On 26 August 2014, one of the most striking of Baku's new wave of architectural gems was inaugurated on the edge of the Caspian Sea: the State Museum of Azerbaijani Carpet. After something of a nomadic existence, the huge collection of 10,000 carpets from the 17th to the 20th century was granted a new home having been recognised by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of Intangible Heritage. As well as being brilliantly photogenic, the museum, designed in the form of a huge folded carpet, also houses ceramics, 14th-century metal work, bronze-age jewellery and a permanent collection of 600 carpets from the Shusha Museum of History.

Azerbaijan’s First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva and spouse of the President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Mai Thi Hanh, who is on a visit to Baku, visited the Carpet Museum, May 14.
Mehriban Aliyeva informed the guest of the carpet making art in Azerbaijan, and noted that Azerbaijan was among the leading countries of the world in this field. Mehriban Aliyeva said Azerbaijan’s traditional carpet making art was entered on UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of the World in 2010.

Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum was established in accordance with the decree No. 130 of the Council of Ministers of the Azerbaijan SSR dated March 13, 1967. From 1967 to 1993, the museum was called the Azerbaijan State Museum of Carpet and Folk Applied Arts, from 1993 to 2014 – State Museum of Carpet and Applied Arts named after Latif Karimov, from 2014 to 2019 – Azerbaijan Carpet Museum, and from 2019 to the present – Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum. The first permanent exhibition was presented on April 26, 1972, in the building of the Juma Mosque, an architectural monument of the 19th century, located in Icherisheher (Old City). The national leader of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev, who provided great support to the museum from the first days of its establishment, took part at the opening ceremony. In 1970–1980s, with the constant help of the country’s leadership in the person of Heydar Aliyev, Museum had regular opportunities to purchase crafts and thereby replenish its collections. In those years, masterpieces of Azerbaijani Carpet Weaving Art were purchased for the museum

Azerbaijani carpets stand out for their pattern and colour. Each knot has it own meaning and philosophy.
The Azerbaijani carpet is a phenomenon emerging from contacts between man and nature. The carpet is closely connected with the way of life, customs and traditions of Azerbaijan. With their history going back to the Middle Ages, Azerbaijani carpets have been woven of wool, silk and even gold and silver threads.
The Azerbaijani carpet was added to the Intangible Heritage Lists of UNESCO in November, 2010.

The Heydar Aliyev museum is located in the Heydar Aliyev Cultural Centre in Baku, Azerbaijan. It is named after Heydar Aliyev who was the first secretary of soviet Azerbaijan from 1969-1982 and president of Azerbaijan from 1993 - 2003.

Weaving Through Time at Azerbaijan Carpet Museum
Baku’s rug-shaped carpet museum offers the largest collection of Azerbaijani carpets in the world and much more besides. It exhibits pile carpets from each of the traditional Azerbaijani carpet-weaving schools – Baku, Quba, Shirvan, Ganja, Qazakh, Karabakh and Tabriz. It also has a floor devoted to the other main type of Azerbaijani carpet – flat-woven. Flat-woven carpets are classified less according to region and rather by style and technique and include the kilim, shudda, ladi, varni, zili and sumakh.

Azerbaijan Carpet Museum was established in 1967 (from 1967 to 1993 – Azerbaijan State Museum of Carpet and Applied Art, from 1993 to 2014 – Azerbaijan State Museum of Carpet and Applied Art named after Latif Karimov). At the time of establishing, it was the only museum that was dedicated to the art of carpet weaving. The main purpose of the creation of the museum was to store, research, and demonstrate unique examples of the carpet weaving art, which are the Azerbaijan’s national heritage. The initiator of the museum was Latif Karimov – an outstanding scientist and carpet weaver, the founder of the science of Azerbaijan Carpet Weaving Art, artist and teacher, author of the fundamental work Azerbaijani carpet.
