Places to see in East Bali
While many tourists to Bali focus on South Bali, there is also East Bali with historic and beautiful places to see. Bali Aga Village is a traditional Balinese village that one has to see. Tirta Gangga with its beautiful gardens. And then there is Besakih, the Mother Temple for the Balinese Hindus.
Yes, you can also climb Mt Batur as well as Mt Agung. For the latter, better in the early morning before the mists come in and you can see forever!!
Sorry no footage from the mountains.

Ubud -- Bali
**[en.]
Ubud in Bali is approx. 30 km north of Denpasar and is a major arts and cultural center of the island. Mainly painting (often on textiles) and wood and stone carving are practiced here.
The biggest tourist attraction is the Ubud Monkey Forest, an approximately 10 hectares large sacred nature reserve with some temples. Approximately 350 crab-eating macaque live here. Tourists should keep an eye on their bags because the monkeys enjoy catching prey.
Walter Spies, a German painter and musician, was appointed to Java by the Sultan of Yogyakarta as a pianist and conductor. Four years later he moved to Bali and founded Gamelan orchestras. His house, which can be visited today, became the cultural center of Bali. Later he was increasingly ostracized because of his homosexuality. In 1940 he was interned in Bali under Dutch rule and died after the torpedoing of Nias, who wanted to take him and another 400 internees to Ceylon. His paintings can be seen in the museum in Ubud.
Walter Spies housed international artists such as Charlie Chaplin. The Austrian writer Vicky Baum wrote her famous novel Love and Death in Bali in his house Ubud.

History Of Bali
The first Hindus arrived in Bali as early as 100 BC, but the unique culture which is so apparent to any current day visitor to Bali hails largely from neighbouring Java, with some influence from Bali's distant animist past. The Javanese Majapahit Empire's rule over Bali became complete in the 14th century when Gajah Mada, Prime Minister of the Javanese king, defeated the Balinese king at Bedulu.
The rule of the Majapahit Empire resulted in the initial influx of Javanese culture, most of all in architecture, dance, painting, sculpture and the wayang puppet theatre. All of this is still very apparent today. The very few Balinese who did not adopt this Javanese Hindu culture are known today as the Bali Aga /original Balinese and still live in the isolated villages of Tenganan near Candidasa and Trunyan on the remote eastern shore of Lake Batur at Kintamani.
With the rise of Islam in the Indonesian archipelago, the Majapahit Empire in Java fell and Bali became independent near the turn of the 16th century. The Javanese aristocracy found refuge in Bali, bringing an even stronger influx of Hindu arts, literature and religion.
Divided among a number of ruling rajas, occasionally battling off invaders from now Islamic Java to the west and making forays to conquer Lombok to the east, the north of the island was finally captured by the Dutch colonialists in a series of brutal wars from 1846 to 1849. Southern Bali was not conquered until 1906, and eastern Bali did not surrender until 1908. In both 1906 and 1908, many Balinese chose death over disgrace and fought en-masse until the bitter end, often walking straight into Dutch cannons and gunfire. This manner of suicidal fighting to the death is known as puputan. Victory was bittersweet, as the images of the puputan highly tarnished the Dutch in the international community. Perhaps to make up for this, the Dutch did not make the Balinese enter into a forced cultivation system, as had happened in Java, and instead tried to promote Balinese culture through their policy of Baliseering or the Balinisation of Bali.
The current chapter in Bali's history began in the seventies when intrepid hippies and surfers discovered Bali's beaches and waves, and tourism soon became the biggest income earner. Despite the shocks of the terrorist attacks in 2002 and 2005, the magical island continues to draw crowds, and Bali's culture remains as spectacular as ever.

Bali Tourist Attraction - Tenganan Village
Is the Tenganan Village a must do cultural experience or is it a tourist trap? In this video we’re going to talk about our experience at the Tenganan Village and let you know if you should even add this to your list of things to see in Bali.
Tenganan Village is the oldest village in Bali and is unique as they have their own laws and customs which are quite different from the current Balinese people.
The village is well know as one of the few places in the world you can buy double ikat weavings. This form of weaving requires the most skill for precise patterns to be woven and is considered the premiere form of ikat.
Once a year the village holds the Mekare Kare Ceremony. It looks like a very strange and painful ritual that involves fighting between the men of the village. They attempt to rub a spiky pandan leaf on the backs of their opponent.
We also discuss our thoughts on some of the reviews online of the Tenganan Village. Some reviews say this place is a tourist trap with over priced goods.

Bali is an island and province of Indonesia. The province includes the island of Bali and a few smaller neighbouring islands, notably Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, and Nusa Ceningan. It is located at the westernmost end of the Lesser Sunda Islands, between Java to the west and Lombok to the east. Its capital of Denpasar is located at the southern part of the island.
With a population of 3,890,757 in the 2010 census,[4] and 4,225,000 as of January 2014,[5] the island is home to most of Indonesia's Hindu minority. According to the 2010 Census, 83.5% of Bali's population adhered to Balinese Hinduism,[3] followed by 13.4% Muslim, Christianity at 2.5%, and Buddhism 0.5%.[6]
Bali is a popular tourist destination, which has seen a significant rise in tourists since the 1980s. It is renowned for its highly developed arts, including traditional and modern dance, sculpture, painting, leather, metalworking, and music. The Indonesian International Film Festival is held every year in Bali.
Bali is part of the Coral Triangle, the area with the highest biodiversity of marine species. In this area alone over 500 reef building coral species can be found. For comparison, this is about 7 times as many as in the entire Caribbean.[7] Most recently, Bali was the host of the 2011 ASEAN Summit, 2013 APEC and Miss World 2013
Ancient[edit]
Bali was inhabited around 2000 BC by Austronesian people who migrated originally from Southeast Asia and Oceania through Maritime Southeast Asia.[8][9] Culturally and linguistically, the Balinese are closely related to the people of the Indonesian archipelago, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Oceania.[9] Stone tools dating from this time have been found near the village of Cekik in the island's west.[10][11]
In ancient Bali, nine Hindu sects existed, namely Pasupata, Bhairawa, Siwa Shidanta, Waisnawa, Bodha, Brahma, Resi, Sora and Ganapatya. Each sect revered a specific deity as its personal Godhead.[12]
Inscriptions from 896 and 911 don't mention a king, until 914, when Sri Kesarivarma is mentioned. They also reveal an independent Bali, with a distinct dialect, where Buddhism and Sivaism were practiced simultaneously. Mpu Sindok's great granddaughter, Mahendradatta (Gunapriyadharmapatni), married the Bali king Udayana Warmadewa (Dharmodayanavarmadeva) around 989, giving birth to Airlangga around 1001. This marriage also brought more Hinduism and Javanese culture to Bali. Princess Sakalendukirana appeared in 1098. Suradhipa reigned from 1115 to 1119, and Jayasakti from 1146 until 1150. Jayapangus appears on inscriptions between 1178 and 1181, while Adikuntiketana and his son Paramesvara in 1204

Bali Kintamani Village is 1500 meters high, the village of Kintamani his a cool, damp climate suited to growing oranges and passion fruit and on market day, which falls every third day, the main street becomes a bustling chaos of vendors, some of whom have traveled from far away, carrying their wares on horseback.
Kintamani is the object of mountain tourism is very unique and stunning, with cool air condition in the daytime and cold at night. Tourism Object is located in the area is located in the village of Batur Batur, Kintamani District Level II Regional District Bangli. As for the route object, Object linking tourism with the Tourism Regions Tourism Batur and Besakih Tampaksiring.
To reach these locations can be taken through the journey overland from Denpasar for 2 hours, exactly to the place called Penelokan. In accordance with its name in Balinese, Penelokan means most strategic place to see the sights of nature in this tourist location. Located in the region Penelokan Kedisan village, one village in Kintamani District.
We can watch stunning natural scenery of Penelokan, a combination of Mount Batur and the expanse of black rock with Lake Batur and on a blue caldera. According to the tourists often called the world's most beautiful caldera. Village Terunyan, we can see the ancient civilizations of Bali Bali aga. In this village, the people who have died simply placed under a tree. The corpses are not completely remove the smell.
One of Bali’s most famous village, Kintamani, is located on the scenic regency of Bangli.
The fresh air from the mountain combined with dizzy view is best enjoyed by cycling around the village or trekking.
The dramatic landscape of the village centers around the volcanic caldera of ancient Mount Batur having deep crater lake, Bali’s largest, and bubbling hot springs.
The village is also home to several temples. One of which is Pura Ulun Danu Batur by the rim of the crater which completes the already breathtaking natural view of Kintamani village.
When tourism started to develop in Bali around 1965 one tour package called Barong dance and Kintamani tour was the most popular day sightseeing. The highlight of the tour which is until now still exist are Bali artist's colonies, Tirta Empul Temple, and Batur Caldera. According to some senior tour guides who have been working in the industry for more than 2 decades some tourists from Europe and U.S.A regularly come to Bali, for more than 5 times since 1960s and every times they come they always repeat to see this tour package. It might be the real spirit of Balinese nature and culture are mixed here which can give various inspirations, probably from business of small handicrafts until 5 stars hotels or restaurants for those who saw this as an opportunity. This has been proved by the tremendous development of tourism facilities in Bali from 1980s to 1995. The writer believe very much that what is the value of this trip has been triggering other area of Bali to be known in tourism industry. Below is described shortly how these 3 areas had been attracting people from immemorial times.

TRUNYAN BALI: A SHOCKING CEMETERY IN INDONESIA
Trunyan Village Cemetery in Bali was a challenging experience for me. We rarely see dead bodies in the western world, and we have a very finite view on death. Trunyan village is located deep in the centre of Bali, nestled beside a crater lake and mount Batur, and is quite hard to get to.
Here, they still follow a tradition that was set in place over a thousand years ago. They place their dead under a Terumanyan Tree, supposedly the last of it's kind, to mask it's beautiful scent.
The legend says that the smell of the tree was so sweet, that people from all over the island would come to try and find its source. The village of Trunyan was overrun with travellers. A man arrived and met a woman, he wanted to marry her. She insisted that before they were to be wed, the man has to find a way to stop the smell of the tree. The man found a very unique way to do so, and so began the tradition of placing dead bodies under the tree.
Now, we can visit the cemetery and see death face to face. There are 11 exposed graves beside the famous tree. The people living here are the descendants of the original Balinse people called Aga, and both the village and the tree derive their name from their language. Taru meaning 'tree' and Menyan meaning 'nice smell'.
There are a lot of poor reviews of this place. The locals are having a hard time appropriately managing the travellers that arrive. It's also quite small, and depending if anyone has died recently, there may or may not be a decomposing body. I have Yansu's contact below. I highly recommend you contact him.
