Sapporo Snow Festival - Sport, Food & Art in one place!
The Winter Wonderland – Sapporo Snow Festival!
In February Sapporo annually hosts the biggest snow festival in Hokkaido – Sapporo Yuki Matsuri (札幌雪祭り). It is spread along 3 sites around the city that every year gather over 2 million visitors from all around the world.
If you plan to visit Japan during ski season – you simply must visit this amazing event.
Hundreds of snow sculptures along Odori Park and ice sculptures at Susukino site made by world’s best sculptors are presented together with those made by volunteers, amateurs and enthusiasts. You can even try to make one yourself!
Climb some of them, slide from some and even drink some hot drinks in some…There is really a lot for you to experience.
Each and every year the program and the theme of the festival is different. In 2019, there were many activities dedicated to Japan pop culture and the first virtual idol Hatsune Miku. You could even enjoy her performance or play snowballs with her in a high-tech exhibition. Also, you could find a Star Wars themed sculpture anticipating the new episode’s release. So, who knows what will be there next year, but we can say for sure – it will be amazing!

About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)
About TED
TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California 26 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. At TED, the world's leading thinkers and doers are asked to give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. Talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Benoit Mandelbrot, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Two major TED events are held each year: The TED Conference takes place every spring in Long Beach, California (along with a parallel conference, TEDActive, in Palm Springs), and TEDGlobal is held each summer in Edinburgh, Scotland.
TED's media initiatives include TED.com, where new TEDTalks are posted daily; the new TED Conversations, enabling broad conversations among TED fans; and the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as the ability for any TEDTalk to be translated by volunteers worldwide.
TED has established the annual TED Prize, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world are given the opportunity to put their wishes into action; TEDx, which offers individuals or groups a way to host local, self-organized events around the world; and the TED Fellows program, helping world-changing innovators from around the globe to become part of the TED community and, with its help, amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.

The Yamanobe no michi Trail, The Oldest Trail in Japan
Lunch was finally served in the small restaurant next to the Visitor's Center and the group set out again. The 10-mile trail ended at at Ohmiwa Jinja Shrine, the oldest along the trail with time out to shake fortune sticks. We would still be standing there if poor Yumiko had to read every fortune.
By now, it was a little past 4:00p and we ran to make the first train back to Kyoto. Got off after three stops, got on another train, got off after six stops, before one last train that ended in stunning Kyoto Station and took time to look at the outstanding views from the top (watch the previously uploaded Kyoto Station video).
The group now had bragging rights for hiking Japan's oldest trail.

born Jan.5, 1930 Frederick C. Tillis Song for Sister Hokkaido excerpt
Frederick Charles Tillis, PhD (born January 5, 1930), is an American composer, jazz saxophonist, poet, and music educator at the collegiate level.
Born in Galveston, Texas on January 5, 1930, Frederick Tillis was raised by his mother, Zelma Bernice Gardner, née Tillis (1913–2004), and his stepfather, General Gardner, and his maternal grandparents, Willie Tillis and Jessie Tillis-Hubbard (1893–1979).
His first musical experiences were courtesy of his mother, who played piano and sang to him as a child. Later, at George Washington Carver Elementary School, Tillis decided to join the school's drum and bugle corps. As he became more proficient on trumpet, Tillis found his first professional job as a musician in jazz bands when he was twelve years old, earning him the nickname Baby Tillis. Tillis' band director at Central Side High School, Fleming S. Huff, suggested that he start playing the saxophone.
In 1946, Tillis was accepted at Wiley College on a music scholarship, and thus became the first person in his family to receive a college education. He graduated from Wiley in 1949 with a B.A. in music, accepting the position of college band director there almost immediately. He also married fellow Wiley music major Louise at this time. They moved from Texas in 1951 so that Tillis could attend the University of Iowa for graduate music studies. At this time, he also decided to volunteer in the United States Air Force at the outbreak of the Korean War, and became director of the 356th Air Force Band. He later went back to get his PhD under the GI Bill at University of North Texas College of Music, but then returned to the University of Iowa to finish his doctoral studies.
Completing his PhD in 1963, Tillis then held a succession of academic positions at Wiley College, Grambling College, and Kentucky State University. In 1970, Philip Bezanson (or Randolph Bromery) recruited Tillis to the faculty of the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and he and his family moved to Massachusetts. Joining the faculty as an associate professor of music, Tillis eventually held many faculty and administrative positions during his tenure at the University of Massachusetts. He retired in 1997, but still holds the title of Professor Emeritus in the Department of Music and Dance. Tillis serves as Director Emeritus of the University Fine Arts Center and Director of the Jazz in July Workshops in Improvisation at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
Tillis had been writing music since the age of twenty, and was influenced by Schoenberg, Bach, Prokofiev, Mussorgsky, African-American composers, and world music. Some of Tillis' more notable compositions include A Symphony of Songs, a choral/orchestral work based on poems by Wallace Stevens and commissioned by The Hartford Chorale, Inc. (1999); A Festival Journey (1992), and Ring Shout Concerto (1974), for percussion, written for Max Roach; and Concerto for Piano (Jazz Trio) and symphony orchestra (1983) written for Billy Taylor. Tillis has also written several books of poetry, as well as the textbook Jazz Theory and Improvisation.

Hiroshima Okonomiyaki Lunch Experiment 広島焼き ★ ONLY in JAPAN #19
New Episode! Hiroshima Street Food on Miyajima:
Hiroshima is one of Japan's top destinations, and when you're hungry, you have to try okonomiyaki. Hiroshima has it's own original style, and it's not so simple to make.
John travels to Okonomimura, a building full of Okonomiyaki shops, for lunch. There are many different toppings you can put on okonomiyaki. In many ways, it's like a pizza! In other ways, it's like a sandwich.
Taste is a personal preference so John experiments. With the help of a friend and the shop master, he puts one together.
Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki is much different than Osaka's version. Osaka is more like a pancake with everything thrown into the batter. Hiroshima's is layered and takes time. The result is a more complex tasting meal. It's not just Hiroshima's soul food, it's super healthy and fun to eat.
About Okonomimura: It's a top destination for locals and tourists alike. It's packed with shops on 3 floors each with it's own recommended variety. Prices for okonomiyaki range from 800 yen to 1380 yen depending on toppings and ingredients.
Give it a try!

Japan Trip: Lavender, Lillies, Tractors and Trains at the Furano Flower Fields, Hokkaido 03
Japan Trip: Lavender, Lillies, Tractors and Trains at the Furano Flower Fields, Hokkaido 03
Furano (富良野) is a beautiful town in the center of Hokkaido, famous of its floral landscapes. July is a popular time to visit Furano, as the Furano famous lavender fields are in full bloom. In the winter, Furano transforms into a downhill and cross country skiing resort.
Lavender has been grown and cultivated in Hokkaido for more than half a century. However, the demand for Hokkaido’s lavender has decreased due to lower priced, imported lavender. Currently, lavender in Hokkaido is more a tourist attraction than an agricultural crop.
Furano's picturesque lavender fields bring large number of tourists to this area every summer. The majority of lavender begins to bloom in late June and peaks from mid July to early August. Though less in quantity, other varieties of lavender remain in bloom until mid August.
In addition to lavender, there are many other flowers cultivated in Furano. Visitors interested in flowers should plan to visit between June and September, though there is fluctuation between the flowers making view beautiful before and after this time period. In general, the following flowers are seen in the following time periods:
From June…rape blossoms, poppies and lupins
From July…lilies
From August and September…sunflowers, salvias and cosmos
Though there are numerous flowers fields across Furano, Farm Tomita is a popular spot. With the Tokachi Mountains in the background, the lavender and flower fields make a beautiful picture. Entry to the farm is free of charge. Visitors can explore the fields as well as the cafes and shops within the grounds to see the wide range of lavender related products this region produces. Some lavender inspired food products include lavender ice cream and lavender cream puffs.
Note: please be aware Farm Tomita is especially crowded during the peak season of lavender.
In 2008, Farm Tomita opened a second farm, Lavender East. Lavender East is located about four kilometers east of Farm Tomita. Visitors will be greeted by the most spacious of all lavender fields in Furano, covering 14 hectares, here. In addition to a shop, cafe and observation deck, visitors can ride the Lavender Bus through the lavender fields. The bus ride is 15 minutes and there is a nominal fee.
Facility Information

Visitors can enjoy experiences such as lavender cutting and flower pressing in addition to tractor rides through the lavender fields here.

Japan's White Strawberry: Luxury Fruit Unboxing & Adventure ★ ONLY in JAPAN
I was in the basement supermarket in Shibuya and -- THERE IT WAS! THE WHITE STRAWBERRY!
I could smell it a few meters away. Was it real? (Yes, it was.)
One white strawberry cost 1080 Yen (US$10.00) so I decided to learn more about the Japanese white strawberry and unbox it for you in this video ... and that is what this episode is all about. It's the door into a new world full of strawberries in Japan.
About Japan's White Strawberry:
There are so many varieties / cultivars of strawberries in Japan.
The HATSUKOI NO KAORI or “SCENT OF FIRST LOVE” is Japan's first white strawberry, different than the pineberry because of its size, softer skin and juiciness and sugar content. It was created by Miyoshi Agritech Co. of Yamanashi in 2006.
In the episode, I ate the
SHIROU HOUSEKI 白い宝石 White Strawberry.
Cost: 1080 Yen ($10) for 1.
Weight: about 50 grams
It must be eaten within 24 hours according to the store manager at Tokyu's fruit section at Foodshow. They're grown on in Saga prefecture on Kyushu Island.
Other vareties of What Strawberries include:
★ Yuki Usagi Snow Rabbit 雪うさぎ
★ Sakura ichigo Cherry Blossom Strawberry さくらいちご
★ Tenshi no Mi Fruit of the Angels' 天使の味
Featured White Strawberries
★ Shiroi Houseki White Jewel / White Gem 白い宝石
★ Hatsukoi no Kaori Scent of First Love 初恋の香り
☆ Pineberry / Popular in the UK and Europe but not available in Japan
The strawberry season in Japan is from December to March, winter being the best season because the berry ripens more slowly, building up the sugar content and color over a greater period of time. Temperature control is essential. Almost all of Japan's strawberries are in greenhouses.
I also went to my neighbor's farm in Ichikawa to learn more about strawberries in general. There are about 25,000 strawberry farms in Japan but sometimes your neighbor sells the best ones and is a great source on information. Thank you, Ota-san!
If you ever ask yourself, what is the white strawberry? This is you answer. Try one if you find them while traveling in Japan.
