Amsterdam, Citywalk - Netherlands HD Travel Channel
During a walk through the city center, we collected our first impressions of Amsterdam, Netherlands.
By metro we reached the Nieuwmarkt, where a small carnival takes place. In the middle of the square is an old city gate. The city was crowded with locals and tourists and the preparations for the Koninginnedag, Dutch national holiday, were in full swing. For the time being this will be the last Koninginnedag; Queen Beatrix will place the responsibility for the country in the hands of her son, King Willem Alexander. Within the next years, the Koningsdag (Kings day) will be on April 26th, the birthday of Willem-Alexander.
Amsterdam has more than 1500 bridges, which picturesquely span over the canals. In 2013, Amsterdam celebrates the 400th anniversary of the canals.
Along the Kloveniers Voorburgwal we reach the Raamgracht and the Rembrandt House Museum. For a while, we watch what happens on the Sluyswacht.
With the metro, we arrive the Central Station, the central hub of Amsterdam. The brick building in the style of the dutch renaissance was designed by the architect P.J.H. Cuypers; it has the shape of a town gate with two towers
Along the Damrak we proceed to the Dam, the place with the royal palace, which was formerly a town hall, and the Nieuwe Kerk, where the kings and queens of the Netherlands are listed on a banner.

“This was the longest boarded up street of Europe. It was an abandoned place. It was all about heroin and cocaine back then”
These tours provide mutual understanding between residents and people who live on the streets. It helps the guides to work on their self-confidence, dignity and independence so they can take back responsibility for their lives.

“The best thing about my job is when i provide information to schools. When I talk with the students and someone asks me: “how did your parents react?” At that moment iI know he is experimenting [with drugs]. Then I talk to that student one-on-one. If i can help someone to stay away from drugs, then it is successful to me.”

Amsterdam and Haarlem: Two Great Dutch Cities
I loved the Netherlands. Amsterdam is a great live and let live city, whose system seems to work pretty well. The Jordaan neighborhood (where the Anne Frank house is) was my favorite section of Amsterdam as it had a small town feel, within a big city. The Red Light District lived up to the hype, though I doubt I would spend much time there if I were a local. And yes, I visited a coffee shop.
Amsterdam, Grachten Tour - Netherlands HD Travel Channel
The Grachten, as the canals are called in Amsterdam, have a total length of approx.80 km and are more than twice as long as the canals of Venice, with a length of approx. 34 km. Approx. 1500 bridges span the canals of Amsterdam.
The smaller boats allow to sail through the narrower canals and open up completely new perspectives on the city. The Grachten-Tour (canal-tour) leads from the Damrak to the center and continue south to the Prinsengracht.
Besides the Chinatown, the only one in a major European city in which the street names are additionally labeled in Chinese, we sail along the medieval looking Red Light District. The water surface in Amsterdam is 40 cm below sea level.
Another peculiarity in Amsterdam is the type of renovation of old houses. Almost all the houses in Amsterdam are built on stilts. If one side sinks in sandy underground, then the house will be stabilized but the redevelopment of the house is carried out based on the status quo. Sloping windows remain at an angle and windows get horizontal window crosses.
In some streets, a house inclines to the right, the next to the left. These houses are called the dancing houses. Some façades are built consciously at an angle forwards in order to appear larger when someone looks upwards.
In addition to many well-preserved house boats you can see some almost dilapidated boats. This is due to the fact, that one loses the berth if no boat is moored. Nowadays, a berth is partly worth more than the boat.

Planning a trip to Amsterdam? Learn about the top places to visit and what makes them special in this travel video. Recommended attractions include The Museumplein (The Museum Square); the Blumenmarkt, or Flower Market; and of course a tour of the Anne Frank House.
Amsterdam is, above all, a city to take your time exploring and soaking in the atmosphere. But that isn’t to say there aren’t places you should go out of your way to visit. At about 160, Amsterdam has even more canals than Venice. You probably won’t have time to cross all the bridges, but you can still get the most out of the canals by taking a cruise–which happens to be the best way to take in Amsterdam’s beautiful, historic architecture. If you visit Amsterdam in spring or summer, the Blumenmarkt, or Flower Market, is a must. Even if you don’t buy any of Holland’s famous tulips, it’s worth it to see the colorful flower stalls on the houseboats floating on the Singel canal. Museumplein, or the Museum Square, is where you’ll find the beautiful green Vondelpark and three of Amsterdam’s best museums–the Van Gogh Museum, the Stedelijk Museum, and the Rijksmuseum. It’s also where you’ll find the Concertgebouw, where you can hear the Royal Orchestra play. It would be a mistake to go to Amsterdam and skip the Anne Frank House. The historical building where Anne and her family hid during World War II offers a close look into her life, struggles, and personality. Take your time on your way to these places; central Amsterdam is small enough that you can see all of it easily, and there’s something interesting around every corner.

Amsterdam Travel
Amsterdam Travel - Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands. With more than one million inhabitants in its urban area, it is the country's largest city and its financial, cultural, and creative center. Amsterdam is colloquially known as Venice of the North, because of its lovely canals that criss-cross the city, its impressive architecture and more than 1,500 bridges. There is something for every traveler's taste here, whether you prefer culture and history, serious partying, or just the relaxing charm of an old European city.
Settled as a small fishing village in the late 12th century, Amsterdam became one of the most important trading centers in the world during the Dutch Golden Age of the 17th century. The city's small medieval center rapidly expanded as the Jordaan and the Canal District were constructed; the latter's cultural significance was acknowledged when it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the city expanded in all directions, with many new neighborhoods and suburbs designed in modernist styles.
Amsterdam is not the seat of the government, which is in The Hague. Partly because of this, the city has an informal atmosphere unlike other capital cities its size. In fact, Amsterdam has a history of non-conformism, tolerance and progressivism, all of which come together in its liberal policies concerning cannabis and prostitution. Attractions include the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Anne Frank House, Magere Brug, Albert Cuyp Market and the Vondelpark.
