Great Places to Hike in Atlanta: Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area
Plan your visit here:
arabiaalliance.org
Here in Atlanta, The Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area is a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and just enjoy what nature has to offer. With the many natural and historic attractions, there are many stories hidden in the granite outcrops throughout the land.
The Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area is home to dozens of rare plant species, especially on the granite outcrops. Adapting over time to the seeming harsh, rocky conditions these plants are colorful and very fragile. Watch where you step on the outcrops to avoid damage. The brilliant red diamorpha, seen up close at the left, is among the most striking. Other highlights include Sunnybells, Sparkleberry and the Yellow Daisy. Spiderwort and pokeweed are found in the forests while daylillies, goldenrod and Queen Anne’s lace cover fields and trail edges. Scroll through the slideshow to see some of the beautiful plant life in the Heritage Area.

Contact Panola Mountain State Park to spend a night in a tree!
The seemingly barren landscape of Arabia Mountain is the most easily identified landscape of the Heritage Area.
The mountain itself is part of the 2,550 acre DeKalb County park called the Davidson – Arabia Nature Preserve. The Preserve also includes other large formations of exposed granite, wetlands, pine and oak forests, multiple streams, and two lakes. The rare, native plant species, such as the signature red diamorpha in the winter and fall’s yellow daisies, make it seem as though the rock is in constant metamorphosis.
While the Preserve is considered an exceptional ecological wonder the area is also very much influenced by the hand of man. The evidence of quarrying activities are apparent in the industrial debris left on the mountain and of the abandoned structures once used by workers for storage, offices and shelter. The ruins of quarry buildings are found interspersed throughout the park and metal spikes that were used to split the granite are still embedded in the rock.
Visitors can navigate the preserve through miles of hiking trails and a multi-use PATH bike trail. The trails of theBike on PATH at Arabia Nature Preserve and Arabia Mountain are open to the public from dawn to dusk. There is no fee for parking or for use of the trails. Leashed dogs are welcome. Fishing is permitted, with a valid state license, at Arabia Lake. Special groups tours and education programs also available. Please contact the Preserve offices at 770-484-3060 for more information and scheduling.
Parking facilities are located at the nature center at 3787 Klondike Road and at the base of Arabia Mountain and AWARE at 4158 Klondike Road. Rangers offer guided hikes at 8am on Friday, and Sunday. Check our events schedule here for more details.

About The Cane River Film Festival:
Our Mission is to showcase, nurture and support the emerging creative filmmakers. At the Cane River film festival, we pride ourselves on building a unique and powerful hub for Louisiana films.
The Cane River film festival is produced by the Resurrection Fern Foundation, Inc. a Louisiana non-profit 501(c)3 organization founded in 2012 with the mission of historic preservation of the Cane River Creole heritage. We want to share our Louisiana stories with a World wide audience, seek opportunities for distribution and celebrate student and independent filmmakers achievement in telling the stories they want to tell.
About Natchitoches Louisiana:
In all of Louisiana, no other place is as unique as the Cane River Country. Located in Central Louisiana on Interstate 49, you will find the original French Colony in Louisiana. Established in 1714, Natchitoches (Nack-a-tish) retains its European flavor through its architecture, heritage and lifestyle. At the heart of this National Historic District lies Front Street, a brick thoroughfare where wrought iron balconies, restaurants and shops face the beautiful Cane River Lake.
There are guided tours available through the National Landmark Historic District. Fort St. Jean Baptiste, a replica of the 1732 French colonial fort is open Wednesday - Sunday with an interpretation of how the French marines lived in colonial days. The historic district hosts several art galleries, a museum and more.
Chances are, the thing you’ll love most about Natchitoches (aside from the famous meat pies) is the charming 33-block Landmark district-a shopper’s paradise and a bed & breakfast lover’s dream. Natchitoches is the Bed & Breakfast Capital of Louisiana with over 35+ inns offering 125+ rooms that range from rustic to elegant town homes, many within walking distance of the historic district. Natchitoches hosts nine nationally recognized motel chains with 800+ rooms plus two locally owned inns.
Natchitoches, well known for the filming of Steel Magnolias, is also known as the “City of Lights”. The world-famous Natchitoches Christmas Festival is always held on the first Saturday in December. Events throughout the year fill out the festival calendar for a great time any time of year.
The Cane River National Heritage Area Trail includes plantations open daily along the Cane River Road including Melrose, Magnolia, the complex at Magnolia Plantation referred to as the Cane River Creole National Historical Park, and the newest National Park located at Oakland Plantation.
Westward along the El Camino Real, lie three State historic sites; Los Adaes, Fort Jesup and Rebel State Park which includes the Louisiana Country Music Museum.
The Natchitoches Events Center, opened in 2005, is a 39,000-square-foot event center in the National Historic District within walking distance of shops, restaurants, attractions and accommodations.
The recently opened Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame and Northwest Louisiana History Museum sits proudly at the edge of Front Street, honoring more than 300 legendary Louisiana athletes, coaches and other sports figures, such as Shaquille O’Neal, Anna Koll, and Tommy Hodson among others in its latest class of inductees. Other sports-themed exhibits and interactive media trace the history and importance of sports to life in Louisiana.
