Alamogordo, New Mexico
Alamogordo is the county seat and economic center of Otero County in south-central New Mexico, United States. A city in the Tularosa Basin of the Chihuahuan desert, it is bordered on the east by the Sacramento Mountains and to the west by White Sands National Monument. It is the city nearest to Holloman Air Force Base. The population was 30,403 as of the 2010 census. Alamogordo is known for its connection with the Trinity test, the first explosion of an atomic bomb, and also for the Atari video game burial of 1983.
Humans have lived in the Alamogordo area for at least 11,000 years. The present settlement, established in 1898 to support the construction of the El Paso and Northeastern Railroad, is an early example of a planned community. The city was incorporated in 1912. Tourism became an important economic factor with the creation of White Sands National Monument in 1934. During the 1950-60s, Alamogordo was an unofficial center for research on pilot safety and the developing United States' space program.

Future Of Fort Bayard Still Unknown
When the State of New Mexico decided to put land at Fort Bayard up for sale, the future of this historical landmark was placed up in the air.
Members of the Fort Bayard Historic Preservation Society have worked since 1996 to educate visitors about the fort's history through tours and a museum that occupies one of the old homes at the fort.
According to member Ansel Walters, the Fort was established in the 1860's to protect the mining industry that was shipping minerals back east to fuel the industrial revolution. However, the history of this area goes back even further than that according to Walters.
You need to understand the Spanish were here mining in this area in the early 1600's and it's got a long history before Fort Bayard was even established in 1866, says Walters.
For member Gloria Beltran, this is ancestral land, and she hopes can be preserved for the public.
My great-grandfather was French-Canadian and he was based here in Fort Bayard during the Indian Wars, and my other two great grandparents were Chiricahua Apache, says Beltran.
Cecilia Bell, with the society says that on Saturdays the museum welcomes tourists and many attend the annual Fort Bayard Days at the old fort to celebrate the history.
We usually average about 12 to 15 each Saturday in the wintertime. In the summer it's 20 or more. However, if we were out here everyday it would be much more, says Bell.
A National cemetery and a new hospital are located nearby. There's a monument in the middle of the old fort that pays homage to the Buffalo Soldiers who were stationed there.
After being decommissioned the fort housed many tuberculosis patients. John Bell, preservation member and retired physician, says people would come from all over to be treated in the mild climate and elevation that exists there.
They (patients) were here normally six months, sometimes up to eighteen months. The mortality was about 20 percent in the early years. By the close of the tuberculosis era it was about five percent. That's because they got the patients earlier, they were able to keep them longer, says Bell.
The State of New Mexico says it can no longer afford the upkeep of the property and has placed the old fort up for sale. The state says local governments have expressed interest in the property, but the high cost to bring it up to meet codes may hinder such efforts.
According to the New Mexico's General Services Department, a study was completed in 2011 to determine what it would take to bring the fort up to code and regulation.
The study determined it would cost $28 million in 2012. However, today the state says that it would cost around $30 million due to increased costs and more deterioration, with a bulk of the cost tied to asbestos remediation.
New Mexico General Services Department Secretary Ed Burckle, said in a recent telephone interview with KRWG News that the state would like to turn it over to a local government or organization that would be able to operate and maintain the property and history of the Fort.
The state would really like to see the more than 50 national historic landmark buildings preserved as great as possible, says Secretary Burckle.
Secretary Burckle said that in order to make the property more attractive it has made plans to tear down the old hospital.
The Fort still draws tourists and dollars to the area according to Scott Terry President and CEO of the Silver City and Grant County Chamber of Commerce.
It's truly a place for tourists to come. So without it, we would see a drop in hotels, people eating in the restaurants, and buying gas, says Terry.
Terry says that without the old Fort there would be a negative economic impact in the area.
The Fort Bayard Historic Preservation Society hopes that whoever eventually purchases the land will renovate the property and bring it back to life, so veterans and the next generation can enjoy the historical past of the Fort.

SUMMARY
=======
New Mexico (Spanish: Nuevo México pronounced [ˈnweβo ˈmexiko], Navajo: Yootó Hahoodzo pronounced [jòːtxó xɑ̀xʷòːtsò]) is a state in the Southwestern region of the United States of America. It is one of the Mountain States and shares the Four Corners region with Utah, Colorado, and Arizona; its other neighboring states are Oklahoma to the northeast, Texas to the east-southeast, and the Mexican states of Chihuahua to the south and Sonora to the southwest. With a population around two million, New Mexico is the 36th-most populous state. With a total area of 121,590 sq mi (314,900 km2), it is the fifth-largest and sixth-least densely populated of the 50 states. Its capital and cultural center is Santa Fe, while its largest city is Albuquerque. Due to their geographic locations, northern and eastern New Mexico exhibit a colder, alpine climate, while western and southern New Mexico exhibit a warmer, arid climate.
The economy of New Mexico is dependent on oil drilling, mineral extraction, dryland farming, cattle ranching, lumber milling, and retail trade. As of 2016-2017, its total gross domestic product (GDP) was $95 billion with a GDP per capita of $45,465. New Mexico's status as a tax haven yields low to moderate personal income taxes on residents and military personnel, and gives tax credits and exemptions to favorable industries. Because of this, its film industry has grown and contributed $1.23 billion to its overall economy. Due to its large area and economic climate, New Mexico has a large U.S. military presence marked notably with the White Sands Missile Range. Various U.S. national security agencies base their research and testing arms in New Mexico such as the Sandia and Los Alamos National Laboratories. During the 1940s, Project Y of the Manhattan Project developed and built the country's first atomic bomb and nuclear test, Trinity.
Inhabited by Native Americans for thousands of years before European exploration, it was colonized by the Spanish in 1598 as part of the Imperial Spanish viceroyalty of New Spain. In 1563, it was named Nuevo México after the Aztec Valley of Mexico by Spanish settlers, more than 250 years before the establishment and naming of the present-day country of Mexico; thus, the present-day state of New Mexico was not named after the country today known as Mexico. After Mexican independence in 1824, New Mexico became a Mexican territory with considerable autonomy. This autonomy was threatened, however, by the centralizing tendencies of the Mexican government from the 1830s onward, with rising tensions eventually leading to the Revolt of 1837. At the same time, the region became more economically dependent on the United States. At the conclusion of the Mexican–American War in 1848, the United States annexed New Mexico as the U.S. New Mexico Territory. It was admitted to ...
Fort Apache: Conflict, Conservation, and (Re)Conciliation(?) in Indian Country
Over the last few hundred years, the Fort Apache and Theodore Roosevelt School National Historic Landmark have been different places for different people—homeland, military post, boarding school, tribal cultural center. The core question is whether and how the colonial outpost most responsible for Apache subjugation can be returned to active duty in support of White Mountain Apache Tribe sovereignty, community, and prosperity. Join archaeologist-preservationist John R. Welch in writing the next chapter on the history of this internationally recognized historic site in the heart of Apacheland.
John R. Welch is a professor, jointly appointed in the Department of Archaeology and the School of Resource and Environmental Management at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia. Welch works with indigenous communities on projects at the interface of indigenous peoples’ sovereignty—rights and responsibilities derived from authority over people and territory—and stewardship—sustainable and broadly beneficial uses of cultural and biophysical inheritances. Welch is a founding member of the board of the Fort Apache Heritage Foundation. He publishes on Apache history and applied archaeology and directs SFU Archaeology’s online Professional Graduate Program in Heritage Resource Management.

A Princess of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs
John Carter, an American Civil War veteran, goes prospecting in Arizona and, when set upon by Indians, is mysteriously transported to Mars, called Barsoom by its inhabitants. Carter finds that he has great strength on this planet, due to its lesser gravity. Carter soon falls in among the Tharks, a nomadic tribe of the planet's warlike, four-armed, green inhabitants. Thanks to his strength and combat abilities he rises in position in the tribe and earns the respect eventually the friendship of Tars Tarkas one of the Thark chiefs.
The Tharks subsequently capture Dejah Thoris, Princess of Helium, a member of the humanoid red Martian race. The red Martians inhabit a loose network of city states and control the desert planet's canals, along which its agriculture is concentrated. Carter rescues her from the green men to return her to her people. (Summary from Wikipedia)
