Slickrock MTB Trail - The Most Famous Bike Trail
The whole Moab Trip Playlist:
This is Slickrock Bike Trail, an 11 mile loop in Moab, Utah. It was ridden by dirt bikers in the late 60's before becoming what is arguably the most iconic mountain bike trail in the world.
Early settlers referred to the surface as slick rock because on metal horse shoes it was a nightmare. Lucky for us, it grips tires like sandpaper.
This makes it possible to climb features that look completely absurd. We got a chance to hit some of the Jeep trails in the area, and could not believe the traction.
If you have the strength to keep spinning, every climb on the bike trail is doable. Just make sure you commit and don't stop spinning. Lose your momentum and tumble down an abrasive and unforgiving surface.
At least the helicopter ride to the hospital would have been amazing. The high desert of Utah is spectacular at all times of the year. Stopping for these views can make your first ride on Slickrock last over 5 hours, easy. A strong rider can do it in under 3. Whether you're racking up miles or enjoying the views, bring lots of water. I thought a liter would be more than enough for early October, but I was wrong. It heats up pretty fast out on the rocks.
Guide books usually rank Slickrock as a highly advanced trail. While I'd need to agree that it's pretty dangerous, there's nothing technical about it besides the super steep climbs. Most do agree that the ride is physically demanding. It looks like the hard wavy surface would let you conserve your momentum and fly halfway up the next climb, but that’s not usually the case. Sharp turns and creases in the surface will leave you pedaling hard after only a few sweet seconds of downhill.
We're pretty spoiled these days, as trail builders have become adept at stretching out the downs, but Slickrock's maintenance crew doesn't have the luxury of altering the terrain. There are no manmade features or excavations. On Slickrock, the trail is a white line drawn in paint.
From what I can see, it’s a good line to follow. Although it looks arbitrary at times, veering off of it can send you careening into a cactus patch or tumbling down a slope. Unless you know exactly what’s over the crest of the hill, you're best off following the markings.
Where the terrain allows for it, the painted lines take you on a roller coaster ride, akin to a snake run at a skatepark. Cherish these lines and bomb them brazenly, because you’ll be paying price shortly after.
Because Slickrock is such a famous trail, you can expect to share it with huge crowds at times. While I've read accounts of waiting in line to ride certain sections, it felt spacious and unrestricted when we rode it. Of course, some of the sections are shared with ATV's and Dirtbikes, but everyone is cool.
When you reach the end of Slickrock trail, you'll be pretty exhausted, and if you're like me, ready to hit one of the many eating establishments in Moab. Luckily it's a downhill ride back into town.
For advanced mountain bikers, Moab Utah offers some of the most treacherous and technical terrain around. That was the reason for our visit. Despite its mainstream appeal, Slickrock trail was still a priority; It's what you would call a bucket list trail. You’d be crazy to visit Moab and not ride Slickrock. Just make sure you come early to beat the crowds, and if you’re running inner tubes, keep your pressure well above 40PSI. I suggested that Randall reduce his tire pressure on a steep climb, and it resulted in a pinch flat later on.
While Slickrock trail is extraordinarily unique, it's not the only place in Moab you'll find this riding surface. In the next Moab video we'll have a look at Bartlett Slickrock, which is an open riding area that feels like a natural skatepark. Until then, thanks for riding with me today and I'll see you next time.

RV Travel Life | Capitol Reef Offroad (2)
The Dually was too wide for comfort on many of the roads in Capitol Reef. There were several occasions where we were passing by Class C Rentals or privately owned who were too timid to move over so we were off the road. We decided having a Jeep would be a little more fun since it is a lot more narrow and we wouldn't have to worry about going off the roads (where we weren't supposed to). We took the Jeep up to Cathedral Valley (or tried to). We took Hartnet Road and crossed the Fremont River Ford, then we went up in elevation from there.
Info about Jeep Rental: It was $160 + Tax + $10 tire insurance. We have USAA which covers us for rentals so we did not purchase extra insurance other then the tires. The reason we got tire insurance was because we were going offroading and we had overheard the previous renter couple had a flat. The maintenance on the vehicle was really poor, mostly due to people renting it to go up to Cathedral Valley. We still enjoyed the trip but it's a little more adventure then just hiking or going through the park. In our opinion a Jeep or similar vehicle might be the best way to see this area. Even better would be mountain bikes but that could be dangerous during busy times of the year.
We have one more video from Capitol Reef that we are going to put out and it's onto Moab (Tentatively). Be sure to stay tuned starting Wednesday when the videos from Moab should start coming out if everything goes according to plan. We make these videos and upload them as we go so generally it is within a day or two of making the video that is uploaded. Thanks for following our journey!

Terry Tempest Williams, the 2017–18 Writer-in-Residence at Harvard Divinity School, delivers the 2018 Ingersoll Lecture.
She has been called a citizen writer, a writer who speaks and speaks out eloquently on behalf of an ethical stance toward life. A conservationist and fierce advocate for freedom of speech, she has consistently shown us how environmental issues are social issues that ultimately become matters of justice. So here is my question, she asks, what might a different kind of power look like, feel like, and can power be redistributed equitably even beyond our own species?

Anonymous State of the State Address (Utah)
Greetings fellow citizens,
I am your sister, your brother, your mother, your father. I, like you, once believed in our government. I, like you, once respected law enforcement. I, like many of you, have had enough. It is time we respect our fellow citizens, and hold our constitutional rights above the personal gain of corrupt politicians.
The separation of church and state is vital if we wish to obtain equality for all citizens. Utah is a good example of the contamination of state by church. Everybody has the right to practice religion freely, but nobody has the right to allow their religion to dictate civil rights. We, the people, have a voice. We, the people, need to use our voices. We the people, must be the catalyst for the change that we wish to see.
Gary Herbert, the Utah governor, welcomes special interest groups like ALEC (American Legislative Exchange Council) to write Utah legislation for their personal business agendas. Gary Herbert says, in response to LGBTQ or GSM (gender sex minority) rights, that we should not have laws to punish people who do not do the right thing.
Gary Herbert passed House Bill 187, also known as ag-gag (agriculture gag) which makes it a crime to take pictures or sound recordings while on the property of any agricultural production facility, even if the person is not trespassing and even if the person is not interfering with anything. It is not hard to see the protection that this could provide to supporters of Monsanto. It is not hard to see the protection that this could provide to individuals who do not treat livestock humanely. The Humane Society has many examples of undercover videos that this bill is meant to prevent. Gary Herbert, we applaud you on standing up for our 2nd amendment right to bear arms. But you are still corrupt, and this can not be tolerated.
Utah get's an average grade of D in corruption risk. If Utah were a student, it would graduate only by the skin of it's teeth. According to Utah's report card, the areas of most trouble include, as depicted, D plus in Public access to information, this is unacceptable. D minus in Judicial accountability, this is unacceptable. D plus in State pension fund management, this is Unacceptable. F in Political financing, deplorable. F in Legislative accountability, deplorable. D in Lobbying Disclosure, unacceptable. F in Ethics enforcement agencies, deplorable. F in Redistricting, deplorable. To view your states report card, or to email report card to officials, visit stateintegrity.org/your states name.
The Utah system is corrupt beyond the politicians. Friday, November second of 2012, a 21 year old girl by the name of Danielle Willard was shot assassination style, in the back of her head, and killed during a botched undercover operation. According to a 40 page report from the district attorney, the detectives fired six shots at Danielle who was inside her car. Danielle's murderer, detective Shaun Cowley, was fired from his job on September twelfth, 2013, in attempt to restore public trust back into the West Valley City Police Department, according to Cowley's attorney.
Deseret News reports, The fate of detective Kevin Salmon, who also shot at Willard, remains undecided, and he continues to be on paid administrative leave. Accusations against officers of this narcotics team has included misplaced or mishandled drugs and money, keeping trophies from investigations, improper use of confidential informants and using GPS tracking on vehicles without a warrant.
Paid administrative leave and termination from duty is unacceptable. It is time that officers of the law face just consequences for crimes against the people.
Harm against citizens, even with non-lethal force, is seen as an act of treason and war against the people.
We are being harmed through our food supply which is contaminated with unwanted GMO products. We are being harmed by law enforcement officials who are not held up to the same ethical standards as the rest of society, such as officials who do not face jail time for killing unarmed citizens.
We invite you to march with us against Monsanto on Saturday, October twelfth, at noon. You are what you eat, and America, what we are eating is very, very scary.
Get involved, stand up, show this tyrannical government system diseaseing our country, that we have a voice and we know how to use it. We the people are the catalyst for the change that we wish to see.
When governments fear the people there is liberty. When people fear the government there is tyranny.
We Are Anonymous,
We Are Legion,
We Do Not Forgive,
We Do Not Forget,
Don't expect us, for we are already here.
Choosing to fly | Steph Davis | TEDxBoulder
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. We can decide between allowing things to weigh us down or we can decide to fly.
Steph Davis is a professional climber, known for her free ascents of El Capitan, testpiece cracks in the Moab desert, and her numerous alpine ascents in South America, the Karakorum and the Arctic. She was the first woman to free climb the Salathe Wall on El Capitan, and the second woman to free El Cap in a day. She made the first one day ascent of Torre Egger in Patagonia, and was also the first woman to summit the peak. Steph is the only woman to free solo the Longs Peak Diamond and was the first person to free solo the North Face of Castleton Tower (followed by a BASE jump from the summit).
Steph is also an avid BASE jumper and wingsuit pilot. A member of the elite Squirrel team, she is one of just a few people in the world, and the only woman, to be combining free soloing with BASE, and has made a specialty of climbing and jumping desert towers in the Utah desert.
Steph has written two books, High Infatuation and Learning to Fly, and she blogs at highinfatuation.com. She owns and operates Moab Base Adventures in Moab, Utah, a base jumping and climbing guide service.

Mitch Dobrowner: Still Earth | Talks at Google
PART 1
Since picking up a camera after a 20-year hiatus, Mitch Dobrowner has done much more than make up for lost time; he’s secured a place for himself in the annals of landscape photography. He shoots, for the most part, in remote locations, and in the case of his dramatic storm pictures, he seeks out, chases and braves weather conditions from which most of us would run. But beyond getting himself to the right place at the right time, Dobrowner brings with him an artist’s passion and a scientist’s understanding—both of what he sees and how the camera sees—as well as a fair amount of blood, sweat and, presumably, joyful tears. In an age when black-and-white landscape photography is too often considered anachronistic, photographer Mitch Dobrowner literally never wavers from his monochromatic view of the world, as he makes images literally unlike any that have come before. To call him a landscape photographer may be technically accurate, but it doesn't do justice to the one-of-a-kind, jaw-dropping images that have now taken a prominent place in the world of fine art photography.
Mitch is represented by galleries world-wide and has had his prints collected by multiple fine art museums in the United States. He has 3 books currently published (by Aperture and 21st Editions) and has also had work shown in National Geographic, The Wall Street Journal, ABC News, CNN, Time Magazine, NPR, Audubon Society, the LA Times and various other publications.
PART 2
Our job is to record, each in his own way, this world of light and shadow and time that will never come again exactly as it is today.
Edward Abbey 1927-1989
