The Market on State, formerly the University Mall, is a small mall in Athens, Ohio, home of Ohio University. It was opened circa 1988 and rebranded in approximately 2006. The former J. C. Penney has been closed off from the rest of the mall and turned into a Tractor Supply. The former Big Bear was converted into the Athena Grand movie theatre. Feature on Della Zona, Village Bakery & Cafe and the Undercover Market: Athens, Ohio
Close to campus, but sometimes easily overlooked, sits Della Zona, Village Bakery & Café, and the Undercover Market on East State Street. Della Zona specializes in Italian treats from pasta and pizza to gelato and Italian sodas. The Village Bakery & Café is well known for their Sunday brunch from 9am to 2pm; but they are open throughout the week, excluding Mondays. The Undercover Market is quaint and hospitable. They sell many locally made products ranging from soaps and tote bags to jams, syrups and fair trade tea, coffee and chocolate. These stores add character to the small college town and offer access to products that may otherwise be difficult to find. The atmosphere inside both Della Zona and Village Bakery & Café is warm and inviting. The people are friendly and the food is fresh, local, and fair trade. Any student or resident of Athens who wants to feel good about their consumerism should consider paying these stores a visit.

Tales from Athens Ohio
Brother Rolling Bob and Brother Stationary Joe attempt 'Bald Headed Woman Blues', a confounded chess master reflects, an unscripted duck, Deacon Milena testifies on her scarlet days, Sister Lin meets Sister Ramona, Brother Todd comes down out of the wilderness and Friar Lost John ministers as Marlon Brando as Bob Dylan.
You may ask yourself: who are these devout souls and where is this place? Some background history might go a ways to explaining all this:
Up on the hill, above the Ohio University campus sits The Athens Mental Health Centre, known in earlier years at various times as The Athens Asylum for the Insane, The Athens Lunatic Asylum, and more recently, The Ridges -- a state operated facility for the criminally insane.
The Athens Asylum for the Insane first opened its doors in 1874 to handle the large number of American Civil War veterans suffering from battle fatigue insanity - what is now know as PTSD -- Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
During one severe budget cut, the facility was temporarily closed down with many of the former inmates let loose, many to disappear into the landscape. *
Say no more.
Amen, brothers and sisters.

Athens, Ohio - By Erin Grace
Verse 1
I´ve got a good lovin´ man in Kentucky. He thinks that everything I do is just right.
When I wake up beside him in the morning, he says go get ´em baby just don´t bite.
He´s as sweet as caramel ice cream and why he loves me so much I´ll never know,
But one thing´s for sure I´m gonna stay the hell outta Athens, Ohio.
CHORUS
´Cause in Athens there´s a cowboy
Who likes to smoke and dance and play
And when the two step´s on
Or when he´s singing my song
My hips they can´t help it but sway.
But my good lovin´ man´s in Kentucky
And I surely ain´t lettin´ him go.
And that´s why I stay the hell away from Athens, Ohio.
Verse2
I keep warm in my bed in Kentucky though the nights they turn long and cold.
My baby holds me real close and he tells me that I´m pretty and he´ll love me til we both grow old.
But as my eyes fall asleep and my thoughts wander off
There´s only one place they all wanna go
And that´s up across the river well beyond the state line
Into Athens, Ohio
CHORUS
Verse 3
I finally left that man in Kentucky. Broke his heart but I couldn´t take anymore.
So I gathered my belongings and I packed ´em up in boxes and I walked myself right out his door.
Now there´s a cowboy on my mind and an atlas in the front seat with four hours of road to hoe.
From Louisville, Kentucky hang a right in Cincinnati on to Athens, Ohio.
´Cause in Athens there´s a cowboy
Who likes to smoke and dance and play
And when the two step´s on
Or when he´s singing my song
My hips they can´t help it but sway.
And now there´s nothing to keep me in Kentucky
So I know exactly where I´m gonna go.
´Cause I can't stay the hell away from Athens, Ohio.
