The ancient road,which came to light during an excavation in 1993,has become a great and enduring symbol of the grandeur of the Tarsus of nearly 2000 years ago
Ancient Tarsus Road
Roman road in Tarsus, Turkey that dates back at least 2,100 years and has had travelers such as Julius Ceaser, St. Paul the Apostle, Cicero, Cleopatra, and Marc Antony. The road is in the center of the city so they, unfortunately, cannot keep digging out without demolishing standing buildings.
Ancient road uncovered in Turkey’s Tarsus
Works at an archaeological site in the southern province of Mersin’s historical Tarsus district have unearthed an ancient road.
In a written statement, Tarsus Museum Director Mehmet Çavuş said drainage work in the field had revealed an ancient road built using the polygonal technique.
Çavuş said a number of shops and terra-cotta jacking pipes were also discovered uncovered at the western section of the ancient road.
“The basalt ancient road is 215 meters away from the historical Cleopatra Gate, known as the naval gate. It was one of the main arterial roads providing access to Mersin. The road has the same features as the Ancient Street, which was discovered in the center of Tarsus during excavations carried out between 1993 and 2003,” he added.

A Quick Tarsus Travel Guide | Tarsus, Turkey 2019 ????????
This is a short video going over my day trip from Mersin, Turkey to Tarsus, Turkey in January of 2019. During this trip I visited many biblical sites in Tarsus like the Seven Sleepers Cave and the Church of Saint Paul. I tried some of the famous Tarsus Hummus, took in the amazing 15th century architecture at Siptilli Carsisi (Siptilli Bazaar) and enjoyed a walk down the street of Old Tarsus.

Myterious digsite located in Mersin/Turkey.
So in 2011 , a turkish police officer succesfully infiltrated in a group of treasure hunters but after some time , the police officer was found murdered. The police chief in that time quickly closed the case by saying He was killed by the treasure hunters. His wife was silenced by the Chief officer. So in 2016 after the coup, the chief was found guilty of treason and sentenced to jail. When the the chief officer was no more , The wife said My husband wasnt killed by the treasure hunters, he was killed by the government to silence him about what they found in the digsite. The dig site is still proctected and overseed by the government and even MİT( Turkish CIA) is guarding the area with Snipers and a lot of police and military personel. Apperantly, the dig still continues to this day , There are 20 workers and they are working 24/7. But entry is strictly restricted even people with political power cant get in or get any information.

UPDATE: Some people speculated, it was the Pope trying to find the lost bible of Saint Paul, But today Vatican said Vatican has nothing to do with the digsite. Source: Sputnik Turkey
UPDATE : The dig has officially stopped, the pits were filled , Government left without any explanation about what they found. Its still a mystery.

Tarsus Day Trip
took a day trip out to Tarsus in southern Turkey, the hometown of the apostle Paul.
We visited the Saint Paul's memorial church followed by Saint Paul's well and the old Tarsus houses.
Then we took a walk down an ancient Roman road and had lunch by the waterfalls of Tarsus.

Точно неизвестно, кто и когда основал Тарс, так как его прошлое уходит в глубокую древность. В светской истории Тарс впервые упоминается в связи с захватом ассирийцами (он никогда не был хорошо укрепленным городом). С тех пор он оставался зависимым городом и почти всегда платил дань: сначала Ассирии, Персии и Греции, затем царям из династии Селевкидов и в конце концов Риму.
Тарс находился в плодородной прибрежной области, где выращивали лен, что, в свою очередь, способствовало процветанию таких ремесел, как изготовление льняных тканей и палаток. В изготовлении палаток использовалось также полотно из козьей шерсти — цили́циум. Однако славу и богатство Тарс приобрел прежде всего благодаря превосходной гавани, которая находилась в стратегически важном месте на одном из главных наземных торговых путей, пролегавших с З. на В. Этот путь тянулся до Сирии и Вавилона на В., а также до сев. и зап. областей Малой Азии, проходя через Киликийские Ворота — узкое ущелье в горах Тавр, примерно в 50 км к С. от города.
В Тарсе побывали такие знаменитые люди, как Юлий Цезарь, Марк Антоний, Клеопатра и некоторые императоры. В 51—50 гг. до н. э. городом правил Цицерон. В I в. н. э. Тарс также славился как центр просвещения, и, по свидетельству греческого географа Страбона, он превзошел даже Афины и Александрию (XIV. 5. 13).
Ввиду вышесказанного неудивительно, что Павел назвал Тарс «небезызвестным городом», когда сообщил военачальнику, что он гражданин Тарса, а не египтянин (Де 21:37—39).В течение своего служения Павел не раз возвращался в Тарс, свой родной город (Де 9:29, 30; 11:25, 26), и он, несомненно, проходил через него во время своих миссионерских путешествий (Де 15:23, 41; 18:22, 23).
