Chania is a city on the northwest coast of the Greek island of Crete. It’s known for its 14th-century Venetian harbor, narrow streets and waterfront restaurants. At the harbor entrance is a 16th-century lighthouse with Venetian, Egyptian and Ottoman influences. Opposite, the Nautical Museum has model ships, naval objects and photographs. The former monastery of St. Francis houses the Archaeological Museum of Chania.
Crete, Greece's largest island, is known for its varied terrain, which ranges from fine-sand beaches at Elafonisi to the White Mountains. Mt. Ida, the tallest of the range, is home to the Ideon Cave, which was the birthplace of Zeus, according to Greek mythology. The capital, Heraklion, is home to the renowned Heraklion Archaeological Museum, housing Minoan artifacts, and Knossos, a Bronze Age settlement.
Greece is a country in southeastern Europe with thousands of islands throughout the Aegean and Ionian seas. Influential in ancient times, it's often called the cradle of Western civilization. Athens, its capital, retains landmarks including the 5th-century B.C. Acropolis citadel with the Parthenon temple. Greece is also known for its beaches, from the black sands of Santorini to the party resorts of Mykonos.

One of the many beautiful medieval monuments of the city of Chania, the imposing church of the monastery of the monks of Frangiskan (16th century), houses the Archaeological Museum of Chania which has a collection of finds from a variety of sites in the prefecture. Discoveries from the Minoan civilization of Chania, amongst which the clay tablets of early script, that of Linear A and Linear B, fragments of vases, as well as the clay seal, known as the master's impression, really stand out. Prominent is also the presence of the painted late Minoan clay shrines and dozens of vases, along with the compass from the late Minoan tomb of Aptera, with the beautiful portrayal of the guitar player which is also awe inspiring. The exhibits of historical times (1milleniumBC) where the group of votive bulls from Tsiskiana, the Hellenistic and Roman statues from important archaeological sites of the prefecture and the three mosaic floors dating back to the Roman years from the city of Chania with portrayals from mythology, captivate the visitor. Finally, equally remarkable is the collection of the Hellenistic and Roman gold jewellery taken from tombs discovered in the city of Chania or sanctuaries of the surrounding area.

Crete | Chania Historical Archives Museum. Crete is not only known for its ancient and mediaeval history. There's a good deal of more modern history on view, as well, and the Historical Archives Museum in Chania is one place where some of it can be viewed.
Crete was joined to Greece only about a hundred years ago, in 1913. But since the early 19th century there had been constant agitation for independence from Ottoman Turkish rule.
There's a lot of documentation from that period, especially in the first decade of the 20th century when this agitation came to a head.
The museum is housed in an unobtrusive but elegant neoclassical mansion. Admittedly, it's scholars and historians who will be most interested in the contents. But the ordinary tourist, too, can get a lot out of it by simply imagining you're back in a gentler age -- before tourism.
The Museum is open weekdays from 9 am to 1 pm and is closed on weekends.
