Varanasi (Hindustani pronunciation: [ʋaːˈraːɳəsi] ( listen)), also known as Benares , Banaras (Banāras [bəˈnaːrəs] ( listen)), or Kashi (Kāśī [ˈkaːʃi] ( listen)), is an North Indian city on the banks of the Ganga in Uttar Pradesh, 320 kilometres (200 mi) south-east of the state capital, Lucknow. It is the holiest of the seven sacred cities (Sapta Puri) in Hinduism and Jainism, and played an important role in the development of Buddhism. Some Hindus believe that death at Varanasi brings salvation. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Varanasi is also known as the favourite city of the Hindu deity Lord Shiva . It has been mentioned in the Rigveda that this city in older times was known as Kashi .][not in citation given]
The Kashi Naresh (Maharaja of Kashi) is the chief cultural patron of Varanasi, and an essential part of all religious celebrations. The culture of Varanasi is closely associated with the Ganges. The city has been a cultural centre of North India for several thousand years, and has a history that is older than most of the major world religions. The Benares Gharana form of Hindustani classical music was developed in Varanasi, and many prominent Indian philosophers, poets, writers, and musicians live or have lived in Varanasi. Gautama Buddha gave his first sermon at Sarnath, located near Varanasi.
Varanasi is the spiritual capital of India. It is often referred to as the holy city of India, the religious capital of India, the city of Shiva, and the city of learning. Scholarly books have been written in the city, including the Ramcharitmanas of Tulsidas. Today, there is a temple in the city, the Tulsi Manas Mandir. The current temples and religious institutions in the city are dated to the 18th century.[9] One of the largest residential universities of Asia, the Banaras Hindu University (BHU), is located here.
Varanasi has been chosen as one of the heritage cities for HRIDAY - Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana scheme of Government of India.

#Varanasi #Benares #incredibleindia #indiatravel #ganges
City of many names, Banaras as it is most commonly called, was officially renamed in 1956 as Varanasi. It was first known as Kashi, the city of light, when it was the capital of the kingdom of the same name about 500 B.C. for over 2000 years, Banaras, the eternal city, has been the religious capital of India.
Built on the banks of sacred Ganga, it is said to combine the virtues of all other places of pilgrimage and anyone who ends his earthly cycle here is said to be transported straight to heaven.
Banaras was also celebrated as the place where the most profound wisdom dwelt, the seat of all enlightenment and learning. Its permanent advantages include the highest sanctity, fertile soil, and its location on a great river. Hindu rulers built great palaces, temples and ghats in the city.
It is one of the oldest living cities in the world and the ultimate pilgrimage for hindus who believe that to die in the city is to attain instant salvation.

A Tourist's Guide to Varanasi, India
From Mumbai, I fly SpiceJet to the holy city of Varanasi, located on the banks of the River Ganges. More or less as soon as I drop my bags off at the hotel, I'm on the back of a motorbike to see the sights. Varanasi is the most mental city I have ever visited and I loved every second!

Walking in Varanasi 2019: life in the streets of India's holiest city
A short video I made while walking around the streets and along the Ganges river in Varanasi, India. Varanasi is one of India's seven holy cities, and presumably the holiest of all. It is located on the bank of the holy Ganges River in the state of Uttar Pradesh. Religious Hindus flock there from all over the country to participate in eerie sacred rituals and burn their dead on the famous crematoria on the Ganges bank.

Night Walks - Varanasi, Episode 1 Fire
Varanasi - the Holy City
Varanasi, the Holy City, remains a city steeped in religious fervour. While tourists are very welcome, it is a city primarily for pilgrims, many of whom come to Varanasi solely so that they can die in a holy place.

Exploring Varanasi in India - The Ghats, River, Streets and Markets
I spend the day exploring the Indian City of Varanasi, the Ghats the river Ganges, the people, the markets and the animals.
I get a cycle rickshaw back to were we where yesterday. A go alone as today is a rest day so we are all left to our own devices until 17:00 when we go on the river for a flower ceremony (the boat strike finished today).
I spend a good few hours walking up and down the river taking photos of everything, people, boats, animals, buildings and clothes.
I don't want to seem cynical but this place is totally different to what I expected, I mean this place is meant to be the centre of religion for many people yet it is full of hawkers trying to sell you anything from postcards, make up, scalfs, boat rides and even drugs. One person even wanted to buy my hat. Even if you point your camera in the general direction of a local they demand money. Maybe about 40 years ago in more innocent times it truly was a spiritual city but now I just see an over commercialised location preying on tourists.
I saw a number of funerals taking place in the first area there was five and the second there was seven. I even saw a body being dumped into the river, this was because they were younger than 15 years old. I respect the family wishes and refrain from taking any photographs to show the people back home.
I head back to the hotel by auto rickshaw at around 14:00 and have a couple of cokes in the restaurant and surf the internet for a while in the cyber café just outside.

Holy city Varanasi
Lord Siva said, every man could reach nirvana after death, if a dead corpse is burned out on Ganga river bank in Benares. Hindu people do it for their dead relatives, if they have enough money. Some old people go to Varanasi, to wait there for an expiration (Marku, tutaj nie rozumiem czy chodziło być może o zakończenie się palenia ciała czy o czekanie na odejście z tego świata?).
There are two main burning places. One is for Hindu Religion followers, the second one is for every other religion. Both use a traditional burning method - a bonfire on the Ganga bank. There is a modern electric crematorium there as well. It is the cheapest (600 - 800 INR) , but it attracts bad karma.
This is the other burial method. It is used for departed holy people, children (because they are holy), pregnant women (they have a holy person inside them), people who died from a cobra bite, lepers. Their bodies are thrown into the Ganga river.

Arriving in Varanasi it a bit overwhelming to say the least; traffic jams, pollution, crowds everywhere. Some places cars and rickshaws are not allowed because of the congestion so you have walk on foot. Trying to peddle through this was also a challenge.
Even after all the chaos, jams, etc. I still found a place of peace and comfort. It still had a calming effect. Maybe just this ancient Holy City is still reminiscing in tranquility thousands of years later, lingering on the essence of its' Holiness which continues to protrude 5000 years later.

Varanasi Travelogue | Travel Video | FH Travelogue #1
Also known at various times in history as Kashi (City of Life) and Benares/Banaras, this is one of the world's oldest continually inhabited cities and is regarded as one of Hinduism's seven holy cities. Pilgrims come to the ghats lining the River Ganges here to wash away a lifetime of sins in the sacred waters or to cremate their loved ones. It's a particularly auspicious place to die, since expiring here offers moksha (liberation from the cycle of birth and death), making Varanasi the beating heart of the Hindu universe. Most visitors agree it's a magical place, but it's not for the faint-hearted. Here the most intimate rituals of life and death take place in public, and the sights, sounds and smells in and around the ghats – not to mention the almost constant attention from touts – can be overwhelming. Persevere. Varanasi is unique, and a walk along the ghats or a boat ride on the river will live long in the memory.

Varanasi, India | Ganga Aarti and Sunrise Boat Tour of the Ghats
▶ Check out my gear on Kit:
Varanasi is the oldest city in India and its spiritual center. The best things to do in Varanasi are experiencing the Ganga Aarti on the Dashashwamedh Ghat and taking a sunrise boat tour of the ghats on the Ganges River.
The Ganga Aarti takes place every day at dusk. Several pandits (Hindu priests) circle large flaming lamps to rhythmic chants.
Varanasi a holy city vignette
Varanasi is one of the oldest cities in the world. It is a regarded as a holy city and you can truly feel the ancient sacredness mixed in with the chaos of the bustling city. And to be by the sacred river of the Ganges, you can see how people are intimately connected to it. It is a city where people from all over come to continue on to their next life. It is a city that impacted me deeply on my travels to India in 2010. This is a vignette into life in Varanasi through the eye of my camera!

Varanasi is a city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh dating to the 11th century B.C.E. Regarded as the spiritual capital of India, the city draws pilgrims who bathe in the River Ganges’ sacred waters and perform funeral rites. Ghats in Varanasi are riverfront steps leading to the banks of the River Ganges. The city has 87 ghats. Most of the ghats are bathing and puja ceremony ghats, while a few are used exclusively as cremation sites. Wikipedia
