The Azure Window (Tieqa Żerqa) Limestone natural arch, Maltese island of Gozo
The Azure Window (Tieqa Żerqa) is a Limestone natural arch on the Maltese island of Gozo. It is situated near Dwejra Bay on the Inland Sea. The formation, which was created after two limestone sea caves collapsed, is popular with scuba divers.
The Azure Window is made of a limestone known as Lower Corallian. This is the oldest rock found on the Maltese islands. The rock, which is subject to erosion, gives Malta its distinctive coast while the Upper Corallian influences the landscape of the interior. Thickness of the limestone ranges from 23 m (75 ft) near Fort Chambray on Gozo up to 207 m (679 ft) around Marsaxlokk on Malta. The 28 m (92 ft) high arch consists of yellow to pale-grey limestones comprising the remains of the marine organism.
The arch is disintegrating because large pieces of rock have begun to fall from the underside of the arch. The rate suggests that the arch will completely disintegrate within a few years. Its dangerous condition has led to warning notices being placed along the cliffs to stop people walking over the top of the arch. In April 2012 a large piece of rock was dislocated and resulted in the window being made larger and more unstable, as well as a reduction in its nearly perfect oblong shape.

Malta Islands ... The Azure Window ( Dwejra Gozo )
Was created by waves and rough sea breaking on the rocks over a period thousands of years, on the top of two giant columns of rock.

A Tribute to the Azure Window

What can one say about a natural landmark which is no longer there?
That it was beautiful, an icon, a wonder.
That it charged you up with positive energy,
and that if you took a picture with it, it felt as it was hugging you.
It stood 28 meters tall, it was mighty and strong and yet shy and frail.
One could say it fought the elements: wind, rain, waves and people
and eventually lost to all of them.
Some say it was just a rock, more famous for its missing part than for the one that was there.
but if it was just a piece of rock, than it was a special one.
One that left you in awe in it its presence.
To me, it was like that old, quiet friend who you rarely ever visit yet expect to always be there.
To my son, in his youthful candor, it was the Azure DOOR, because really, he said, it doesn’t look like a window at all.
To Maltese and especially to Gozitans, it was our Tour Eiffel, our Pyramid, Mount Fujiyama, or the statue of Liberty .
It was our island’s book cover, our pride.
Now it’s gone.
All mountains grow ... than slowly subside, rivers form and flow then go dry and cliffs stand up tall but eventually crumble.
Nature cannot be stopped.
