Kirriemuir, sometimes called Kirrie, is a burgh in Angus, Scotland. Its history reaches back to earliest recorded times, when it seems to have been a major ecclesiastical centre. Later it was identified with witchcraft, and some older houses still feature a ‘witches stane’ to ward off evil. In the 19th century, it was an important centre of the jute trade. The playwright J.M. Barrie was born and buried here, and a statue of Peter Pan stands in the town square.
The history of Kirriemuir extends to the early historical period and it appears to have been a centre of some ecclesiastical importance. The Kirriemuir Sculptured Stones, a series of late Pictish cross slabs, are now on display at the Meffan Institute in Forfar. Kirriemuir has a history of accused witches back in the 16th century. Many of the older buildings have a witches stane built in to ward off evil. This is a hard grey stone set into the local red sandstone which the buildings were built from. A pond on the outskirts of town, known as the Witch Pool, was where the supposed witches were meant to have been drowned.
Kirriemuir sits looking south towards Glamis and the Sidlaws over Strathmore (one of the most fertile fruit growing areas in Scotland). Its position at the base of the Angus glens makes it an attractive centre for hill-walking on nearby Munros, fishing, partridge, pheasant and grouse shooting and deer-stalking. There is also an 18-hole golf course with views north to Glen Clova and Glen Doll. The town comprises mainly two areas, Northmuir and Southmuir.
The town has 2 main parks - one of which lies in the Gairie Burn valley and the other at the top of Kirriemuir Hill. The Den can be split into 2 parts. The east Den lies to the east of Bellies Brae (The Commonty) and the west Den lies to the west of Bellies Brae. This park has a paddling pool, which tends to be cold but warms in the sunshine. The Den can be prone to flooding as it is located in a deep valley and this last happened in December 2012. In the far west Den, there is a large waterfall, often called the Den Waterfall, and the Cuttle Well.
The Hill or Peter Pan Park as it is called by locals, is located in Northmuir. A playpark was built in November 2010 which has a Peter Pan theme. The park is very popular with children. Smaller parks include Davidson Park in the Southmuir and Martin Park which is off Slade Road.

Backwater Reservoir is a reservoir in north west Angus, Scotland.
The reservoir's only purpose is to provide drinking water, and as such, it supplies Angus, Dundee, and parts of Perth and Kinross. Backwater, together with the smaller Lintrathen Reservoir 4 kilometres to the south, is capable of supplying some 300,000 people with drinking water.
The dam is an embankment type, measuring 42.6 metres high by 570 metres long. The reservoir extends for 3 kilometres behind the dam and has a peak capacity of 24.55 million cubic metres.
An unclassified road runs across the spillway and embankment before following the east bank of the reservoir. This road runs for a further 2 kilometres before coming to an end. The dam was the first in Britain to use chemical grouting to create a waterproof barrier below the embankment.
Backwater Reservoir can be reached by taking the B951 turn-off from the A93 (around 5 miles south of Spittal of Glenshee) to the north-west, or from the A926 at Kirriemuir to the south-east.

Winter Road Trip Drive To Glen Prosen Angus Scotland
Tour Scotland Winter travel video of a long road trip drive, with music, on single track Scottish roads on ancestry visit to the village of Glen Prosen in the Braes of Angus. Before the first World War, Prosen was a village with nearly 50 homes, a water powered corn and sawmill, a school, pub, post office and blacksmith. Today, few of the homes that existed on the eve of war are left. Following the the end of the war, 25 men chose not to come back to a life of drudgery to work for the estates, depriving the glen of bloodlines. For the men who did come back, life resumed much as before, with long hours and isolation. But people continued to leave from Prosen and hundreds of other glens, often to the west of Scotland, sometimes for a new life in Australia, Canada and others parts of the world. Glen Prosen is located between Glen Isla and Glen Clova. There is no road through to the north, only hill tracks. But vehicles can make a circular route from Kirriemuir by coming up the glen via Cortachy, crossing the Prosen river at Spott, and descending again via Pearsie.

Tour Scotland Winter travel video of the parish church and cemetery on ancestry visit to the village of Glen Prosen in the Braes of Angus. The present church built 1802, paid for by local inhabitants, ensuring continuous worship in the glen for nearly 400 years. It is a simple traditional white washed church. The Minister’s Road leads from here to Glen Clova, so named because the Minister used to walk it twice each Sunday.

A fun trip trip up to Loch Brandy in the Angus Glens.
A 45 minute to an hour walk up from the Glen Clova Hotel (not for the unfit) finds you at this little loch nestled in the corrie.
We had a full day fishing for brown trout and caught 18 between the pair of us, with the largest coming in at just over a pound, but the average being 1/4 to 1/2 a pound. Hard fighting little brownies fell to a variety of patterns, but the bulk of them fell to Bibio, Black Hopper and a Snipe and Purple.
Loch Brandy is free to fish and is certainly worth the walk.
