2017 Joint Base Andrews Air Show - Golden Knights Opening, KC-135, & B-2 Flybys
The 2017 Joint Base Andrews Air Show.
A good early Saturday morning sunrise with a surprise and unexpected takeoff of the B-2 Spirit that a lot of us, including myself, were not aware about happening that day. What a Surprise!!
Also following that was the traditional Air Show opening provided by the United States Army Golden Knights Parachute Team with the American Flag & National Anthem. Afterwards was a flyby of the KC-135 Stratotanker courtesy of the 459th Air Refueling Wing based right there at Andrews. And finally the B-2 returns for a few flybys prior to heading back to its home base at Whiteman AFB in Missouri.

The Blue Angels take the stage over Joint Base Andrews for a fantastic high show practice. A couple things need to be noted with this video. Firstly, Fat Albert takes the stage to what should be the normal Fat Albert demo profile. However, it was cut short for unknown reasons at the time, and caused a major delay in the start of the Hornet portion of the Blue Angels show.
What was not known was the severity of the delay and the reason for it, but I learned later in the evening there was a safety issue which initiated a safety stand-down by the Boss to evaluate what happened. I later learned video on social media from on board Bert showed that there had been passengers on board (it is perfectly normal for the Blues to invite people to fly on Fat Albert during the routine on Friday) and injuries to the passengers may have resulted from this.
Secondly, note there are two #7s in the display. Both had riders on board. Both back seat riders were members of the Thunderbirds.
I've also removed audio in this video as one song played by the team causes the video to be blocked worldwide.

Taking the stage to showcase TEAM ANDREWS are aircraft that do not fly for the 89th Airlift Wing. Not shown in the video are the departures of the WILD flight, a flight of four F-16s from the DC ANG's 113th Fighter Wing as well as the MUSCLE flight of Hueys as they departed. However, the flight of four F-16s did make one pass in formation before they landed on Runway 19L. In addition, a KC-135R Stratotanker from the 459th Air Refueling Wing, callsign DEECEE3, made one pass before landing. A member of the Civil Air Patrol made a pass, as well as the four UH-1N Hueys from the 1st Helicopter Squadron.

Joint Base Andrews is a United States military facility located in Prince George's County, Maryland. The facility is under the jurisdiction of the United States Air Force 11th Wing, Air Force District of Washington (AFDW).[3] In 2009, Andrews Air Force Base and Naval Air Facility Washington were merged to form Joint Base Andrews.
The base is named for Lieutenant General Frank Maxwell Andrews (1884–1943), former Commanding General of United States Forces in the European Theater of Operations during World War II. The base is widely known for serving as the home base of two Boeing VC-25 aircraft which have the call sign Air Force One while the President of the United States is on board.[4]
For statistical purposes the base is delineated as a census-designated place by the U.S. Census Bureau. As of the 2010 census, the resident population was 2,973.[5]Overview[edit]
The host unit at Andrews is the 11th Wing (11 WG), assigned to the Air Force District of Washington. A non-flying wing, the 11 WG is responsible for maintaining emergency reaction rotary-wing airlift and other National Capital Region contingency response capabilities critical to national security, and for organizing, training, equipping and deploying combat-ready forces for Air and Space Expeditionary Forces (AEFs). The 11th WG commander is Colonel Bradley T. Hoagland.[6] The Command Chief Master Sergeant is Chief Master Sergeant Vance C. Kondon.[7]

The 11th Wing is responsible for maintaining emergency reaction rotary-wing airlift and other National Capital Region contingency response capabilities critical to national security, and for organizing, training, equipping and deploying combat-ready forces for Air and Space Expeditionary Forces (AEFs). The wing also provides installation security, services and airfield management to support the President, Vice President, other U.S. senior leaders and more than 50 tenant organizations and federal agencies.
89th Airlift Wing Air Mobility Command (Presidential Airlift Group)
The 89th Airlift Wing is responsible for worldwide special air mission airlift, logistics and communications support for the President, Vice President and other U.S. senior leaders. Air Force One is assigned to the 89th AW.
Air Force District of Washington
The Air Force District of Washington (AFDW) is composed of two wings, one group and two Ceremonial Elements. The 11th Wing and the 79th Medical Wing at Joint Base Andrews. Also under AFDW is the Air Force Operatiovides ceremonial and musical support throughout the National Capital Region and worldwide.
79th Medical Wing
The 79th Medical Wing is the Air Force's single medical voice for planning and implementing Air Force and joint medical solutions within the National Capital Region (NCR). Activated on 10 May 2006, it is the largest wing within the Air Force District of Washington and only the second medical wing in the Air Force.

The Thunderbirds take the stage to fly a low-high-low show over Joint Base Andrews. This is part of a rare joint appearance by both the Thunderbirds and Blue Angels at the same show. Friday's rehearsal show had the Blue Angels flying first and the Thunderbirds flying second. On Friday, the Thunderbirds scrubbed during their original time slot due to threatening thunderstorms, but flew about thirty minutes before the TFR expired. I was on base at the time but not in any position to film that performance.

The Blue Angels close out the Saturday show and the remainder of the flying display for the weekend with this spectacular low show performance over Joint Base Andrews. Fat Albert was also to fly, but because of an incident on Friday that resulted in some injuries, Fat Albert did not fly.
