AMERICAN REVOLUTION REVOLUTIONARY DOCUMENT 1799 TEA TAX ENGR
CLICK HERE for a 3D Virtual Tour
This is an authentic historical political engraving from 1779. Full of symbolism, it shows father time using a magic lantern to project an image of the American Revolution to an audience of the continents, with America represented by an Indian crouched in the foreground. The black woman represents Africa, the woman holding a lantern symbolizes Asia and a woman bearing a shield is for Europe. Britain is shown as a prostrate lion and France as the cock. The image shows a teapot exploding among frightened British troops as American troops advance through the smoke. The Continental Army is waving the Navy Jack flag whilst charging. On the other side of the tea pot the British soldiers flee. It is titled The Tea Tax Tempest and is dated 1779. It is professionally framed behind glass and has not been opened. It appears to be in very nice condition considering the paper is over 200 years old. There are a few minor rim tears and some creases. All in all, very nice condition. The image measures approximately 17 x 13 inches, not including the bottom wording. The bottom shows Holland and Switzerland's contests with tyrants and is pictured as emblematic of the revolt of the American colonies. The overall framed piece measures approximately 22x20 inches. It was engraved by Carl Guttenberg who was born in 1743 and died in 1790. This piece was made in 1779 during the height of the American revolution which did not end until 1783. This is a very hard-to-find image that is perfect the collector of American history memorabilia

HELP KEEP AMAGANSETT PRESS ON THE ROAD:
We believe that many of our rights and civil liberties as American citizens on American soil are at great risk and that a simple act of civil disobedience has the power to effect great change. While we have no interest or intention in breaking any law, we are willing to stand up for freedom and the constitution at any time and at any place and do so in a responsible and productive manner. It is our goal to create free and open discussion whenever possible in an effort to educate both ourselves and anyone with a desire to learn. A well known rule of government is that ignorance is no excuse for the law. It is our stand that we as Americans have been either uninformed or misinformed regarding our laws and rights for far too long. We are not attorneys or scholars, however we have been involved in professional photography for over 30 years and have had our rights and freedoms challenged more times than we can remember. No one group or person has the ability to effect change across the board, however we are committed to doing our part by continuing to stand up for our constitutional right to free press and the right to take photographs and video in public. All donations will be used exclusively to further this cause. Specifically, we need to upgrade our computer, video editing software and purchase additional video gear. We want to thank you in advance for your support of what we do and want you to know that we are committed to working harder than ever to defend our rights, your rights and the Freedom to Film in Public!!

SUMMARY
=======
Douglas MacArthur (26 January 1880 – 5 April 1964) was an American five-star general and Field Marshal of the Philippine Army. He was Chief of Staff of the United States Army during the 1930s and played a prominent role in the Pacific theater during World War II. He received the Medal of Honor for his service in the Philippines Campaign, which made him and his father Arthur MacArthur Jr. the first father and son to be awarded the medal. He was one of only five to rise to the rank of General of the Army in the US Army, and the only one conferred the rank of field marshal in the Philippine Army.
Raised in a military family in the American Old West, MacArthur was valedictorian at the West Texas Military Academy, and First Captain at the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he graduated top of the class of 1903. During the 1914 United States occupation of Veracruz, he conducted a reconnaissance mission, for which he was nominated for the Medal of Honor. In 1917, he was promoted from major to colonel and became chief of staff of the 42nd (Rainbow) Division. In the fighting on the Western Front during World War I, he rose to the rank of brigadier general, was again nominated for a Medal of Honor, and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross twice and the Silver Star seven times.
From 1919 to 1922, MacArthur served as Superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, where he attempted a series of reforms. His next assignment was in the Philippines, where in 1924 he was instrumental in quelling the Philippine Scout Mutiny. In 1925, he became the Army's youngest major general. He served on the court martial of Brigadier General Billy Mitchell and was president of the American Olympic Committee during the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam. In 1930, he became Chief of Staff of the United States Army. As such, he was involved in the expulsion of the Bonus Army protesters from Washington, D.C. in 1932, and the establishment and organization of the Civilian Conservation Corps. He retired from the US Army in 1937 to become Military Advisor to the Commonwealth Government of the Philippines.
MacArthur was recalled to active duty in 1941 as commander of United States Army Forces in the Far East. A series of disasters followed, starting with the destruction of his air forces on 8 December 1941, and the invasion of the Philippines by the Japanese. MacArthur's forces were soon compelled to withdraw to Bataan, where they held out until May 1942. In March 1942, MacArthur, his family and his staff left nearby Corregidor Island in PT boats and escaped to Australia, where MacArthur became Supreme Commander, Southwest Pacific Area. Upon his arrival, MacArthur gave a speech in which he famously promised I shall return to the Philippines. After more than two years of fighting in the Pacific, he fulfilled that promise. For his defense of the Philippines, MacArthur was awarded the Medal of Honor. He officially accepted Japan's surrender on 2 September 1945 aboard USS Missouri anchored in Tokyo Bay, and oversaw the occupation of Japan from 1945 to 1951. As the effective ruler of Japan, he oversaw sweeping economic, political and social changes. He led the United Nations Command in the Korean War with initial success; however, the controversial invasion of North Korea provoked Chinese intervention. Following a series of major defeats he was removed from command by President Harry S. Truman on 11 April 1951. He later became chairman of the board of Remington Rand.
Stolen Children: The Legacy of the Carlisle Indian School and Canadian Residential Schools
November 7, 2018
Program Introduced by KHC Fellow, Julio Meza
Speaker: Hayes P. Mauro, Associate Professor, Queensborough Community College, Art & Design Department
Short Films: Kent Monkman’s Brothers and Sisters, Released 2015, 3 mins and Stolen Children, Residential School Survivors Speak Out, Released 2015, 18 mins
Two short films based on original archival footage and the accounts of survivors of the Canadian residential schools will be screened. A talk will follow by Professor Mauro based on his book, The Art of Americanization at the Carlisle Indian School. He will speak about the social reformers, usually Christian evangelicals, who wished to Americanize Native Americans and African Americans, along with newer immigrants from southern and eastern Europe. This meant transforming them into culturally acceptable entities who looked, acted, dressed, and thought like an idealized middle class Anglo-American. Needless to say, this had ramifications for both race and gender definitions.

China Over Seas and Oceans: The Maritime Travels of Yuan and Ming Porcelains
Philip Hu, curator of Asian art, Saint Louis Museum of Art, Saint Louis, Missouri
Beginning in the early fourteenth century, Chinese porcelain made its way to many parts of the world, largely through maritime trade routes spanning East Asia, Southeast Asia, the Indian subcontinent, Persia, and the Ottoman Empire. The shapes of such Chinese porcelains, and their decoration, were often inspired by non-ceramic prototypes and specifically tailored to the varying tastes of foreign markets. This lecture examines selected highlights from the Sam and Myrna Myers Collection in connection with major types and examples of the Chinese porcelain diaspora.
This program was made possible in part with a grant from Humanities Texas, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
