Australian of the Year: Bernie Shakeshaft, BackTrack Youth Works Program #AOTY2020 #ausoftheyear
After seeing the plight of disadvantaged youth in his community, Bernie Shakeshaft decided to take action. Starting with a shed and an idea, in 2006 Bernie founded the BackTrack Youth Works Program, turning around the lives of some of Australia's most vulnerable kids.
Using the skills he developed growing up and as a jackaroo in the Northern Territory learning from the Aboriginal trackers, Bernie developed an award-winning program that uses animal-assisted learning, agricultural skills, and a residential facility. He and his extraordinary team have helped over 1,000 children reconnect with their education, training, families, and community, offering them love and support to live out their hopes and dreams
The BackTrack program, now the subject of a documentary Backtrack Boys, has the support of magistrates, police, and mayors. It has helped decrease Armidale's youth crime rate by over 38 per cent, saving millions of dollars, and keeping children out of correctional systems.
Bernie's kind, effective approach is life-changing and inspiring.
Each year our nation celebrates the achievements and contributions of eminent Australians through the Australian of the Year Awards by profiling leading citizens who are role models for us all.
They inspire us through their achievements and challenge us to make our own contribution to creating a better Australia.
The Awards honour an exceptional group of highly respected Australians who ignite discussion and change on issues of national importance.
The Australian of the Year Awards provides everyone with the opportunity to recognise any Australian who makes them proud.
The four Australian of the Year categories are:
Australian of the Year
Senior Australian of the Year (those aged 65 years or over)
Young Australian of the Year (ages 16 to 30)
Australia's Local Hero
The Awards operate at two levels - State/Territory and national.
State and Territory selection committees select four nominees for each Award category, with one of these nominees being announced as the State/Territory Award recipient.
The National Australia Day Council Board selects the Australians of the Year from the group of 32 State and Territory recipients.
The prestigious year-round program culminates in the announcement of the National Award recipients in Canberra on Australia Day Eve.

(N). BALLAD OF BLOOD RED ROCK... Wilderness Warbles # 27. (Entry, E-Quality).
True Story.....
On the way to Dad's Holiday House at Red Rock, I used to play in the Sandpit at Blackadder Creek ; while my parents drank tea inside, with old friends of my father.
As a teenager, I used to run laps of a Cross-Country Course which began at the Sandhills, went along the Back Beach, up the Headland at the almost-vertical Grass, beside the Waterline, over the top, down to the Little Beach, & to the Mouth of the Redbank Creek...; at that point, I always felt totally wrong, to be running back along the Waterline to the Village of Red Rock, & I always felt I SHOULD be swimming the River & running on Northwards, to Barcongerie...
The closer to the Old Shop I got, the more I used to have the urge to hide...
For 6 years, when I was at Boarding Schools, Red Rock was where I went for School Holidays, it was my Home Town...; when I finished my training as a General Nurse, I went to Red Rock for 3 months.
In 1994, I moved into a rented house at Skeleton Creek, 15 Km East of Glen Innes, where a Songwriter used to live...; in 1995, I found myself talking in rhymes, so I wrote a bit of it down, & in '96 I published a book of Poetry.
In '97, replacing Judith Wright, I was appointed Poet- In-Residence by the Armidale Environment Centre, & Concert Performance Poet for Uni. Of New England Chapter of Friends Of the Earth...; we stopped a Pumped-Storage Hydro Scheme, & shut an Acid Heap-Leach Goldmine in the Headwaters of the Clarence River....
In late 2000, I moved back out of the Songwriter's House at Skeleton Creek, & in The last week of October I heard that on the Radio that the Corindi Aboriginal Keeping Place were going to unveil a Memorial Plaque on the Red Rock Headland, to mark the endpoint of the Massacre which had begun at Blackadder Creek...
And a Lifetime of loose-ends, snippets, fragments of overheard conversation, observations..., and Feelings, connections to the Dreaming, it ALL Bubbled up.
So, I spent a fortnight walking in circles, in tears, bouncing rhymes & couplets of Trees & Birds & Wallabies & Kangaroos...; and I found I had an outrageously clear & detailed vision of what went on...
Apparently, that's what happens when a Poet grows up sleeping on a Massacre Site...
I haven't written any serious poetry since this Bloodrock Ballad, which I finished Polishing on 10th November 2000.
I took all the Still Photos, except those wherein I appear ; & I inherited the Copyright to them.
