Best Tips for Visiting Angkor Wat - Beat The Crowds in Siem Reap, Cambodia
DIVING in RAJA AMPAT, Indonesia:
We've had an incredible week in Siem Reap, visiting Angkor Wat and a lot of the other nearby temples. There are however a lot of things I wish I knew before visiting Angkor Wat, so I've put together this video to help your trip become as amazing as possible!
As I say in the video, the best time to visit the temples is early in the morning. It is colder, and less crowded. However, a lot of other people also get up early, so you better structure your route in a way opposite of the crowds.
Here are my suggested routs:
1. Start with the gates of Angkor Thom at 7am, then go to Bayon at 7:30, then to the nearby temples after that.
2. Start with Angkor Wat at sunrise, but go to the East end of the temple (everyone else are at the West side of Angkor Wat. After Angkor Wat, quickly go to Ta Phrom, and the nearby temples.
3. Start with Pra Roup at 6:45ish, then head to Ta Som at 7:30. After that, go south to Bantay Kedei and the nearby temples.
DON'T go to SUNRISE at ANGKOR WAT!
Location: Angkor Wat, Siem Reap, Cambodia.
This morning we woke up at 4 a.m. to see the sunrise at Angkor Wat. It was OK... To be completely honest, I think there are much better ways to spend your morning exploring the Angkor Temple complex.
Sunrise at Angkor Wat is OVERRUN by tourist. Yes, we did contribute to the problem, but that's beside the point. When we showed up to Angkor Wat at 5 a.m. there were already TONS of people there. We weren't even able to get a seat on the far side of the pond. By the time the sun was rising, there were over 2,000 people watching the sunrise with us. The crowds were almost more impressive than the sunrise.
Don't get me wrong, the sunrise over Angkor Wat is beautiful, but so is everything else at the Angkor Temple complex. I would suggest getting up super early one day an visiting other temples besides Angkor Wat at around 6 a.m.. You could have the amazing temples to yourself while everyone else is fighting at Angkor Wat to snap the best picture of the sunrise.

Angkor Thom & Angkor Wat Temple Tips (Plus 1 secret!)
Angkor Thom & Angkor Wat Temple Tips (Plus 1 secret!)
What is the best order to see Angkor Wat and avoid the crowds? What are the MUST do temples? How to I organise an INDEPENDENT trip to Angkor Wat and make the most of my time there? Top tips, secrets and a look at what people get wrong about Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom. This video is all about helping you make the most of YOUR trip around the angkor Wat Temples.
Siem Reap Guide:
Best Siem Read Accommodation
Emma lived in Cambodia for years and have been to Angkor Wat at least 12 times over the last 10 years, so I have a really good idea of what makes a great trip, how to best avoid the crowds and how to get the best photos.
Angkor Thom means “Big city” and refers to the larger complex of temples. Angkor Wat means “city temple” and is the main iconic temple in Angkor Thom. It is possible to see all of the main temples in a single day visit, but some people choose to stay longer.
Here are our top tips for enjoying Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom:
Buy your ticket the day before: Tickets are actually valid the evening before the day you plan to visit so that you can enjoy sunset the day before.
Pace yourself: The main temples to see are: Bayon, Angkor Thom and Ta Prohm (tomb raider temple). There are many less famous temples - so pick a few of these.
Wear bright colours: This will help you take epic photos for Insta :-) Remember the dress code - cover shoulders and knees. A thin scarf is very helpful.
Beat the crowds: If you want to avoid the hustle and bustle visit the less famous temples earlier in the day.
Top tip! Go to the south entrance of the main Angkor Wat temple for sunrise to avoid the crowds. Many people go to the pond near the west entrance- although this is very beautiful it can get SUPER crowded here.
Plan key times: Plan what you want to get from your trip. Here are some ideas: East Barai lake is a lovely quiet place for a beautiful sunset. Bakheng mountain temple for sunset is very busy - so arrive early if you want to do this.
Ticket prices:
$37 for a single day pass
$62 for a three-day pass
$72 for a weeklong pass
Getting around:
Tuk tuk: A fair price for a tuk tuk for one day is $15. You can find many tuk tuks around Siem Reap (especially near pub street) and agree on a price and timings with a driver. If you would like to go early for sunrise, it is worth finding a driver the day before and let them know where and when to meet. Remember it can take around an hour to get to Angkor Wat from Siem Reap - especially if you plan to buy your ticket in the morning. You can buy your ticket the day before and actually use the ticket to see sunset on the evening before your day trip. The ticket offices are on the way to the temples but quite a way out of town, so you will need to arrange transport to buy the ticket.
Bicycle: Bike rental is very cheap in Siem Reap. You can generally get a good bike for the day for a few dollars. Many hostels and guest houses offer bike rental. Because Siem Reap and the temple complex is pretty flat this is a nice way to see the temples.

24 Hours In Cambodia | Private Sunrise Tour $110- WORTH IT?
Since I went to Siem Reap alone, I got a private guide and driver. Let's get this out of the way first, How much did it cost? It cost me $110 USD , for a 10 hour experience. Now the cost would be reduced by almost half if you were with a friend, and a third if you with another, and so on, and so forth. I felt this was the best choice for me, to get the full experience, be able to video and speak freely, and move about in as little or as much time as I wanted. Plus, he took some really awesome photos for me! The entrance fee is $20 (£15) to $37 (£28) for a one-day pass, a three-day pass from $40 (£31) to $62 (£48) and a seven-day ticket from $60 (£46) to $72 (£55)
The visa system was extremely efficient. Don't forget to bring a photo, but if you do, they have people who can photograph you at an inexpensive cost, but it'll take time. For me, I had a photo with me and filled out the visa form in line- it took me about 10 minutes.
That evening, I went to the market to buy some clothes that will cover my knees and shoulders. The temples have a strictly enforced, no exposed body parts, rule.
The first temple I went to, is Angkor Wat and I went at 5am for sunrise. I enjoyed the whole experience, albeit tiring.
I just wanted to say, at about 4:50, the statue isn't a hindu statue but rather a buddhist statue with a buddhist robe, but an example of one is in 6:40 (Hindu God Vishnu with a Buddhist robe). To get the full effect of the echo room: listen with headphones- the reverb is seriously cool!
The second temple I went to is Phnom Bakheng Temple. It has 5 tiers and overlooks Angkor Wat. The third temple is called Bayon Temple- a temple known for the many heads that face in all directions. It's really magnificent there.
Ta Keo Temple is fourth- beautiful too- lots to steps though. But what really stood out to me about this temple is kindness. I joined some locals for beers ($1USD), and there was a chance you'd win another beer with the beer (it was one of those, lift the top of the can, kind of contest/games). I bought a round ($6USD) and won a free beer too. It's ridiculous, a drink in Canada is about $10...
The fifth and last temple is Ta Prohm Temple- tomb raider temple had a lot of really interesting tree growth. By this time, I was sooooo tired. So it was nice to end the tour with a Hollywood film location :)
That evening, I took the tuk tuk (the motorcycle buggies) to the circus (Phare). For $18 USD, I'd recommend it. It's interesting, teaches you a bit about culture, it gives you a chance to support local artists.

Photographing ANGKOR WAT | Travel Photography Vlog
In this video, I chow down on some happy pizza before photographing Angkor Wat for sunrise. I also visit Bayon, Ta Prohm, Banteay Srei and Prasat Pram.
I only spent a week in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Money/work concerns made me move on to Thailand sooner than I planned. So I'm planning on returning to Cambodia at some point to visit a few extra destinations.
I’m a full-time traveler, creating art that can motivate and inspire others to embark on their own adventures and to be more engaged with the wider world. I don't make any money from photography or videography, I'm currently supporting myself by teaching English online and doing a bit of freelance graphic design work.

Why Angkor Wat (Siem Reap) is a must see | CAMBODIA
Another one of our life bucket list stops the Angkor Wat temples in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Needless to say we had an absolutely incredible time visiting the Khmer Hindu and Buddhist temple ruins.
Things started off in Phnom Penh where we caught the Cambodia Post VIP Van for $11 USD each to get to Siem Reap. This is the site we booked our Cambodia Post VIP Van tickets from:
They have a variety of routes and departure times. We found Cambodia Post VIP Van to be a pretty cheap and convenient way getting from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap, then using a tuk tuk for the remainder of our journey to get to our accommodation.
The ride from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap via Cambodia Post VIP Van took about 3 hours in total including a quick lunch stop and there were tuk tuks waiting around for us to get to our final destination (our Airbnb accommodation in Siem Reap) that ended up being just a few minutes drive away.
Our accommodation in Siem Reap was an urban studio located in the peaceful Kandal Village. The place was clean, stylish and comfortable. It's situated above Khmer 652 - a Cambodian restaurant that serves very delicious Khmer cuisine with super lovely staff. There are a handful of other cafes and restaurants nearby as well as local craft shops too.
Khmer 652 is owned by the Airbnb hosts so you also get a 10% discount for dining there. Our favourite meals during our time in Siem Reap were at Khmer 652 as well as Crane just at the back of their alley. We loved the location of our accommodation in Siem Reap because it's also in close walking distance to a supermarket, the river bank and the very lively Pub Street.
After a quick haircut and a browse around Kandal Village we got some rest before heading over to the Angkor Wat temple complex the next day. We opted to get a personal tour guide which turned out to be one of the best decisions ever.
Sarak was our tuk tuk driver and Angkor Wat travel guide, recommended to us from a fellow YouTuber friend. Sarak took us all around the amazing temples in the Angkor Wat temple complex, visiting the lesser-known and secret quiet areas (as well as the main temples too). He even took it upon himself to help us take some beautiful photos with our phone during our entire time together too. He was a driver, travel guide and photographer all in one!
Get in touch with Sarak:
meamsarak@gmail.com
+855 92 394 994
If you're wondering how to get to Angkor Wat, we definitely recommend going via tuk tuk with Sarak to enjoy the open air ride and if you want to go to the quieter spots like we did, simply let him know.
We bought a 3-day multi-pass to visit the Angkor Wat temple complex. First day we had Sarak and on our subsequent visits we had Mr Bean (Sarak's business partner) take us when we filmed Peter's Part 2 for his how to retire early series and on the final visit we went via Grab tuk tuk ourselves just to Angkor Wat. We were in Siem Reap visiting Angkor Wat during November. Btw, make sure to keep your Angkor Wat tickets with you as this gets checked at various entry points into the temple complex.
We visited the following temples:
- West Gate
- Angkor Thom
- Preah Khan
- Ta Prohm (also known as the Tomb Raider temple)
- Bayon (and then finally...)
- Angkor Wat
We also enjoyed a breath taking sunset away from the crowds at Srah Sang.
If you're enjoying our videos please remember to hit that thumbs up and leave us a comment, we really enjoy hearing from our viewers :) Plus if you're new to our channel, we hope you'll subscribe and turn on notifications so you can stay up to date with all our latest videos each week. We post a new video every Sunday ;)
Thank you :D
