Windsor, CT (April 17, 2019) – The Brain Injury Alliance of Connecticut (BIAC), the state’s only nonprofit organization dedicated to brain injury prevention and recovery, today announced that the 10th Annual “Tour of Lights” Bike for Thought will take place on Saturday, May 11th at the University of Connecticut’s Avery Point Campus in Groton, CT.
The 62-mile metric century course brings riders along southeastern Connecticut’s lighthouse- and history-rich coastline, through rural hills and farmland to the turnaround point located in scenic Watch Hill, RI. There is also a 25-mile course that brings riders to downtown Mystic before returning to Groton.
Early bird pricing is available through April 22nd; entrance fees for riders are $45 for the 62-mile ride and $30 for the 25-mile ride. Adaptive riders can participate free of charge. Riders are encouraged to fundraise via the FirstGiving platform, seeking the financial support of their community, colleagues, friends and family. Participants who commit to raising $100 will have their registration waived. Registration will also be available onsite prior to the 9:00am start time. All riders can register online.
All funds raised go to BIAC in support of their ongoing mission to provide crucial services for the survivors of brain injury and their families, as well as educative initiatives for the broader community. BIAC’s programs, which include a toll-free HelpLine, Support Groups and brain injury prevention and awareness programs, serve individuals throughout the state. All services and programs are available completely free of charge.
Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a growing, though lesser-recognized, health issue facing the U.S. and the world today. Each year, more than 3.5 million Americans will sustain a brain injury, which is the leading cause of injury-related death and disability in the United States. In Connecticut alone, approximately 35,000 state residents will sustain a brain injury in 2018. While the causes of TBI are many, including strokes, sports-related injuries and car accidents, injuries sustained during combat are a growing cause; the RAND Corporation has estimated that one in five veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan have suffered a possible TBI. Brain injury survivors often face lifelong challenges and disabilities, requiring services and support from organizations like BIAC.
This year’s ride celebrates the founder and inspiration for the Bike for Thought, TBI survivor Joe Damon, a CT resident who relearned how to ride a road bike after suffering a near-death car accident and severe TBI in 2006. Cycling provided Damon with a much-needed outlet and vehicle of independence after an extended hospitalization, rehabilitation and dependence on others for basic care and everyday needs. Alongside “Team Joe”, Damon, 62, has ridden the metric century course every year since the Bike for Thought’s 2010 inception, as he plans to do again on May 11th.
The BIAC family is so proud and excited to pedal back to Avery Point for our 10th year! The Tour of Lights showcases some of the state's most beautiful land and has become a perennial favorite for area cyclists, our sponsors and the community at large. To date, the Bike for Thought has raised over $150,000 for BIAC’s crucial support services and this year, with the help of our amazing partners and riders, we hope to add significantly to that sum, said Julie Peters, BIAC Executive Director. We're committed to our mission of building brain injury awareness, being a partner in prevention and helping Connecticut's most vulnerable citizens, and their families, navigate the road to recovery.
