Williwa Lakes trail
Williwaw Lakes is a popular hiking and camping destination in the mountains of Chugach State Parks near Anchorage Alaska. There are several routes you can take to reach the lakes. This video shows you how to get there from Glenn Alps parking lot, the distance is about 6 miles one way via the normal Williwaw Lakes Trail route. One can also head up O'Malley Peak's Ball Park plateau with some steep elevation gain, one should be sure footed for this route. This video also shows you what that route looks like as we returned back to Glenn Alps via that route. Another route up there is from Prospect Heights parking lot, this route adds a mile or so one way, and shares the Williwaw Lates trail section show here.
This is a nice Trail Map of the Chugach State Park offered by the Department of Natural Resources. You can keep it on your phone as a file so that you a useful map with elevation contour lines of places in the park.

Caines Head Day Trip
May 16, 2012. I walked out on a 5:30 am low tide and hung around Fort McGilvray until it was time to head back to Seward at about 4:30 pm. Except for the beach sections, the trail conditions were pretty tough, lots of tiring postholing. A beautiful day, and I didn't see a single other person the whole time.

As we journey the the ancient Gilabend ancient community we have discovered the most unique and interesting Petroglyphs to date . We have encountered incredible animals , egyptian and mayan styles and beautiful modern Arcade styles . The O’odham (people) of central and southern Arizona are represented by four separate federally recognized tribal governments that include O’odham of the Gila River Indian Com- munity, the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, the Ak-Chin Indian Community, and the Tohono O’odham Nation. O’odham of the Tohono O’odham Nation also hold lands at San Lucy in Gila Bend, Florence Village west of Florence, and the San Xavier District Community in Tucson. The O’odham have a familial relationship of shared cultural group identity that can be traced historically and prehistorically to the Huhugam who inhabited central and southern Arizona, as well as the northern region of present-day Mexico.
The O’odham, in accordance with their story of creation, have inhabited their lands from the beginning of existence of human life in central and southern Arizona. The O’odham have a reverence for the natural landscape that is central to O’odham traditional and spiritual un- derstanding of, and respect for, the natural resources and vast ecosystem. This unique rela- tionship enabled O’odham ancestors to live harmoniously within this harsh desert environ- ment, and this relationship is essential to the continued survival of O’odham Himdag (Way of Life).
The proposed boundary of the Great Bend of the Gila National Monument encompasses numerous archaeological sites attributed to ancient Huhugam farmers. Many Huhugam petro- glyph sites are located from the Gillespie Dam through Sears Point. These places hold ancient teachings on stone that document traditional religious use of the region since the precontact days of our Huhugam ancestors. O’odham Traditional Religious Practitioners, in private reli- gious activities, continue to conduct ancient rituals and ceremonies at these places.
Prehistorically, the Huhugam shared southern Arizona with peoples of the Patayan tradi- tion, who are the ancestors of present-day Yuman Tribes along the lower Colorado River. Among the descendant Yuman Tribes are the Yavapai-Apache Nation, Yavapai Prescott In- dian Tribe, Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation, Cocopah Indian Tribe, Fort Mojave Tribe, Fort Yuma Quechan Tribe, Colorado River Indian Tribes, and Maricopa (Pee Posh) Indian Tribe. The Pee Posh have a separate and distinct culture, history, and language from the O’odham. Historically, the Pee Posh have lived beside the O’odham since the 1800s, and reside in the Gila River Indian Community and the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.
Archaeological sites define and establish the connections O’odham have with their Huhugam ancestors. The spiritual, reverent, and respectful associations assist in maintaining our links

to these ancestral and sacred places. Spiritual associations to sacred places in the landscape define the existence and extent of the O’odham world. Set-net Fishing, West Cook Inlet, Alaska
Commercial salmon set-net fishing in Western Cook Inlet, Alaska. Local television stations have been demonizing the set-net fishery for overfishing, publishing video of sein and drift fishermen hauling in big loads of king salmon with automated equipment. Bob Penny's well-funded Alaska Fisheries Conservation Alliance Inc. is badgering Alaska Legislators to ban portions of the Alaska set-net fishery. Contrary to manufactured public opinion, set-net fishing consists of small, family operations using predominantly manual labor in open skiffs like this one. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADFG) places limits on the hours of set-net operations, the days they can fish, as well as the number of nets, distance, net size, and tensile strength. King salmon punch right on through set-nets, which are securely anchored in place. Drift nets, dip nets, and seins, on the other hand, baggy nets are pretty much required to catch kings. As you can see, these are red salmon, not king salmon being caught. The lack of stock footage of set-net operations is no excuse for publishing false and misleading information about the industry, especially when videos like this one are available and freely-licensed Creative Commons for broadcast, and attribution.
Furthermore, set-net fishermen play an essential role in managing the fish stocks, since statehood. Their proximity to rivers and streams help regulators manage overpopulation by responsivel to emergency openings, providing accurate catch records, and being their eyes and ears as part of the ecosystem. Overfishing is not a problem with red salmon. As is often the case, rivers can be inundated by too many red salmon, destroying feed stocks and polluting waters with waste and die-offs. Regulators routinely open red salmon set-netting 24-hours during peak runs. Even with Alaska's top-notch regulators, and responsive population control provided by set-netters over-escapement has been a problem in some years.
This is a remote fishing location, not affected by the set-net ban, but fishermen support one another with the understanding that it could happen to them. This is primarily a commercial fishing location, but sport fishing is possible. Expeditions must be well-planned due to extreme remoteness. Navigational, extreme tides, shoals, rocks, mud flats, quicksand, bears, exposure, and other hazards continue to be a frequent cause of death.

Drive along Highway 101 on Washington State’s Olympic Peninsula, just outside of Forks—home of Twilight vampires—and you’ll see a roadside monument, of sorts. The curious slow down and waver: take the road toward the improbable tower or keep to the planned schedule?
I stopped and met John Anderson, a retired plumber and 40-plus-year veteran of beachcombing. Last year, he opened the first North American beachcombing museum. Housed in what was once Anderson’s plumbing workshop, the collection typifies humanity’s peculiar relationship with stuff—from the age of organic pollution to the age of plastic pollution.
There is beauty to be found in the handwritten letters stuffed into glass bottles, in the Japanese glass fishing floats, and in the wavy lines of the ancient fossilized mollusks. There is a ghoulishness too: a candy-colored collection of plastic doll heads; hard hats that once sat on the heads of unknown laborers; the encrusted bristles of the most personal of items—toothbrushes. John’s Beachcombing Museum has it all.
More than anything, Anderson’s museum has an unambiguous record of how humans treat the ocean.

2500 miles camping from Palo Alto, CA to Bellevue, WA, then to Vancouver, Canada and back along Hwy 101. Camped at Harris Beach State Park, Beverly Beach State Park, Cape Lookout State Park, Coho Campground and Staircase Campground at the Olympic National Park. Took the ferry from Bainbridge Island to Seattle. Visited Ballard Street in Seattle, Vancouver, and Woodenville. On the way back, stopped at several National Wildlife Reserves in Washington and Oregon. Beautiful!
