The Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge, Boynton Beach, Florida, USA
The Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge includes the most northern remnant of the historic Everglades wetland ecosystem. The site is approximately 147,392 acre (596 km²).
Located in Palm Beach County, Florida, west of Boynton Beach, it is one of over 500 national wildlife refuges located throughout the United States and administered by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service.
The refuge not only preserves and protects native wildlife, but also offers compatible public recreational and educational opportunities including walking trails, a canoe trail, bike trail, boat ramps, fishing platform, observation towers, butterfly garden, and a visitor center. It is home to American Alligator, the endangered Snail Kite, and as many as 257 species of birds. As such, it has been designated a 'gateway site' for the Great Florida Birding Trail.
Not quite all of the refuge is Everglades marsh habitat. A four hundred acre Bald Cypress swamp is the largest remaining remnant of a cypress strand that once separated the pine flatwoods in the east from the Everglades marshes.
A boardwalk into the swamp gives you a chance for an up-close swamp experience without getting your feet wet. Hurricane Wilma damaged the refuge in October 2005, and the administration building was condemned.
Despite all of its treasures, the refuge is in serious danger of quickly becoming an exclusive haven for invasive plants, especially the Broad-leaved paper bark (Melaleuca quinquenervia) and Old World climbing fern (Lygodium microphyllum), both rapidly growing non-native species, which are quickly overgrowing the native flora and are likely not compatible with the native wildlife.

Arthur R Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge
11-20-14: Next, we headed to our main destination of the afternoon: A.R.M. Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge, an Everglades area that was just west of where Steve lives. All in all, it was very much worth the $5 admission fee. They had a wonderful boardwalk area to tour the swampland areas. There was even a baby alligator in a small pond towards the end. We considered taking out a canoe, but the rental fee was $33! It was also past 3:30 p.m. and they were closed. Though the skies were mostly cloudy, the temperature was a just right 75-degrees with a breeze. So it was still quite nice. We did some hiking at another area to a viewing platform to see the birds in the sawgrass areas.

Gator eating a turtle. This gator had the turtle, still in one piece, just holding it in it's mouth. After a while it just cracked the turtle in half, then began crushing it, taking breaks after a be hard bites. It was pretty gruesome, felt bad for the turtle but nature is hard and cold.

The interior of the Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge
This is footage of an airboat ride in a part of the Everglades that's closed to the public. It concludes at a stand of invasive malelucas that Fish and Wildlife Service contractors killed by slicing into the trunks of the trees and spraying the cores with herbicide. The agency has struggled for years to control the spread of maleluca and other invasive species in the refuge.
