot and had about a 2 hour total hike to the wreck. Then we proceed to drive to Skogafoss. After that we continued to a nice man made pool in the middle of the mountains for a nice swim. After drying off we drove to Seljalandsfoss. From there we drove to a nice little hot spring in Hruni. Finally we finished the day seeing Gullfoss and Geysir. Stayed at Geysir Hotel. This was a very long and compact day. Kind of hectic but totally worth it.
Day 3 - We left our hotel at Geysir and headed to Thingvellir National Park to see the GoT spot where they shot the Gate of the Eyrie. After that we headed to a tiny hole in the ground hot spring that was truly epic. From that hot spring we headed around the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, heading north towards kirkjufellsfoss. From that waterfall we headed to the tip of the peninsula to Saxholl Crater. We stopped plenty of times during this drive because the views were just unreal. After Saxholl we headed to our AirBnB for the night in Borgarnes.
Day 4 - Drove from Borgarnes to Reykjavik. Stayed in Reykjavik for the day/night and watched the Superbowl @ the American Bar (was the only bar that was allowed to be open that late, the game started at 11pm). Since we were in Reykjavik on a Sunday parking was free, that was a nice perk.
Day 5 - We drove from Reykjavik to the Blue Lagoon for 9 AM. After that we drove around the Rekjanes Peninsula. We saw many different sites including Brimketill and the Bridge Between Continents. Finally we dropped off our rental at Sad Cars and then they drove us back to the airport for our flight leaving to Boston @ 4:30 PM.
Overall Iceland is truly an unbelievable place and this video doesn't do it justice. If you are thinking of going, do it!

Iceland Vlog: Day 11 (Stykkisholmur and Kirkjufell Mountain)
Welcome to day 11 of our fantastic Iceland trip.
Day 11:
- We had breakfast at the campsite with amazing views of the sea.
- After filling up the car with petrol, we started our long drive south. Our first stop being the beautiful town of Stykkisholmur.
- We visited the harbour of Stykkisholmur, a typical fishing village, with nice cafés and restaurants, as well as a really nice souvenir shop. We walked up the hill behind the harbour to a lookout and lighthouse were located, such spectacular views!
- We continued onwards and while driving, saw some Icelandic horses next to the road, we stopped fed them and took some photos, it was amazing, they are such a beautiful animal and the symbol of Iceland, that and the puffin, of course.
- Our next stop was Kirkjufell mountain, famous amongst landscape photographers and the most photographed mountain in all of Iceland. I got the shot I wanted and we also met a really nice American couple and chatted about our Iceland experiences.
- Our last stop was Olafsvik Campground, a simple campsite but with amazing views, and we were welcomed with a beautiful sunset.

Day 8 - After staying the night in the town of Borgarnes, our plan for day 8 was to check out the Snæfellsnes National Park. Once packed and ready to go, we headed north towards our first stop, Gerðuberg Cliffs. These perfectly shaped hexagonal basalt columns run along the cliff. We were able to climb up close to the base of the columns where I sat on basalt ledges and appeared up at its height. The next hike of the day occurred at Bjarnarfoss. This impressive waterfall is located right by road 54 on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. As we looked at the waterfall from the parking lot, we knew that it would be more exciting to get up closer.
The hike to the waterfall was quite tricky. There were many created paths to follow and all seemed to have difficulties with steepness. Once at the top, the view of the meandering river and ability to stand by the cascading water was incredible. As we continued driving to our next destination, we decided to stop at a nearby black sand beach where the majestic Snæfellsjökull glacier was in site. This volcano is one of the most famous sites in Iceland. This volcano caused the remnants of the Lóndrangar sea stacks. These ancient basalt volcanic dikes stick out from the sea and are the remains of a crater, which has been eroded to its current shape. The next stop was the small town of Arnarstapi. Consisting of a harbour, basalt sea cliffs, and Mt. Stapafell, we walked along a path that lead us to the arch where we took photos and videos walking across. The task was fairly daunting at first once you consider that there isn't much beneath you but water. However, the pictures of this moment are amazing and a must. From here we drove to a few well known churches, the Búðakirkja Church and Ingjaldshóll Church. The Búðakirkja Church is pure black, isloated, and sits on a lava field. Its uniqueness in colour and location make the church a popular attraction. The present Ingjaldshóll church was built in 1903 and is the oldest concrete church of the country, perhaps even the world. I was able to capture the church at a distance in the field of purple flowers, which created a beautifully composed shot. As we passed wild horses and sheep along our drive, we arrived at our last stop of the day which proved to be the busiest. Kirkjufell, or 'Church Mountain', is a distinctly shaped symmetrical mountain on the north shore of Snæfellsnes Peninsula. The free standing mountain in the background and the Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall in the foreground create a spectacular image. The only difficulty was waiting for the crowds to walk past to capture it. Our adventure around the Snæfellsnes Peninsula was completed with one of the most well-known sites in all of Iceland. Our airbnb for the night was located near the airport in Keflavík, which took about 3 hours to get to.
Day 9 - After traveling around the whole island, our day spent in Keflavík was a quiet one. We spent most of the day resting up for the journey home as some of us felt under the weather. We did manage to drive into the capital city of Reykjavík to see a few sites. The main landmark that we saw was Hallgrímskirkja church. The church is notably distinct for its fascinating features that emulate shapes and forms created when lava cools into basalt rock. The inside was quite stark with concrete features, but the massive pipe organ catches your eye. Once outside, a statue of Leifur Eiríksson, the first European to discover America, stands in front of the church. At this point, I was able to take numerous photos of the towering landmark. After this, we headed back to our airbnb to rest before going to the Secret Solstice festival that night. This final event signified the end of our trip as on day 10 we returned the rental car and went to the airport to leave Iceland.

5-Days in Iceland | Gülfoss to Oxarafoss via Strokkur | Thingvellir | Iceland | Part 3 of 4
Driving through the paradise that is Iceland...
In this video, we cover the 3rd part of our travel. We started from our small farm/guest house in a small village about an hours drive west of Selfoss. The day's itinerary was to cover the famous Gulfoss - a really wide rapid waterfall, and the Strokurr geyser - that periodically erupted, throwing out hot water from the earth below. it was the first time in our trip that it was pretty sunny, and we were lucky to witness the rainbow over Gulfoss - something that amazed us greatly.
A quick lunch later, we started our drive towards Reykjavik through the Thingvellir National Park, where the historical 1st parliament of Iceland was situated. The park, lying in a valley between the mid-Atlantic ridge, provides one with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to touch the continental plates of Europe and America at once. Nearing nightfall, we took our halt at an inconspicuous little waterfall, the Oxarafoss, hidden between two rock walls. The hues of the sky and the soft gurgling of the water was something unforgettable. At the end of our day's drive, we reached Reykjavik for a much-needed sleep for the next day's drive up to the snow-capped mountains.
