Balinese Monkey Chant - Kecak, October 2016 - Ubud, Bali, Indonesia
Kecak in Ubud, Bali, Indonesia on the evening of October 8th, 2016.
Also known as the Ramayana Monkey Chant, the piece, performed by a circle of at least 150 performers wearing checked cloth around their waists, percussively chanting 'cak' and moving their hands and arms, depicts a battle from the Ramayana. The monkey-like Vanara led by Hanuman helped Prince Rama fight the evil King Ravana. Kecak has roots in sanghyang, a trance-inducing exorcism dance.
Kecak was originally a trance ritual accompanied by male chorus. In the 1930s, Walter Spies, a German painter and musician, became deeply interested in the ritual while living in Bali. He adapted it as a drama, based on the Hindu Ramayana and including dance, intended for performance before Western tourist audiences.

Bali is a province of Indonesia. The province covers a few small neighbouring islands as well as the isle of Bali. The main island is located in the westernmost end of the Lesser Sunda Islands, lying between Java to the west and Lombok to the east. It is one of the country's 34 provinces with the provincial capital at Denpasar towards the south of the island.
With a population recorded as 3,890,757 in the 2010 census,[5] and currently 4.22 million,[6] the island is home to most of Indonesia's Hindu minority. According to the 2010 Census, 83.5% of Bali's population adhered to Balinese Hinduism[4] while most of the remainder followed Islam. Bali is also the largest tourist destination in the country and is renowned for its highly developed arts, including traditional and modern dance, sculpture, painting, leather, metalworking, and music. A tourist haven for decades, the city has seen a further surge in tourist numbers in recent years.
The tourism industry is primarily focused in the south, while significant in the other parts of the island as well. The main tourist locations are the town of Kuta (with its beach), and its outer suburbs of Legian and Seminyak (which were once independent townships), the east coast town of Sanur (once the only tourist hub), in the center of the island Ubud, to the south of the Ngurah Rai International Airport, Jimbaran, and the newer development of Nusa Dua and Pecatu.
Kuta Beach is a popular tourist spot in Bali
An offshoot of tourism is the growing real estate industry. Bali real estate has been rapidly developing in the main tourist areas of Kuta, Legian, Seminyak and Oberoi. Most recently, high-end 5 star projects are under development on the Bukit peninsula, on the south side of the island. Million dollar villas are being developed along the cliff sides of south Bali, commanding panoramic ocean views. Foreign and domestic (many Jakarta individuals and companies are fairly active) investment into other areas of the island also continues to grow. Land prices, despite the worldwide economic crisis, have remained stable.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A BALINESE FAMILY - BE BALINESE - TRAVEL WITH KIDS
We were so lucky to meet up with Sumi again and get an invite to his place to spend a day with him and his family learning what it's like to live like a traditional Balinese family.
Sumi met me at my place and gave me some traditional Balinese clothing and then we went off to the market to buy fresh food for lunch. He lives in an incredible old school village that is car free, where the homes neatly line the streets. With no locks on the doors, friends, neighbors and tourists are free to come and go as they please seeing how Balinese people kick it.
I learned the art of steaming rice to perfection, how to make chicken sate and how to say thank you to the gods in a puja before we sat to eat.
After a delicious lunch prepared with love, we headed off to Tirta Empul, the water temple to get washed clean of all our negative thinking.
You can book Sumi's Be Balinese experience with him directly by email: sumiarsaiwayan@gmail.com
Also, he's available to help navigate any temples or to teach you about the culture and Hindu faith here in Bali, which was the most incredible gift we have gotten so far. He is a wealth of knowledge and history and is totally open to share his culture with anyone willing to learn. I cannot gush enough about how amazing Sumi was at hosting us in Ubud.
DISCLAIMER: ***If you decide to go to any temples while visiting Bali, please don't be a cheap tourist and book yourself a guide - this makes you a classy mf for the following reasons:
1. if you violate temple policies you cost the town and people lots of money to repair your shaming ways and you look like a real ass
2. there is little information at temple sites about how to conduct yourself properly or the history and significance of each site which a guide can enlighten you on (learn yourself something fool)
3. You are providing jobs for locals which is a respectful way of saying thanks for letting me into your house, let me help you help me learn something outside of my own skewed world vision.
Be a traveler, not a tourist in life: respect, love, integrity.

Bali FMA - Ubud Day Trip- Jungle Temple, Coffee Farm...

The Ubud Monkey Forest is a nature reserve and temple complex in Ubud, Bali. Its full name as written on a welcome sign is the Padangtegal Mandala Wisata Wanara Wana Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary. The complex houses approximately 605 Crab-eating Macaque (Macaca fascicularis) monkeys (39 adult males, 38 male sub adult, 194 adult females, 243 juvenile and 91 infants —2011—).[1] There are four groups of monkeys each occupying different territories in the park. The Sacred Monkey Forest is a popular tourist attraction in Ubud, and is often visited by over 10,000 tourists a month.[2] The forest comprises approximately a tenth of a square kilometer (approximately 10ha or 27 acres)[3] and contains at least 115 different species of trees.[4] The Monkey Forest contains the Pura Dalem Agung Padangtegal temple as well as a Holy Spring bathing temple and another temple used for cremation ceremonies.[5] The Monkey Forest is owned by the village of Padangtegal, and village members serve on the Monkey Forest's governing council. The Padangtegal Wenara Wana Foundation manages the Monkey Forest and serves to maintain its sacred integrity and to promote the sacred site as a destination for visitors. More info visit:

Unlike most of Muslim-majority Indonesia, about 93.18% of Bali's population adheres to Balinese Hinduism, formed as a combination of existing local beliefs and Hindu influences from mainland Southeast Asia and South Asia. Minority religions include Islam (4.79%), Christianity (1.38%), and Buddhism (0.64%). These figures do not include immigrants from other parts of Indonesia.
When Islam triumphed over Hinduism in Java (16th century), Bali became a refuge for many Hindus. Balinese Hinduism is an amalgam in which gods and demigods are worshipped together with Buddhist heroes, the spirits of ancestors, indigenous agricultural deities and sacred places. Religion as it is practiced in Bali is a composite belief system that embraces not only theology, philosophy, and mythology, but ancestor worship, animism and magic. It pervades nearly every aspect of traditional life. Caste is observed, though less strictly than in India. With an estimated 20,000 temples and shrines, Bali is known as the Island of the Gods.[20]
Balinese Hinduism has roots in Indian Hinduism and in Buddhism, and adopted the animistic traditions of the indigenous people. This influence strengthened the belief that the gods and goddesses are present in all things. Every element of nature, therefore, possesses its own power, which reflects the power of the gods. A rock, tree, dagger, or woven cloth is a potential home for spirits whose energy can be directed for good or evil. Balinese Hinduism is deeply interwoven with art and ritual, and is less preoccupied with scripture, law, and belief than Islam in Indonesia. Ritualizing states of self-control are a notable feature of religious expression among the people, who for this reason have become famous for their graceful and decorous behavior.[21]
Apart from the majority of Balinese Hindus, there also exist Chinese immigrants whose traditions have melded with that of the locals. As a result, these Sino-Balinese not only embrace their original religion, which is a mixture of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism, but also find a way to harmonise it with the local traditions. Hence, it is not uncommon to find local Sino-Balinese during the local temple's odalan. Moreover, Balinese Hindu priests are invited to perform rites alongside a Chinese priest in the event of the death of a Sino-Balinese.[22] Nevertheless, the Sino-Balinese claim to embrace Buddhism for administrative purposes, such as their Identity Cards.[23]
Balinese and Indonesian are the most widely spoken languages in Bali, and the vast majority of Balinese people are bilingual or trilingual. There are several indigenous Balinese languages, but most Balinese can also use the most widely spoken option: modern common Balinese. The usage of different Balinese languages was traditionally determined by the Balinese caste system and by clan membership, but this tradition is diminishing.
English is a common third language (and the primary foreign language) of many Balinese, owing to the requirements of the tourism industry

Bali, Indonesia
We've been exploring Bali in December. The weather was warm but also rainy. We've visited Denpasar, Kuta, Ubud, Batur, Singaraja areas.
The first temple we've visited was Pura Tirta Empul famous for its holy spring water, where Balinese Hindus go to for ritual purification.
We mostly enjoyed a colourful carp fish pool. You can buy fish food in the nearby shop and feed the fishes.
P.S. Be aware on a way out of the temple you'll have to go through a market maze where you'll be nagged to buy stuff.
Also, after buying the tickets to the temple don't forget to look for a sarong stall. We've completely forgotten it so been screamed at and chased out by temple security (or maybe random man, not sure).
Gunung Kawi is an 11th-century temple and funerary complex in Tampaksiring. Funeral monuments are thought to be dedicated to King Anak Wungsu of the Udayana dynasty and his favourite queens.
Beware of the sign Ladies are not allowed to enter this temple ! on the gates of one of the temples.
Sekumpul Waterfall was absolutely majestic. Take care on the way to the waterfall as the path and multiple stairs are extremely slippery.
As you'll be entering a park area you'll be asked to stop by parking men directing you to the parking space and asking for money. If you drive past them (with a scooter) you can park at local people's houses and pay directly them. Feels better paying local residents than some parking men whistling, shouting and chasing tourists for parking money.
We've seen black sand for the first time ever at Pantai Nyanyi beach. It's a beautiful place but full of plastic waste the same as many other Bali beaches... Often times plastic is already decomposing and is well mixed with the sand...
Lovina Beach is another polluted black sand beach. I definitely regret going there. The main reason we went was to see dolphins. Which we did but I wasn't aware that 25 or more tourists boats will be chasing down 5 of fewer dolphins. Felt so sorry for the poor dolphins....
If you'll be exploring the island by scooter there will be times when you'll have to stop to check navigation. Those locations are well known by local sellers so you'll probably be offered some tours or art pieces to buy as soon as you stop.
All in all, Bali was not what we expected it to be. Marketing campaigns and people on Instagram post only nice pictures and tell inspiring stories. We found Bali to be beautiful but with a lot of flaws (pollution, scammers, decreasing wildlife, woman discrimination at the temples and other stuff that makes us wonder why we went there at all).
Reasons not to go to Bali are not a joyous thing to remember and we want to forget it all, however, I wish someone gave us heads up beforehand.
