Arikamedu is an archaeological site in Southern India, in Kakkayanthope, Ariyankuppam Commune, Puducherry. It is 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) from the capital, Pondicherry of the Indian territory of Puducherry.
located:- It is located on the bank of the Ariyankuppam River (for most part of the year the river is considered a lagoon), also known as Virampattinam River, which forms the northern outlet of the Gingee River as it joins the Bay of Bengal. As the site is located at the bend of the river it provides protection to sea-going vessels that dock there. The site has been subject to extensive archaeological excavations.[1][2][3][4][5][6] The archaeological site is spread over an area of 34.57 acres (13.99 ha) and has been under the control of the Archaeological Survey of India since 1982.[1]
The first mention about Arikamedu was in 1734, in a communication from the Consul of the Indo-French colony of Pondicherry. It informed the French East India Company that villagers were extracting old bricks from the Virampattinam. The earliest mention of the Arikamedu archaeological site was by Le Gentil of France, who the King of France had assigned to observe notable astronomical occurrences in the world. Gentil, after visiting Arikamedu, confirmed the earlier report of the Consul of the Indo-French colony.

Arikamedu is an archaeological site in Southern India, in Kakkayanthope, Ariyankuppam Commune, Puducherry. It is 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) from the capital, Pondicherry of the Indian territory of Puducherry.
Sir Mortimer Wheeler 1945, and Jean-Marie Casal conducted archaeological excavations there in 1947–1950. The site was identified as the port of Podouke, known as an emporium in the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea and Ptolemy. Digs have found Amphorae, Arretine ware, Roman lamps, glassware, glass and stone beads, and gems at the site. Based on these excavations, Wheeler concluded that the Arikamedu was a Greek (Yavana) trading post that traded with Rome, starting during the reign of Augustus Caesar, and lasted about two hundred years—from the late first century BCE to the first and second centuries CE. Subsequent investigation by Vimala Begley from 1989 to 1992 modified this assessment, and now place the period of occupation from the 2nd century BCE to the 8th century CE.
Significant findings at Arikamedu include numerous Indo-Pacific beads, which facilitated fixing the period of its origin. Red and black ceramics—known as megalithic stones or Pandukal in Tamil meaning old stones and used to mark graves—have existed at the site even prior to and during Roman occupation of the site, and also in later periods.

The City of Puducherry on the southeast coast of India does not have a vishva history from antiquity.Puducherry has history recorded only after the advent of the colonial powers such as the Dutch, Portuguese, English and the French.Nearby places such as Arikamedu, Ariyankuppam, Kakayanthoppe, Villianur, and Bahur, which were annexed by the French East India Company over a period of time and became the Union Territory of Puducherry after Independence, have written histories that predate the colonial era.

White Town #Pondicherry | Arikamedu | #ReshOnWings
White Town of Pondicherry :
#Pondicherry also known as #Puducherry, happened to be the first choice for my solo travel. This place in south India was once the largest French colony in India and still retains its french charm amazing the tourists.
In this video you can see me exploring White town and Arikamedu.
White Town or the French Quarters of Pondicherry is where you can experience the french vibe in architecture, cuisine and even in the residents. No wonder this place is referred to as Mini France in India. Take a stroll or a guided walking /cycling tour to explore this place of history to know more.
Arikamedu is another destination in Pondicherry that should not be missed. It was initially a fishing town and later converted to a port and now tourists visit this ancient port to see the remains.
It is an archeological site where excavations happen.
What I enjoyed -
♡ Strolling through the streets of #WhiteTown
♡ Tasting French Cuisine in WhiteTown
♡ Exploring Pondicherry as a solo women traveller
♡ Trip to Arikamedu to see the ancient port remains

More information about the video content bellow:
1. Puducherry formerly known as Pondicherry, is a union territory in India. It was formed out of four exclaves of former French India, namely Pondichéry, Karikal (Karaikal), Mahé and Yanam. It is named after the largest district, Puducherry. Puducherry is the 29th most populous and the third most densely populated of the states and union territories of India.
2. Situated on the south-east coast of India, Puducherry aka Pondicherry offers glimpse of France in India. Close to Promenade Beach is a White Town area, which is built in such a way that it resembles cities of France. In 1673, French people started migrating to Puducherry which today is a Union Territory. In order to feel home, they started to built houses following the French style of architecture. And before anyone realized, this region was filled with these organized French residences, which now is known as the Little France.
3. Pondicherry, officially known as Puducherry, is the capital and the most populous city of the Indian Union Territory of Puducherry. We can best describe Pondicherry as a paradise on the earth having great picturesque views and also serene atmosphere. Pondicherry is not only sprinkled with numerous attractions but also blessed with natural beauty in abundance.
4. Sri Aurobindo's spiritual collaborator, Mirra Alfassa, also known as the Mother, founded Auroville in 1968. Her aim was to create a town where people of all nationalities could live in peace and progressive harmony, and true to her ideal, the place is a study of calm and composed. Several workshops and therapies in and around the area help people get over their personal demons and be at peace once again. Even for the casual visitor, Auroville is an enchanting place.
5. There are 32 churches in Pondicherry such as Church of Our Lady of Angels, Sacred Heart Church, Dupleix Church, Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Immaculate Conception Cathedral to take the name of few of the biggest and oldest ones. Their beauty lies in the French architecture and the solace they hold within. Irrespective of your religion, just a few minutes of silence and reflection within these churches can put your mind at peace.
6. Arikamedu is an archaeological site in Southern India, in Kakkayanthope, Ariyankuppam Commune, Puducherry. Digs have found Amphorae, Roman lamps, glassware, glass and stone beads, and gems at the site. Based on these excavations, it was concluded that the Arikamedu was a Greek trading post that traded with Rome.
7. One of the best things about Pondicherry is the beaches. There are 4 main beaches: Promenade beach, Paradise beach, Auroville beach and Serenity beach. They are never too crowded and, compared to other beaches in India, the beaches in Pondicherry are pretty clean and well kept. And there is nothing quite as refreshing as sitting by a beautiful beach!
