Aravalli Biodiversity Park Gurgaon
Latika Thukral in conversation with Rahul Dewan.
The Aravali Biodiversity Park, as its name suggests is an endeavour to create a forest garden that celebrates forest flora native to the Aravali range. We have lost a large part of Aravali range, its flora and fauna to rampant development and urbanization. The Aravali Biodiversity Park was once a mining site. The land still has fresh scars of the mining era. ‘iamgurgaon’ intends to restore this scarred land into a biodiversity reserve and celebrate the rich flora of the Aravali Range

Original biodiversity restored, butterflies throng Aravali park in New Delhi in 360 degree
Seven years ago, when work started at the Aravali Biodiversity Park spread over 692 acres bordering Vasant Vihar and Vasant Kunj, scientists stared at a landscape degraded by mining activities and encroachment by jhuggi-jhopri clusters. In the remaining area, prosposis julifera or vilayati kikar , introduced by the British to “green” the denuded ridge area in the Capital had proliferated choking out the native vegetation of the Aravallis.
Dr. M. Shah Hussain, scientist-in-charge at the Aravalli Biodiversity Park, said the Centre’s scientists slowly cleared out patches of prosposis julifera and replanted endemic Aravalli flora. Dr. Hussain said that 30 per cent of the park continued to remain under prosposis julifera cover which would be slowly replanted.
A major achievement of the park is the butterfly conservatory which has led to over 90 species of butterflies making their home at the park presently. “Earlier there were only 10 butterfly species here. Each butterfly and its caterpillar feeds on specific plant/tree leaves. So we planted these first and then introduced new species here,” said Dr. Ayesha Sultana, who is in charge of the conservatory. Today, the entire park abounds with butterflies.
