The Nebraska National Forest is a United States National Forest located within the U.S. state of Nebraska. The total area of the national forest is 141,864 acres, or 222 sq miles (574 km2). The forest is managed by the U.S. Forest Service's Nebraska Forests and Grasslands Supervisor's Office in Chadron, Nebraska. The national forest includes two ranger districts, the Bessey Ranger District and the Pine Ridge Ranger District. In descending order of land, the forest lies in parts of Thomas, Dawes, Blaine, and Sioux counties.

First of all, I'm honoured -- we're honoured to be here with the Secretary of Agriculture, as well as Marshal Case, who is head of the American Chestnut Foundation. We are planting an American chestnut tree here at the White House. This is the 133rd year of Arbor Day. Our message is to our fellow citizens, plant trees -- it's good for the economy and it's good for the environment.

STORYLINE
US President George W. Bush marked the 133rd anniversary of Arbor Day Friday with the ceremonial planting of a tree on the White House North Lawn.
Bush and Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns placed three shovels of mulch around the tree's base as Marshal Case of the American Chestnut Foundation watched.
Despite the brevity of the event, the presidential tree-planting was aimed at aiding a long effort to bring back the American chestnut.
Once a dominant presence in the eastern United States, the graceful trees were virtually wiped out by blight starting at the turn of the 20th century.
Now, after years of breeding, cloning and crossbreeding with other species, the Agriculture Department is ready to reintroduce disease-resistant chestnuts to eastern forests next year.
The first family's dog Miss Beazley also took part in the tree planting.
Arbor Day is celebrated the last Friday in April and is dedicated to planting trees.

Devastating House Explosion in Lincoln NE 8-14-17 (Part 5 Video)
This horrible explosion occurred at approximately 1630 on Monday afternoon on the corner of 78th and Eastview Drive (2 blocks South of Old Cheney). An older couple lived there alone.
They both were blown into the neighbors back yard approximately 70 to 80 feet to the west. The couples neighbors from 2 houses down are friends of ours and after hearing the explosion, they ran over and and saw the couple laying in the adjacent neighbors back yard. Initially, both of them were engulfed in flames on nearly 75% of their body. They quickly ran to the nearest garden hose and started dousing them with water and doing everything they could to remove their burning clothing. The woman sustained major inhalation burns and her throat was rapidly swelling shut. Upon arrival, paramedics were unable to intubate due to posterior oropharyngeal wall edema so a tracheotomy was performed. I'm fairly certain that these efforts were too late and the woman did not make it.
The man regained consciousness and stated that he was cooking dinner at their stove and the next thing he remembers is laying in the grass and his neighbor and friend spraying him with a garden hose. The man was taken away by Lincoln Fire and Rescue and appeared to be in critical if not grave condition.
It was reported that debris was found up to 4 blocks away. Near by neighbors said that they were nearly blown off their sofa as they watched TV. The concussion could be felt inside of houses 6-8 blocks away. It could be seen that 3-4 houses away in most all directions had their windows blown out and the closer houses had kitchen cabinets jarred loose from the walls.
This is speculation as well and has not yet been confirmed, but it is fairly evident from the damage that this explosion was from a Natural Gas leak.
We live a few blocks to the East and North of this unfortunate couple. Please be in prayer for their family, friends and neighbors..

Retired Superior Court Judge Niesje Steinkruger highlights ongoing work to document the histories of Alaskans sent to Morningside Hospital through court records and other archived materials.
Steinkruger has spent five years as a volunteer for the Morningside Project. Thousands of Alaskans were sent to Morningside between 1904 and the early 1960s because there were no facilities here to treat the mentally handicapped and those suffering other disabilities. After the hospital closed, many of these people were never heard from again. The hospital building burned and all records were lost.
