Mountain Biking Avalanche Preserve Recreation Area - Boyne City, MI

The 5 mile mountain bike loop in Avalanche Park is a fun and challenging ride. I am not sure why it is not more popular. I was the only one riding it on a nice Saturday afternoon over a holiday weekend. The trail is all hard packed single track with plenty of climbs and fast descents. Near the end of the trail you are even treated to one of the best overlooks in the lower peninsula of Michigan. The older gentleman that I met at the top, told me it was in the top 10 in the world. I am not so sure about that, but it is probably in the top 10 in Michigan.
Riding the Trail: From East end of the parking lot look for the bike sign on the trail heading up into the woods. The first mile or so of the trail here is hard to follow at times because it crosses several other paths. Just try to stay on the narrow single track and you will be fine. The rest is easy to follow and is a fast and fun ride. Near the end of the trail you breakout of the woods on the top of Avalanche Mountain. By this time in the ride you have earned a short rest, so stop and take in the view. From here make sure you have a fresh set of brake pads on your bike because that last section is steep and all down hill. To pick up the trail again ride up past the upper observation deck and follow the sandy single track to the right. In just a few brake squeezing minutes you are back down in the parking area. Less advanced riders will want to definitely walk this section.

New Life for the Boyne Theatre in Boyne City, Michigan
After sitting dormant for several years, there is renewed interest in restoring life to the historic Boyne Theatre. Here is a video showing some early work in getting the theatre cleared out and ready for inspections and restoration. The new owners of the Thirsty Goat Restaurant, which also includes the theater, have offered to give the theater to the Boyne City Main Street program. The announcement was made at the State of the Community luncheon in September 2012 and the two parties officially entered into an agreement in early October to fully explore the opportunity. Before accepting the theater the Main Street program is exploring the feasibility of renovating and restoring the building. Since the theater announcement, the reaction in support of the theater has been very positive. It's obvious the community wants to see the lights of the theater glow once again. Main Street's goal is to develop a plan that utilizes all of the community's talents to create a blueprint of success for the theater. As we go through this process, all options will be considered. Good Ice - Iceboating in Boyne City with original music by Daniel Donovan Farrow
Here's some iceboating footage from Lake Charlevoix in February, 2012, along with an original piece of music that I wrote and recorded to go along with it. I'm an independent artist living in a small town in northern Michigan, and like most of us, I'm sort of barely scraping by, when we should be gliding across the ice like these folks. But, there's time to enjoy the beauty of this place, and we've had a warm winter with lots of spring-skiing at Boyne Mountain, and some first-class ice for one of the most exciting rides you can ever take. After Gordon and his buddies helped me get these shots, I took the two-seater out by myself and had a blast, even went runner up for a bit. I wrote the music to fit the video, and if you're interested in hearing more of my solo piano and original songs, feel free to e-mail me. I make my own CD's and enjoy sending out a free Christmas CD during the season. I'd love to hear from you....

Jumping fish in Lake Charlevoix, Boyne City, Michigan
Left edge, about 2/3 of the way up, at 0:02 and again at 0:06 a little to the right... The salmon are literally jumping in Boyne City, Michigan, at the mouth of the Boyne River in Lake Charlevoix. In this video, a fish jumps out of the water twice. At this time of year, you are virtually guaranteed to see several fish leaping out of the water if you watch for a few minutes. Local anglers are catching their share of the salmon as well.

009 Michigan Mountain Biking Day
June 22 has been declared Michigan Mountain Biking Day by our state government. On this episode I trail review River Bends Park in Shelby, MI. It is maintained by CRAMBA. I ride my Trek Farley through the trail, including the new section of the CK Loop. I talk about wheelies and even try jumping on the fat bike.

Cooper's Pub & Grill - opening day in Boyne City MI
Cooper's Pub & Grill opened for the first time today, and there was a good turnout of curious locals who came out to check it out for lunch. They weren't disappointed - the sandwiches and service were very good. And the inside has a warmer feel, thanks to booth seating on one side, new tables, chairs and lighting - very tastefully decorated by Cindi Mallin. Cooper's will have their grand opening the weekend of May 21.
