Au Sable Point Light 2014
Hiking to Au Sable Lighthouse
Au Sable is at the eastern edge of Pictured Rocks NL and about 10 miles west of Grand Marais MI.
I’ve always been a fan of the very popular 1976 song “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” by Gordon Lightfoot. The song tells the story of (at the time) the largest Great Lakes ship and its ill-fated voyage into a hurricane-force storm. The ship was lost with 29 lives. So it gave me chills to be standing on a spot just 40 miles due south of its resting place. The actual shipwreck occurred a year earlier in November 1975. The bottom of Lake Superior is littered with many lesser known shipwrecks. The existence of Au Sable Light Station gives testimony to the need for warning of impending danger to ships approaching too close to the shoreline.
My shaky video made even more so by the presence of stable flies that were constantly torpedoing me. Anybody who has been to the beach on the eastern shores of Lake Michigan knows of these pesky blood-suckers!

Sunrise at Grand Sable Dunes - Grand Marais Michigan
A stunning and peaceful sunrise over the Grand Sable Dunes at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. This is the Log Slide overlook near Grand Marais. Pictured Rocks stretches along the shoreline from Munising to Grand Marais.
Au Sable Point Lighthouse - Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore
During our road trip of Michigan's lovely Upper Peninsula we stopped at many of the scenic lookouts and public viewing spots.
The day this video was made we had stopped at the Au Sable Light Station along the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. It was a goofy August day, threatening rain and then becoming sunny and warm.

Michigan's Upper Peninsula
Ever since I was two years old my family has camped at Muskallonge Lake State Park in Michigan's U.P. Despite having camped here roughly twenty five times in my life, this area of Michigan holds a special place in my heart ,and it never gets old. This year I decided to film some of the areas that we love so much so I could share it with those who may have never been here. Unfortunately we didn't go too many places this year so many of my shots are of Lake Superior. This lake is unrivaled in power and beauty when it comes to the Great Lakes. If you haven't seen her yet you must add it to your travel bucket list.
Areas shown are Mackinac Bridge, Grand Marais, Muskallonge Lake State Park Lake Superior shoreline, the Log Slide, Munising Falls, Au Sable beach, Au Sable Lighthouse, Horseshoe Falls, Wagner Falls.

CRISP POINT LIGHT HOUSE
Crisp Point was one of five Lake Superior U.S. Life-Saving Service Stations along the coast between Munising and Whitefish Point. It is located about fourteen miles west of Whitefish Point. It was built in 1875 and became operational in 1876 as Life Saving Station Number Ten, of the U.S. Life-Saving Service District 10 (it was later part of District 11) . Crisp Point inherited its name from one of the Life Saving Station keepers, an iron-willed boatman named Christopher Crisp. The other four Life-Saving Stations were Vermillion Point (now Vermilion), Two Heart River, Deer Park (formerly Sucker River Station and Muskallonge Lake Station) and Grand Marais.
Crisp Point Lighthouse was first proprosed in 1896 and every year thereafter until finally approved in June of 1902. The land was purchased--fifteen acres--at a price of $30.00. The deed was dated May 21, 1903.

Sable Falls - Michigan's Upper Peninsula - 1080p
There are almost 200 waterfalls in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Some are an easy and short hike, others more difficult. Fall is especially beautiful here but the weather unpredictable so bring your rain gear and heavy coats.
Hopefully our state government will recognize the value of our waters and change their ways.
