Giant Live Oak Tree on Bald Head Island, NC with Hollow Cave Like Center
The Timmons Oak at Bald Head Island, NC, a very large and old Live Oak tree that has its heartwood of trunk eaten out by termites, leaving the outer shell and bark. One can carefully enter the trunk of the tree much like a tree cave, and stand completely inside it surrounded by the tree as seen in this video, some of the limbs seem hollow, and light can be seen entering openings where knots and solid limbs once were. Truly a beautiful and awe inspiring sight!

Amanda & Jon | Elegant Island Wedding
May 14th, 2016 just may have been the most beautiful day of the year, and when you find yourself on Bald Head Island with the light breeze and the gentle sunshine... you might think you're dreaming.
Amanda and Jon, as the bride's father says, are the kinds of people that are so utterly happy together, that you can picture them 60 years from now, walking down the beach, holding hands and thoroughly entranced with one another even after decades have passed. We just hope that when they renew their vows on BHI, years down the road, they send us a picture so we can see that their smiles have not changed.

Merchants Millpond State Park, North Carolina
Located in rural Gates County in eastern North Carolina, Merchants Millpond State Park is a unique wetland environment consisting of Bald Cypress and Beech groves as well as pine forests. The pond, formed by impounding Bennets Creek, was originally named Norfleets Pond, but as gristmills and farm supply businesses thrived around the pond, the area began to be referred to as Merchants Millpond. In the 1960s, a land developer named A.B. Coleman purchased the property. An avid outdoorsman, Mr. Coleman wished to preserve the pond and surrounding wetlands. He eventually donated over 900 acres of land to the state. Today the park is over 3200 acres.
In this visit to the park, I first explore the boat launch, dam, and fish ladder, all located near the highway. Afterwards I take a short hike out to Cypress Point via the very scenic boardwalk. Then I started the Coleman Trail. I decided to abandoned the Coleman Trail for a little bushwhacking along the perimeter of the pond.

Holden Beach, NC from 1217ft Up - Sunset Sky Cam
Ranked among the Top 10 Family Beaches in the US by National Geographic's, TRAVELER Magazine, Holden Beach is a barrier island, located on the southern coast of North Carolina.
In 1756 Benjamin Holden purchased the island now known as Holden Beach. His family farmed and fished here for generations. They began developing the resort community that thrives today in the 1920s. It maintains its nostalgic appeal today with low density and limited commercialism.
The bridge that connects the mainland to Holden Beach rises 65 feet above the Intracoastal Waterway, provides a breathtaking view of the ocean and a sweeping entry to the island as visitors come across it. The beach and the ocean are the main attractions in this town, which prides itself on a restful, quiet lifestyle.
With 9 miles of oceanfront, Holden Beach is the longest and the largest of the three islands in the group known as the South Brunswick Islands. The island is a jogger's paradise and, as of this writing, the town is applying for funds from the N.C. Department of Transportation to prepare a plan for bicycling in town.
Approximately 930 year-round residents call Holden Beach home, and though the population swells to more than 10,000 during the season, visitors find a host of opportunities for assimilating themselves into this exceedingly quiet community. Boating, surf fishing and hiking the island are very popular activities.
There is a fishing pier, and the island is a sea turtle habitat as well. While there are limited commercial establishments on the island, the causeway leading to the island is lined with specialty stores and shops and a Food Lion grocery store. The Town of Shallotte, just 10 minutes, away has several shopping centers, which include grocery stores and national chain department stores.
A little more than 30 minutes away you will find Wilmington and Myrtle Beach, and there are numerous golf courses nearby.
The Town of Holden Beach was listed in the 2007 AAA Beach Vacation Travel Journal as one of the top 30 beaches in the country.
Holden Beach made the list of the 38 Best American Beaches in the July/August 2007 edition of National Geographic Smart Traveler magazine, and has officially received National Healthy Beach status through the National Healthy Beaches Campaign.
