Although the architecture of Auguste Perret is internationally recognized today, the history and layout of the apartments proposed in the draft reconstruction of Havre were long ignored.
Opened in March 2006 , as part of the inscription by UNESCO 's Downtown rebuilding of Le Havre on the List of World Heritage of Humanity, the witness Apartment Perret is a museum of the City of Havre dedicated in architecture interior, as well as furnishings and daily life since the release until the mid 1950s .
The immediate post-war period is a search for ideal housing for the many victims of the bombed cities; during the International Exhibition of Town Planning and Housing (July 1947) are presented very diversified projects like the Radiant City of Marseille ( Le Corbusier ) or the buildings of Sotteville - lès - Rouen by Marcel Lods . As for the buildings without individual assignments imagined by Auguste Perret 's Atelier , located in the town hall square in Le Havre , they are already an example to follow in many architectural journals.
Drawn and published in 1946, this project obeys several constraints in order to grant:
an economical solution ( concrete material , prefabrication , standardization )
a sustainable construction method (classic ( banal ) architecture , robust frame)
modern comfort (sunshine, interior equipment).
Beyond the arrangement in open islands, the study of the interiors, also makes it possible to understand that this architecture is not reduced to its classicism but widens to a search for optimal solutions, defined by the result of the experiments the past. On the other hand, the ideal of sustainability is made even more obvious by observing the flexibility of the interiors as the uses are considered as provisional elements of the architecture: The interior of the apartment? Naked. No fixed decor. Just proportions. It is up to the inhabitant to decorate his dwelling; and I imagine that this scenery will vary. To contemplate without respite the same forms is to hear the same poet daily. There is something to make it odious.
The modern architect will be better able to respect the personality of the inhabitant . Expressing this way in 1925, it is easy to understand that the exterior aesthetics wants to evoke the general character of an urban dwelling (the Haussmann island), without, however, determining its internal use irreversibly. The interior design of the Perret apartments was revolutionary.

Le Havre is a port city on the banks of the English Channel in the northern French region of Upper Normandy.
During the Second World War, Le Havre was almost completely destroyed,
and in its place in 1946-1964 a modern city was built, designed by the architect Auguste Perret.
Recorded in May 2017.

If you want to get the most out of Le Havre you have to come ready to experience somewhere that differs from a normal, picturesque French city.
Le Havre looked to the future and hired the modernist Auguste Perret, a mentor of Le Corbusier, to rebuild the centre following the destruction of the Second World War.
His efforts have now been rewarded with UNESCO status, and you don’t have to be into modern architecture to love the clean lines and boldness of the city’s public spaces and monuments.
The port is the busiest in France and will excite those interested by trade and commerce from the 16th to the 21st century.
Lets explore the 15 best things to do in Le Havre:
1. St. Joseph’s Church
Auguste Perret’s incredible church is modern architecture at its most powerful.
With a neo-gothic temple he showed what reinforced concrete could achieve by devising a self-supporting tower 107 metres tall.
So when you stand in the choir there’s nothing above you but a hollow tube with bare concrete illuminated by sunlight filtered through stained glass.
Such is the church’s presence that you can see it from almost anywhere in Le Havre and it stands as a beacon for sea traffic at night.
There’s much more going on here than meets your first glance, as the church is informed by abstraction and the reforms of the Second Vatican Council.
Everything you see has meaning but you may need some hints to decode it.
2. Musée d’Art Moderne André Malraux
There’s five centuries of art at MuMa, a modern glass and steel building right next to the marina.
Since the late-19th century Le Havre has either been the birthplace or home of a raft of superior artists like Braque, Dubuffet, Friesz, Dufy and Monet.
So it follows that the city’s art museum should be beaten only by the Musée d’Orsay for its impressionist works.
Manet, Renoir, Degas, Sisley, Gauguin and Monet are all household names.
Then you have the men who inspired the movement like Delacroix, Gustave Courbet and Eugène Boudin.

3. Place de l’Hôtel-de-Ville
Inaugurated in 1958, Le Havre’s city hall and square are another cornerstone of Perret’s vision for the city.
The clean and bright mixed-use buildings around the square have held up well, and their high-ceilings and tall windows recall neoclassical townhouses.
They adhere to Perret’s rule that residents should be able to claim their “right to peace, fresh air, sunlight and space”. The square is a welcoming public place, with flowerbeds, lawns and fountains, all at the foot of the 72-metre tower of the city hall.

An edifying snapshot of life in Le Havre at the beginning of the 19th century is on quai de l’île in the Quartier Saint-François.
The townhouse, planned by Paul-Michel Thibault, who also plotted the city’s fortifications, was untouched by the devastation in 1944 and has been preserved as an historic monument since 1950. Maison de l’Armateur (House of the Ship-owner) has five storeys around an atrium lit from the roof by an octagonal skylight.
All of the furniture and art dates to the 1700s and 1800s, and the rooms give you insights about the people who lived here, like the cabinets of curiosities, the plush library and study of a rich merchant.

These days everyone knows about the landmark buildings that Auguste Perret gave to Le Havre, but not so much is known about the apartment interiors the architect proposed for the citizens of the city who lost their homes in the war.

The UNESCO World Heritage site of Le Havre is a port city in northern France that was heavily damaged by bombing raids during World War 2. After the war, and needing their key port city up and running again, the French government turned to a leading architect of the era - Auguste Perret. He rebuilt the ruined city in his own image, mainly with reinforced concrete - but also with a few surprisingly modern touches!

Flash Back Appartement Perret au Havre
Acquis, restauré puis meublé par la Ville du Havre dans le plus grand respect de son époque, l'appartement Perret va offrir aux visiteurs, un petit voyage en arrière, dans les années 50 si chères à Auguste Perret. Situé au premier étage d'un Immeuble sans affectation individuelle (les fameux ISAI) de l'avenue Foch, l'appartement a été entièrement remis dans son état d'origine : des cloisons aux volets en passant par la robinetterie, les clenches de porte et les interrupteurs électriques, tout a été installé à l'identique. Les meubles ont également fait l'objet d'une chasse aux trésors auprès des particuliers. Ils sont tous signés René Gabriel, Marcel Gascouin et André Baudoin, principaux maîtres-ensembliers et décorateurs qui ont travaillé aux côtés de Perret, lors de la reconstruction du Havre. Vaste et clair, l'appartement comprend un salon, un bureau, une cuisine, une chambre pour les parents, une autre pour les enfants et une salle de bain. En déambulant de pièce en pièce selon un parcours guidé bien précis, le visiteur s'attardera certainement sur tous les objets qui peuplent et redonnent vie à ce splendide appartement. Robots ménagers, ustensiles de cuisine, vêtements, jouets, postes de radio et revues d'époque permettent mieux que quiconque de ressusciter l'ambiance familiale des années 50. Ceux qui ont vécu cette époque s'en souviendront avec nostalgie, les autres découvriront le charme un peu désuet de cette décennie pleine de promesses.
