The Creole Affair: The Slave Rebellion that Led the U.S. and Great Britain to the Brink of War
Author Arthur Downey discusses the most successful slave rebellion in American history. Held against their will aboard the Creole–a slave ship on its way from Richmond to New Orleans in 1841–the rebels seized control of the ship and changed course to the Bahamas. Because the Bahamas were subject to British rule of law, the slaves were eventually set free, and their presence on foreign soil sparked one of America's most contentious diplomatic battles with the United Kingdom. A book signing follows the program.

Beginning in the late 1970s, a sinister presence cast a shadow over an isolated part of central Oregon. It lurked in the background, ignored or unnoticed. Women, often vulnerable or marginalized, were disappearing.
These are the stories of the ghosts of Highway 20.

In The Blind
In the Blind, a powerful new documentary that traces the unique traditions and rich culture of waterfowl hunting in Louisiana’s Sportsman’s Paradise and explores the sport’s relevance in a global conservation effort to preserve and restore waterfowl populations, migratory flyways and fragile habitat of this imperiled region.
In the Blind transports audiences across Louisiana from coastal marshes to flooded forests to trace the history of some of the region’s most famous hunting clubs and public land hunting spots, along with the traditions and cuisine that make up this unique, renowned culture. The program features an immersive, “day in the life” of the sport’s most passionate participants, from the hunters and guides, to the card players, storytellers, cooks, decoy carvers, call-makers, wildlife conservationists, land managers and environmental journalists.
For this documentary, LPB partnered with New Orleans-based filmmaker Emma Lou Reid, producer, writer and director of In the Blind. For three years, Reid - a Minnesota native and Louisiana transplant - immersed herself in the culture, politics and landscape of duck hunting. Prior to working on In The Blind, Reid co-produced the National Telly Award winning documentary, Finding Common Ground.
LPB’s President and CEO, Beth Courtney, will interview Reid about the project during the statewide premiere of In the Blind, Thursday, December 12 at 7PM on LPB. The film will also be steaming live at lpb.org/live and on the LPB App (LPB broadcast encore Sunday, December 15 at 6:30PM). Viewers will be offered exclusive opportunities during the LPB broadcast, including a hunting camp excursion, a kayak/birdwatching tour of Bayou Manchac led by Reid, and other unique duck hunting items.
In the Blind will also air on WYES in New Orleans on Wednesday, December 18 at 8PM (encore Saturday, December 21 at 3PM).
Major funding for In the Blind is generously provided by Lipsey's, Acadian Ambulance Service and Mr. & Mrs. W. Clinton Rasberry Jr. and W. Clinton Rasberry III.
Lamb Necks, Alligators, and the Blues: Fuck, That's Delicious (Episode 5)
What do you get when you cross a lamb neck with a fan boat and blues guitar legend? You have the fifth episode of Fuck, That’s Delicious, which takes us to New Orleans. Action Bronson had some down time between touring and recording his upcoming album, so he decided to recharge by sampling some of the Big Easy’s more contemporary culinary offerings and hearing some blues firsthand. As always, Bam Bam zeroed in on the finest fried chicken at Willie Mae’s Scotch House, the best sandwiches at Coquette, late night fare at Mimi’s and a cooking lesson from the most dynamic chef in the city, Isaac Toups, of Toups’ Meatery. If all this wasn’t enough, we managed to see some gators in the flesh and witness The Little Freddie King Blues Band do their thing. Enjoy.

The House of the Rising Sun Piano vocal improvisation
The House of the Rising Sun
My mother, she was a tailor
Sewed these new bluejeans
My father was a gamblin' man
Way down in New Orleans
My mother, she would look at me
She said, son, you've got a long road ahead
Son, some may roll and make you crazy
But don't forget these words I said
And don't forget what your name is
And know what the game is
From the North coast to the South coast
From country to country
Mind to mind
Generation to generation
From time to time
And to sniff across your mind
To go downtown
And to hang around
The House of The Rising Sun
Mother was a tailor
Sewed these new blue-jeans
Father was a gamblin' man, yea yea
Way down, way down, in New Orleans
And the only thing a gambling man needs
Is some cash, ooh lord, and a trunk
And the only time he's satisfied, ya ya
Is when he's on some form of drug
Ya-aah, board and bought, oh no
To where, I do belong
I'm wandering back
To earn my pays, in The House
They call, the Rising Sun
Mother tell your baby children, yea yea
Don't do the things that I've done
Spend your life in sin and misery
In The House, they call, the Rising Sun
Ohh
House, of The Rising, Sun
The House of the Rising Sun is a traditional folk song, sometimes called Rising Sun Blues. It tells of a life gone wrong in New Orleans; many versions also urge a sibling or parents and children to avoid the same fate. The most successful commercial version, recorded in 1964 by British rock group The Animals, was a number one hit on the UK Singles Chart and also in the United States and France.[1] As a traditional folk song recorded by an electric rock band, it has been described as the first folk rock hit
I have made a study of the history of prostitution in New Orleans and have often confronted the perennial question, Where is the House of the Rising Sun? without finding a satisfactory answer. Although it is generally assumed that the singer is referring to a brothel, there is actually nothing in the lyrics that indicate that the house is a brothel. Many knowledgeable persons have conjectured that a better case can be made for either a gambling hall or a prison; however, to paraphrase Freud: sometimes lyrics are just lyrics.

An interview with Eric Burdon revealed that he first heard the song in a club in Newcastle, England, where it was sung by the Northumbrian folk singer Johnny Handle. The Animals were on tour with Chuck Berry and chose it because they wanted something distinctive to sing.[16]
The Animals' version transposes the narrative of the song from the point of view of a woman led into a life of degradation to that of a man whose father was now a gambler and drunkard, rather than the sweetheart in earlier versions.
The Animals had begun featuring their arrangement of House of the Rising Sun during a joint concert tour with Chuck Berry, using it as their closing number to differentiate themselves from acts that always closed with straight rockers.[17] It got a tremendous reaction from the audience, convincing initially reluctant producer Mickie Most that it had hit potential,[17] and between tour stops the group went to a small recording studio on Kingsway in London[17] to capture it.
