ANSEL ADAMS FORD MOTOR CO. YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK TRAVELOGUE 47784
Produced by the Ford Motor Company, “Valley of Light” is a circa 1950 documentary on Yosemite National Park. It opens with a shot of famed photographer Ansel Adams as a title card reminds viewers in the opening seconds that his “photographs of our scenic parks are classic interpretations of a priceless American heritage.” We see Adams in his studio at mark 00:35 admiring some of his countless images. He strokes his beard as a voiceover remarks how he has pointed his camera at the wonders that surrounds him tens of thousands of times. But among the most beautiful spots has been “this Valley of Light — Yosemite.” The picture switches from black-and-white to color at mark 01:26 when the viewer is taken to the national park and scenes of a majestic waterfall. We see Yosemite Valley at mark 02:15 — a scene that greets visitors to the park — and we learn a bit of its history. (In 1851 as part of the Mariposa Wars intended to suppress Native American resistance, a United States Army battalion entered the west end of Yosemite Valley, marking the first documented reports of ethnic Europeans in Yosemite Valley.) Others who followed included South African naturalist John Muir and other conservationists who considered it a sacred place. It was dedicated a national park in 1890. The camera slowly pans across the landscape, showing us Bridalveil Falls at mark 03:35. Families are shown camping or staying in hotels, but all who visit wish to commune with nature. Small deer and families in car observe each other at mark 04:30 and wonder at the giant sequoias. We visit fields of flowers and boulders and rocks, and at mark 07:15 stand in a meadow and look up toward the mountains with its breathtaking colors of gray, bronze, and gold. Visitors take Mist Trail to Vernal Fall at mark 07:48 as Adams waxes poetic about the scenes, and we wonder at the snow-capped Sierra Nevada mountain range at mark 09:55. Riders on horseback visit hard-to-reach areas starting at mark 11:04 on the way to see more waterfalls “pounding down slick granite” and another view of the Sierra Nevada Mountains at mark 13:37. The film closes as a full moon “shines upon this Valley of Light — Yosemite.”

Yosemite Travel Guide | California Travel Tips
California travel tips host Veronica Hill shares her Yosemite Travel Guide in this episode of California Travel Tips. Plan on a full week to fully enjoy the many sights of Yosemite National Park, from the scenic vistas at Tunnel View to its world-famous waterfalls and giant sequoias.
To get your bearings, start in Yosemite Village, which is the hub of action in the valley. You can grab Yosemite permits at the Wilderness Center, pick up some a Yosemite map at the Visitor Center, or learn more about the valley's history in the Yosemite Museum. The Valley Shuttle map of Yosemite includes a guide to popular sights, bike trails and campgrounds in Yosemite.
The Ansel Adams Gallery has photography walks, classes and workshops. Many are free, and offered year-round. For the best Yosemite pictures, head out at sunrise or sunset, when a beautiful warm glow shines across the valley. No matter where you're standing, the Yosemite view is sure to be breathtaking.
Some of the best California hiking is found here in Yosemite. In fact, the park is home to 840 miles of hiking trails, including the famous John Muir Trail. When backpacking or hiking Yosemite trails through the backcountry, be sure to get a wilderness permit.
When hiking in Yosemite, you'll need a permit to hike the summit of Half Dome, which is 4,733 feet and about 16 miles round trip. More adventurous souls can brave the 6-day climb to El Capitan, the largest granite monolith in the world at 3,593 feet.
When you come to Yosemite, be sure to hike to the waterfalls. Yosemite Falls are the tallest waterfalls in North America. Lower Yosemite Falls are easily reached on a short paved trail near Yosemite Lodge at the Falls. The loop is roughly a mile, round trip.
Yosemite lodging ranges from the historic tents at Curry Village to countless Yosemite campgrounds throughout the valley. Camp 4 is a Yosemite campground popular with rock climbers, and Housekeeping Camp offers rustic sites along the river. Oprah Winfrey chose to stay at the Yosemite campsite, Lower Pines, where she prepared her famous drink for fellow travelers. Other Yosemite campsites in the valley include North Pines and Upper Pines. The campground reservation office is found just past Yosemite Curry Village.
Accommodations in Yosemite also include several nice Yosemite hotels — many with their own swimming pools, WiFi and other modern luxuries. Take your pick from such Yosemite lodges such as The Wawona, Tenaya Lodge or Yosemite Lodge at the Falls. Another Yosemite hotel is White Wolf Lodge, which is open June through September.
Most Yosemite hotels can be reserved by calling (801) 559-5000. Hotels in Yosemite book up fast, so call at least 5 months in advance.
For the best lodging in Yosemite don't miss the historic Ahwahnee Hotel. Built in 1927, this Yosemite National Park hotel is world-famous for its rustic architecture and grand public rooms. For a special treat, book one of their 24 Yosemite cabins, which sit along the beautiful Merced River. Every fall, the Yosemite Ahwahnee hosts its annual Vintners Holidays, drawing top winemakers from throughout the state.

Yosemite National Park is a United States National Park spanning eastern portions of Tuolumne, Mariposa and Madera counties in the central eastern portion of the U.S. state of California, commonly considered part of Northern California. The park, which is managed by the National Park Service, covers an area of 747,956 acres (1,168.681 sq mi; 302,687 ha; 3,026.87 km2) and reaches across the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountain chain. About 3.8 million people visit Yosemite each year: most spend the majority of their time in the seven square miles (18 km2) of Yosemite Valley.Designated a World Heritage Site in 1984, Yosemite is internationally recognized for its spectacular granite cliffs, waterfalls, clear streams, giant sequoia groves, and biological diversity.] Almost 95% of the park is designated wilderness. Yosemite was central to the development of the national park idea. First, Galen Clark and others lobbied to protect Yosemite Valley from development, ultimately leading to President Abraham Lincoln's signing the Yosemite Grant in 1864. Later, John Muir led a successful movement to establish a larger national park encompassing not just the valley, but surrounding mountains and forests as well—paving the way for the United States national park system.
Yosemite is one of the largest and least fragmented habitat blocks in the Sierra Nevada, and the park supports a diversity of plants and animals. The park has an elevation range from 2,127 to 13,114 feet (648 to 3,997 m) and contains five major vegetation zones: chaparral/oak woodland, lower montane forest, upper montane forest, subalpine zone, and alpine. Of California's 7,000 plant species, about 50% occur in the Sierra Nevada and more than 20% within Yosemite. There is suitable habitat for more than 160 rare plants in the park, with rare local geologic formations and unique soils characterizing the restricted ranges many of these plants occupy.
Yosemite National Park is located in the central Sierra Nevada of California. Three wilderness areas are adjacent to Yosemite: the Ansel Adams Wilderness to the southeast, the Hoover Wilderness to the northeast, and the Emigrant Wilderness to the north.
The 1,189 sq mi (3,080 km2) park is roughly the size of the U.S. state of Rhode Island and contains thousands of lakes and ponds, 1,600 miles (2,600 km) of streams, 800 miles (1,300 km) of hiking trails, and 350 miles (560 km) of roads. Two federally designated Wild and Scenic Rivers, the Merced and the Tuolumne, begin within Yosemite's borders and flow westward through the Sierra foothills, into the Central Valley of California. Annual park visitation exceeds 3.5 million, with most visitor use concentrated in the seven-square-mile (18 km2) area of Yosemite Valley.

Ansel Adams Wilderness (California) Backpacking - September 2015
My final 'big' backpacking trip of the 2015 season sent me to the Ansel Adams Wilderness in The Sierra Nevada near Mammoth Lakes, California. I had previously planned to hike the iconic Rae Lakes Loop but the massive Rough Fire had different plans for me. With the single road into the Rae Lakes trailhead closed by the Rough Fire I was left scrambling to change my plans only a week before my departure date.
Though it wasn't my first choice, the loop I ended up doing proved to be a worthy alternative - Agnew Meadows past Shadow Lake, up Shadow Creek to Ediza Lake, then on to Garnett Lake, to Thousand Island Lake via the John Muir Trail, and return to the Agnew Meadows Trailhead via the Pacific Crest Trail. Mileage was low but the views were off-the-charts incredible.
I've taken many 'solo' backpacking trips, but always with at least one dog as a companion. This was my first truly solo trip, and combined with the short mile days (which left a ton of down time in the afternoons), the four days alone in the Sierra certainly became a 'growth experience'.
This was also my first opportunity to backpack in the Sierra Nevada, and I was blown away. As my previous videos probably show I truly have a love affair with Colorado and Glacier, but The Sierra Nevada might actually be one notch above those magnificent settings. The 'pointy' peaks of white granite set against a backdrop of the ever-present ridiculously blue skies, the comfortable dry air and lower altitudes, the gently graded and perfectly maintained trails, and (always) the smell of pine, fir, and juniper created the perfect backpacking setting.
Hiking the entire John Muir Trail has long been an entry on my 'bucket list' and this trip drove that desire deeper into my soul. I'm not sure when I can make that dream happen, but having now had a small taste of the JMT I'm driven to someday soon have the full JMT 'meal'.
For those who have watched my other videos this one is done in the same style - a little over an hour in length total, intended to bring the audience along for the ride, and with a 10 minute still picture slide show with music at the end. If you just have a few minutes just skip to the end and enjoy the pictures.
