Apnea Total promo video 2019
In January I was asked to make a short promo for Apnea Total, the first freediving school on Koh Tao. We had some fun diving days with beautiful people, skilled freedivers, and a kick-ass boat!
Freediving training - morning stretching (Koh Tao, Thailand)
Next video about stretching for Freediving! This time - empty lungs stretching or diaphragm stretching. Do it before you have breakfast ;-)
How to do 3 section breathing
Special breathing for Freediving
How to do full lungs stretching
I do recommend to start practicing this Freediving technique at home and then do it in a pool. But you will start in a pool by doing some swimming training, not apnea training!
We are the first PADI Freediving school on Ko Tao, Gulf of Thailand, which offers freediving courses for all levels, from complete beginners up to Freediving Instructor level. We also offer freediving training on a daily basis, both in the pool and open water. We can help you to improve your Freediving techniques, as well as improve your PB's!

Koh Tao Thailand, 12 Stitches in 5 days
Unfortunately my diving in Koh Tao Thailand trip didn't go quite as planned. After riding a scooter, I crashed and ended up with 12 stitches in my leg. Instead, I enjoyed Sairee beach and coffee all week, along with some amazing sunsets!

Lessons I Learned From Failing My SSI Level 1 Freediving Course // New Freedivers Should See This
This is the first video documenting my formal freediving training on the journey of becoming an SSI freediving instructor. It shows a bit about the concepts you learn in level 1, as well as how quickly (or slowly) or slowly you can progress. I'm documenting my challenges and successes in order to show freedivers of all levels what the learning process looks like and answer any questions that new freedivers might have about getting into the sport.
As you can see from the title, I failed my freediving course on the first try. Apparently, this is a fairly common thing to do, with somewhere around half of students not passing within the 2.5 days that are allocated to the course. However, this isn't a reason to give up as the sport is about a gradual progression of learning the skills to become a better freediver! It's not just about certifications. It's about learning the skills to make you a safe and competent freediver, and it's about knowing when to take a break from pushing yourself to get a certification so you can continue to freedive another day.
-------------------------------
Video Script:
So it’s day one of my Level 1 SSI Course. My instructor, Edwin, is giving us a tour of all of the diving facilities at Freedive+. I have one other student from South Korea here on holiday who is also hoping to get her Level 1 training! You’ll get to meet her a little bit later.
After our tour, it was time for our freediving theory! This included how to choose and use equipment and a short anatomy and physiology lesson and how this relates to freedivers. We also learned about how relaxing and preparing for a breath hold is super important. Contrary to popular belief, hyperventilation is a bad idea! We timed our breath holds, and I held my breath for 3 minutes and 13 seconds. That’s over 1 whole minute longer than I’ve ever done before!
Now it was out of the classroom and into the pool.
Once we got into the pool, Edwin taught us how to use weights to achieve neutral buoyancy and how to do turns with freediving fins on. As blackouts become more common when you start seriously freediving, Edwin also pretended to black out so we could learn proper rescue techniques. We finished off our day with an introduction to static apnea, where a diver holds his or her breath for as long as possible while holding completely still. When you’re in the water, something called the mammalian dive reflex kicks in and you can hold your breath even longer than on dry ground! I’ll go into mammalian dive reflex in a later video.
On the morning of day 2, Edwin introduced us to some full body stretches to increase our flexibility, and then we headed to the water to dive on the line for the first time. As always, Edwin demonstrated the skills first and then dove down to make sure that we learned the skills safely. Soy was able to dive comfortably to 10 meters, but unfortunately, here’s where it gets bad for me.
Just a reminder for those non-divers, equalizing is what you when you are descending in an airplane to relieve the pressure on your ears. You do this and more when freediving, but there is too much information to go into the topic here!
We took a 2 hour lunch break and then returned to take the knowledge test, and then it was back into the ocean to figure out this equalizing business. We tried everything from changing head positions, experimenting with different techniques, and even different body positions. Once again, nothing worked and I was stuck at 4 - 6 meters.
It’s kind of disheartening to have your anatomy be something that is the limiting factor rather than your physical or mental capability. That’s a huge challenge and hopefully we’ll be to overcome that!
When I got home, I learned about one of the most amazing pieces of freediver training equipment! Yes, free divers use balloons can help train strength and awareness for the little muscles in the throat, mouth, and sinuses that are involved in equalization. This was just the introduction into the weird world of free divers and attractive things they do in the pursuit of diving deep.
Text: 6:30 am
Okay so here we are at 8 am on day 3 of my level 1 SSI freediving training. Um, we have one more open water session and more theory to do, but I’m feeling pretty nervous since I wasn’t able to equalize more than 4 meters yesterday. So hopefully I pass.
Edwin, Soy, and I headed back into the ocean, and today was the day that I had a breakthrough! After two hours, I was finally able to make it down to 10 meters without feeling pain in my ears or sinuses. In addition, we had some company during this open water session!
We still had a few more skills to complete, but Soy’s vacation was over. She left with a Level 1 pool certification, and while I didn’t complete my level 1 today, I’m here for several months and still have the time.
