My second blog. I go to B-52 memorial Park at Orlando International Airport.
Adventure Series – B52 Memorial Park – Orlando Florida
Our adventure today takes us to the B-52 Memorial Park. The B-52 Stratofortress from the Strategic Air Command was at one time assigned to the 306th Bomb Wing of the now-defunct McCoy Air Force Base which is now known as the Orlando International Airport. The airport is still using the base’s original FAA LID airport code of MCO. The Stratofortress was built in 1956 and retired 28 years later in 1984. The final flight was on 20. February 1984 from the 7th Bomb Wing at Carswell AFB in Ft. Worth Texas, to the former McCoy AFB.
We are a group of adventurers who love traveling to exciting new places. Exploring this beautiful planet for experiences & memories that last a lifetime. We seek the element of adventure that drove explorers to cross deserts, oceans & unknown expanses with no hope of return.
What we get from this adventure is just sheer joy. And joy is, after all, the end of life. We do not live to eat and make money. We eat and make money to be able to live. That is what life means and what life is for. - George Mallory.

GeoCaching is an outdoor recreational activity, in which participants use a GPSr capable device to navigate to cleverly hidden containers called GeoCaches. It is the largest real world treasure hunt with over 3.1M GeoCaches and millions more active GeoCachers playing the game worldwide.
Virtual & Earth Caches are a great way to discover new places you will not find in a travel guide. Some may lead you on a hike to amazing ruins or take you to long forgotten treasures. While others can bring you to an existing attraction to learn about its unique history.
A Virtual Cache is a type of GeoCache that involves gathering information at the cache site instead of finding a hidden container. An EarthCache is a type of GeoCache that involves learning basic geology in the field.
Of course, the adventure is in the hunt as much as it is in finding what was hidden and destined to be discovered.

B-52 Memorial park Orlando Florida
#4 B-52 Memorial Park located in Orlando Florida
Orlando’s Most Secret Attraction that Hides in Plane Site. / B52 Memorial Park and B52 Description.
It’s the Orlando attraction that is missed by most guests but is a must see. B-52 Memorial Park is located within the Orlando International Airport just off the Beachline Expressway formerly the Bee Line near runway 18L. It is a small, relatively hidden park under the control of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority (GOAA) and features a retired B-52D Stratofortress, Air Force Serial Number 56-0687, from the Strategic Air Command. The aircraft was at one time assigned to the 306th Bomb Wing of the now defunct McCoy Air Force Base. The bomber was built in 1956 and retired 28 years later in 1984. Final flight was from its last unit of assignment, the 7th Bomb Wing at Carswell AFB in Fort Worth Texas, to the former McCoy AFB, now Orlando International Airport, on February 20, 1984.
The park is located on Bear Road, accessible from Tradeport Drive just south of Beachline/SR 528 Exit 4, around the corner from where the old Orlando Jetport terminal, the predecessor to the current Orlando International Airport terminal, used to stand. The park is open from 7:00am to sunset, and is free of charge to visit. The park also contains a memorial for the Airport Authority's K-9s adjacent to the B-52.
In Search of B52 Park in Orlando Florida
We are in search of the B-52 Park located on the Orlando International Airport. Orlando was once a USAF B-52 base and part of SAC, the Strategic Air Command. The base was on high alert during the Cuban Missile Crisis in the early 1960's. The base was decommissioned and eventually the airport became Orlando International Airport. (KMCO) The USAF donated an airworthy B-52D to the city in the mid-1980s and that aircraft is now on display on the airport property. Albeit, the site is in a remote and not well frequented area.

Thanks for watching!
In March 1972 a huge B-52 Bomber crashed in south Orlando killing all on board.
It was a gray and rainy morning as a B-52D departed from McCoy Air Force base. The huge bomber was to participate in a training exercise in Georgia or North Carolina. Unfortunately, the aircraft experienced an engine failure shortly after takeoff and needed to return to the base. The aircraft never made it back and this is the story of a terrible day in Orlando history.

HIDDEN B 52 AT THE ORLANDO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
McCoy Air Force Base was named for Colonel Michael Norman Wright McCoy (1905–1957) on 7 May 1958. Col McCoy was killed on 9 October 1957 in the crash of a B-47 Stratojet (DB-47B-35-BW), AF Ser. No. 51-2177A, of the 447th Bomb Squadron, 321st Bomb Wing, which suffered wing failure northwest of downtown Orlando, Florida while taking part in a practice demonstration during the annual Strategic Air Command Bombing Navigation and Reconnaissance Competition at Pinecastle AFB, Florida. McCoy was the aircraft commander during the flight and the mishap aircraft was one of two at Pinecastle that had been modified to carry the GAM-63 RASCAL air-to-surface missile.
At the time of his death, McCoy was serving as the commander of the 321st Bombardment Wing, the host wing of Pinecastle AFB. A hugely popular figure in Central Florida, Colonel McCoy was buried at Arlington National Cemetery in a funeral that included a flyover of multiple B-47s.
Orlando, Florida B-52 Crash Friday March 31st, 1972 ABC News (Includes WFTV Channel 9 Video Footage)
@ 1:30 This is the ABC nightly news program from Friday March 31st, 1972. Earlier in the day a B-52 bomber crashed while attempting to return to McCoy Airforce Base after developing engine problems. I was 5 years old at the time. We saw the giant plume of black smoke engulf the sky from our house which is about 4 miles away. Me and my father and brother drove to the neighborhood where it crashed. I can remember seeing parts of the aircraft laying in people's yards and in the street. You can jump forward to @1:30 to view the report on the crash.
