Axminster Trade Series AT1416VS Woodturning Lathe - Product Overview
The AT1416VS utilises the very reliable inverter technology usually found on much larger machines. Electronic variable speed is a desirable feature for woodturners, enabling fine tuning of speed to suit delicate work, larger diameters or out of balance work pieces. A three step poly-V pulley system allows three speed ranges which coupled with the load sensing inverter ensure maximum torque and stable spindle speeds. The magnetic switch unit can be placed in any convenient position on the lathe bed or headstock to suit the work in hand and incorporates on/off buttons, a speed control knob and a forward and reverse switch. An LED digital read-out of the lathe speed in RPM is a useful feature that helps control your work. 400mm(16) between centres and a 350mm(14) swing over the bed capacity is generous on a lathe this compact. Spindle indexing is achieved in 15° segments by insertion of a magnetic dowel pin. Threaded holes (3/8x16 UNC) are provided at each corner of the lathe for bench mounting. Tool post diameter 1 (25.4mm). This lathe has proved to be very popular for both teaching and craft demonstrations, not too big nor heavy but with enough capacity to show off your skills. Supplied with four prong Axminster drive centre, Axminster revolving tailstock centre, 75mm faceplate and a knock out bar.
N.B. The distance between centres will vary and be dependent on the type of centres or accessories used.

Henry Taylor Jason Breach Box Refinement Tools
These fine tools are the result of collaboration between Jason Breach, one of the country's leading woodturners, and the well respected Sheffield toolmaker, Henry Taylor. Jason is a tutor in our Skill Centre here in Axminster and many students over the years have experienced first hand Jason's enthusiasm, skill and passion for woodturning. Jason specialises in box making and for many years has felt the need for some tools that you just can't obtain off the shelf. So Jason went about adapting some of his existing tools and they worked so well that he was encouraged to let others benefit from their use. Three tools are now available, each playing a role in the production of a typical turned lidded box.
The 3/4 round nosed refinement tool was designed for fine finishing cuts on the inside recess of box lids but would be just as useful for goblet interiors. The cutting edge has a negative rake which is formed by grinding bevels on both the top and bottom of the blade giving a very forgiving tool that is less likely to catch and offering excellent control.
The square ended tool works in a similar way to the round nose tool and shares the same negative rake grinding but in a different profile. The shape of this tool makes it perfect for the transition from the side of a box into the base area. It can be difficult to achieve a good finish using conventional tools and this tool leaves a great finish on both the sides and base of a turned box. The left side of the blade looking from above is undercut and used for refining the box sides, and this angle is repeated at the nose of the blade for the end grain of the box base.
The special skew chisel is unusual in that it is supplied without a handle, and it is meant to be used in this form as Jason has found that for the precision fitting of box lids, a handle just got in the way. The tool is of oval section with a flat ground edge on the long point side of the blade for stability on the tool rest during paring cuts. The bevels that form the cutting edge are ground differently in that one is flat ground and the other is convex and this makes the tool very versatile by leaving more material behind the edge for very fine scraping cuts. These fine cuts can make the difference between a lid that fits well and a failure, so a tool designed for the job makes perfect sense. The more you use this tool, the more uses you will find for it, as it is also excellent for all manner of fine detail work.

Tools for Wooden Box Making
Crown Tools Carbide Pro Tips - Product Overview
Crown Carbide Pro turning tools are the result of a long time spent in design, research and testing. These premium quality tools fulfil the expectations of the professional woodturner.
At the business end is a solid tungsten carbide cutter, sourced from a well-respected manufacturer in the USA. The tips are made from the finest Nano Particle Carbide that is hardened to an unbelievable 93 HRC; this makes them ultra long lasting and, when the edge eventually dulls, all you need do is turn the cutter to a fresh sharp cutting edge. The Hollowing Tip turning tool has a circular cutting tip, 15mm diameter. This tool lives up to its name exceptionally well, particularly due to the beefy steel shaft. The profile makes it ideal for cutting coves in spindle work.
Crown Carbide Pro turning tools are highly efficient when turning wood and are very effective when turning acrylic, polyester and resin. The tools have good heft and mass; the 20mm x 13mm shafts are super tough, made from Chrome Valadium steel, which helps smother vibration. The weight keeps the tool on the tool's rest and, combined with a 355mm long handle, ensures effortless control. In use, the tools work best when flat and level, cutting at centre height or, with the handle slightly raised, cutting just below centre. The sides of the bar have a gentle radius allowing controlled shear cuts.

100mm Spigot Jaws
Jason Breach explains how versatile spigot jaws are and demonstrates some of their many uses.
These second generation spigot jaws have been designed to give an improved grip when working with green wood.
Similar in operation to a pin chuck, the spigot jaws are inserted into a 30mm diameter by 50mm deep hole in the blank and the jaws expanded into the hole.
It is important to use the full depth of the jaws in order to give the best possible grip and to avoid over-stressing and damaging the jaws.
Should the grip loosen during turning then another tweak on the key will soon restore it.
