Paris, France - Video Tour of Montmartre (Part 1)
Hello and welcome for another video tour of a fantastic neighborhood in Paris by New York Habitat ( ). In this video, we visit the lovely district of Montmartre, a Paris neighborhood with winding streets that give the feeling that you have left Paris, which is one of the trendiest and most curious districts of the city.
This will be the first of a two-part series of video tours on this fantastic neighborhood.

Montmartre, or the Mountain of the Martyrs, most likely gets its name from the martyr Saint Denis. When wandering around up on the hill, be sure to keep an eye out for the headless statue of Saint Denis hidden in a little garden.
Sacre-Coeur, the white-domed church on the top of La Butte, is actually much younger than it looks, and was the subject of much controversy when it was built in 1914. The building of the church helped lead to tourism in the city and especially to the Montmartre area as the French flocked to see the church, even though most of the artists and bohemian characters were firmly against the building of such a massive religious structure in Montmartre.
The Moulin Rouge is perhaps the most famous, or rather infamous, cabaret in the world. The red windmill was inspired by the thirty or so windmills that dotted Montmartre at the time it opened in 1889. The once ultra-risqué birthplace of the cancan dance has now turned into a sort of tourist Mecca.

While the cabaret at the Moulin Rouge was more for wealthy Parisian men, the Moulin de la Galette held a Bal Populaire, which was an event that anyone could attend in the garden, for the locals to bring their sweethearts on the weekend. It was there that the impressionist artist Renoir painted his masterpiece, the Bal du Moulin de la Galette.
While most of the cabarets down closer to the boulevards were full of dancing girls and well off Parisians, the little Lapin Agile was the artists' hangout. The artistic cabaret changed names several times until one finally stuck --Le Lapin Agile, the Agile Rabbit, a play on words regarding the artist Andre Gill, who painted the playful rabbit trying to escape his fate in a sizzling frying pan.
The area continues to have a great nightlife buzz. Grab a seat at Le Saint (7 Rue Saint-Séverin) if you want to experience a real local's bar for a coffee or beer, or head to La Fourmi if you are after a drink or two amongst the cool Montmartois If you are in the sparkling mood, check out Call Me Bubbles (54 Rue Custine), a tiny but trendy new Champagne bar behind Sacre Coeur.
If it is clubbing you're after try the famous club Folies Pigalle (11 Place Pigalle) or the recently revived Bus Palladium (6 Rue Fontaine), with live music or DJs depending on the night.

Paris, France - Video Tour of the Bastille Neighborhood (Part 1)
Hello and welcome for another video tour of a fantastic Paris neighborhood by New York Habitat ( ).
In this video we are going to have a look at the area around La Bastille, which is located in the southeast of Paris, just beside the Marais. With its real Parisian feel, the Bastille has all kinds of unique hidden treasures.
This will be the first of a three-part series on this fantastic neighborhood.
The Place de la Bastille is the area where The Bastille, a formidable fortress on the eastern gate of Paris, was built in the 1300s.
After the revolution, the prison was dismantled and many of its study blocks went to the building of the Concorde Bridge. While the prison no longer exists, La Place de la Bastille is much a part of Parisian life. It's quite the busy traffic circle, so be careful crossing it!
The French Revolutionaries had one thing in mind: to do things differently. In that spirit, you should skip the hotel for your next trip to Paris. Booking a vacation rental in Paris will put you in touch with the real Paris, giving you an authentic experience you wouldn't get otherwise.

If you love contemporary art and antiques, make sure you check out the massive bi-annual Joel Garcia Antique and Contemporary Art Fair held at Place de la Bastille and on both sides of the place de l'Arsenal.
The area east of Place de la Bastille is known as the Faubourg Saint Antoine. All along rue de Faubourg Saint Antoine and rue de Charonne you can find alleyways lined with workshops and catch glimpses of 19th century Paris.
There are two particularly interesting areas off Faubourg Saint Antoine. The first one is Passage du Chantier where you'll find numerous hidden furniture shops.
The other is the quaint Cour de l'Etoile d'Or.

Hello and welcome to another New York Habitat video tour of a neighborhood in Paris ( ). Today, David Hill will take you on a tour of Montmartre for the second part of our series on this famous neighborhood.
While it used to be a small bohemian village on a hill outside of Paris, Montmartre has now become one of the most famous neighborhoods of the French capital city. Montmartre is one of the last towns that were amalgamated during the expansion of Paris in the 19th century. Its origins have made it one of the coolest and most curious neighborhoods of Paris.

If it is art you are after, you will probably love the Place de Tertre, where you will find the homes of several artists, such as the apartment where Vincent Van Gogh lived with his brother at 54 rue Lepic, or the apartment of Pablo Picasso at 49 rue Gabrielle. And if you would like to bring home a piece of art from your trip to Montmartre, make sure to stop by Carre d'Artistes, a sort of art market located at 16 rue Yvonne Le Tac.
The Bateau Lavoir, on Place Emile Goudeau, is another great spot for all the art lovers, which was converted into art studios in the 1880s. It is here that artists like Braque and Matisse started painting and that Picasso painted his first cubist painting, Les Demoiselles d'Avignon.
Of course, the best way to experience the atmosphere of Montmartre is to live here like a true Parisian. And there is no better way to live in Montmartre than renting one of the wonderful vacation rentals ( ) or furnished apartments ( ) provided in Paris by New York Habitat ( ).
Those who love to shop will appreciate strolling around in Montmartre along rue Durantin and rue Vieuville, where they will find plenty of trendy boutiques.

- Le templier, on rue de Abbesses as well, is a perfect spot for lunch. This cozy café offers friendly service and a great variety of dishes to suit all palates.
- Le Miroir, on rue des Martyrs, is highly recommended for real food lovers. It serves original dishes in a truly Parisian bistro ambiance.
- Au Grain de Folie, on rue Vieuville, is one of the city's oldest vegetarian restaurants in Paris.
- L'Ete en Pente Douce, on rue Muller, is a reasonably priced restaurant that has something to please every appetite.

If you don't know already, I am an expat in Paris and have been living in Paris as a foreigner since 2013, when I moved here to pursue my Masters degree. I've stuck around for long enough to see the good, the bad and the ugly!
Paris can be an incredible place - the architecture, the history, culture, food, sunny evenings down by the riverside...and I have soaked it all in over the past 5 years.
But I wanted to talk frankly and openly with you guys about this city's imperfections and tell you: IT IS OKAY NOT TO LIKE PARIS! I can definitely see how it's not for everyone. Hell, many French people HATE Paris (at least that's what they've told me)! Most expats here have a love-hate relationship with the city that makes you want to update your relationship status to it's complicated.

And in all honesty, there are many things that I dislike about Paris. I could probably do a whole other video on it! But I also believe that you can be happy anywhere as long as you choose to be (plus the pros far outweigh the cons).

The Classic Townhouses on Ile-Saint-Louis
Dating back to the seventeenth century, the island's buildings are for the most part townhouses built for members of the rich middle class, many of them officials who worked for Louis XIV. Since those times, the island has had many illustrious residents such as the poet Baudelaire, physicist Marie Curie and Voltaire. In the 1920s it was a favorite haunt of Hemingway.
Definition of Hôtel
Many historic buildings in France have the word Hôtel in their names. This does not mean they are actually hotels; in French hotel often refers to a prestigious single family residence or mansion.
The Hôtel Lauzun (17 quai d'Anjou)
The Hôtel Lauzun is just such a mansion. One of the most beautiful in all of Paris, the mansion is famous for two things: its exquisite baroque interior and its later residents. You can take a guided tour of the mansion every Tuesday. Baudelaire lived here while writing some of the poems of his famous Flowers of Evil (Les Fleurs du mal).
3 quai d'Anjou
The house at 3 quai d'anjou was designed by and the personal residence of Louis Le Vau.
The Hôtel Lambert (1 quai d'Anjou)
Another of Paris' finest mansions is the Hôtel Lambert. In the nineteenth century, the Polish government bought the mansion and welcomed Polish exiles such as the musician Chopin and the poet Adam Mickiewicz, together with their French friends. This mansion had a large garden, which was unusual for a mansion on the island, as there was so little space.
24-26 quai de Bethune - Pompidou Residence
The building at 24-26 quai de Bethune was built on the site of a beautiful mansion also designed by Louis Le Vau. All that is left of the old mansion are the door panels, but they are considered the loveliest doors on the island. This is where the late president of France, Georges Pompidou, lived.
The Polish Library and Adam Mickiewicz Museum (6 quai d'Orléans)
The Polish Library Building also houses three museums in one, the first devoted to the Polish poet Adam Mickiewicz, the second to Chopin, and the third to artist Boleslas Biegas. It can be visited on Thursdays.

L'Eglise Saint-Louis-en-l'Ile
The Saint-Louis-en-l'Ile church, designed once again by Le Vau was dedicated to King Louis IX, who after his death was made a saint. The front, hemmed in by buildings, hides a white interior, highly decorated with gilt, and filled with works of art and other treasures. It is a splendid setting for the many concerts given here throughout the year.
