Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary Florida, National Audubon Society
Snapchat story on the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary in Florida, National Audubon Society.
If you missed my Snapchat story on the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary in Florida, you can watch it here.
Why is it called Corkscrew Swamp?
Back in the olden days when they used to come up out of the salt water into what is now know as the Imperial River to get fresh water for their boats -- they didn't have any wells in those days -- they'd have to take a cask and come up into the headwaters of that creek to get the fresh rain water, and it was so twisty that they called it Corkscrew Creek, or Corkscrew River, at that time. Actually, the headwaters of that was what is now known as Corkscrew Swamp.

Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is a National Audubon Society sanctuary located in southwest Florida, north of Naples, Florida and east of Bonita Springs, in the United States. The sanctuary was established to protect one of the largest remaining stands of bald cypress (Taxodium distichum) and pond cypress (T. ascendens) in North America from extensive logging that was ongoing throughout the 1940s and 50s.
The Corkscrew Cypress Rookery Association was formed in 1954 to protect the area. The National Audubon Society accepted responsibility for management and started constructing the first boardwalk through the swamp in 1955. In all, nearly 45 square kilometres (17 sq mi) of wetland was purchased or donated (most from or by the owners, Lee Tidewater Cypress Center Co. and Collier Enterprises).

Florida Panthers at Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary
Photographer Brian Hampton allowed us to share this rare trail cam footage of a female adult Florida panther and her three juvenile offspring walking through Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary in Southwest Florida on January 4, 2015. Florida's official state animal has been listed as a federally endangered species since 1967. Encounters with Florida panthers are rare, but we do encourage the public to report suspected sightings by using our online panther sighting registry. More information can be found by visiting our website: To see more of Brian's work, visit BrianHamptonPhotography.com.
Our panther research and conservation efforts are funded by the sale of our Florida panther license plates, so thank you to everyone who has invested in FWC panther research and conservation efforts over the years! To purchase a panther license plate, visit:

Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary board walk and wildlife
Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary
The Corkscrew Swamp is an incredibly magnificent natural attraction. With its cathedral-like old growth cypress forest and abundant resident wildlife, it offers some of the best wildlife and nature viewing and photographic experiences in the world. But when it was established in 1954, it was a remote wilderness, attracting fewer than 10,000 visitors annually in its early years. A 2.25-mile raised boardwalk takes visitors through four distinct environments: a pine upland, a wet prairie, a cypress forest, and a marsh. Interpretive signs along the boardwalk and a field guide and Children's Activity Book available at the admissions desk in the Blair Center allow each visitor to take the self-guided tour. Benches and rain shelters are along the trail. For those who do not wish to walk the full 2.25 miles, an optional trail shortens the walk to one mile. Volunteer naturalists are usually on the boardwalk to answer questions. Allow about 2-3 hours.

Resource Management at Audubon's Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary
Natural resource management is a priority at Audubon’s 13,000-acre Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary. Management efforts are directed by data gathered from sound scientific research. The resource management program focuses on five principle components: hydrology, invasive species, fire, wildlife and human access. Visit for more information on jobs and volunteer opportunities available on our resource management team.
Florida Panther Encounter in the Big Cypress area of the Everglades
This took place about 2 miles north of Alligator Alley (I-75) in the Big Cypress area of the Florida Everglades. I was fishing with my Brother when two Florida Panthers came out of the brush and wanted to cross the old bridge I was fishing on. Florida Panther sightings and other Everglades wildlife are fairly common if you pay attention. This was the longest Florida Panther encounter encounter I have ever had and lasted about 5 minutes. Both cats were not wearing tracking collars and I feel because they did not feel threatened (and neither did I!) it lasted much longer than most. TheOutdoorsGuy.com
Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary
This spot is run by the Audobon Society and has a boardwalk that is about 2.5 miles long. It's about a 40 minute drive from Koreshan State Historical Site.
The boardwalk wraps around the largest cypress stand in North America and is well known as a birding trail. Strangler Figs can be seen all along the walk - they are really interesting looking trees that grow up around a host.
Florida Panthers at Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary - Part 2
In July we shared a video of four Florida panthers walking through Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary on January 4, 2015. A little over a month later on February 8, Brian Hampton's trail camera captured new footage of three panthers at the same exact location. It's difficult to determine if the same panthers are documented in both videos, but capturing these incredibly candid moments of our state animal in the span of one month is truly incredible.
