This isn't a showcase performance by any stretch but it always brings a smile to my face for the entire viewing, so I've uploaded it anyway.
The mostly inaudible stage banter and exchanges of smiles at the beginning of this impromptu recording is partly due my advice to Lloyd as we arrived at the venue, which was it is not a great idea to argue about anything while in front of an audience. Of course then I become slightly concerned when Lloyd suggests we had the capo on the 6th fret when we gave the song a brief practice earlier. I'm almost certain is was the 5th fret and I won't be able to sing the harmony if it's half a tone higher . . . and so I mention this . . . but can't take it any further and the capo stays on the 6th fret for this performance . . . and you can hear the result.
Byron One is a song that allows a sense of spirit whalers felt in the 1950s while whaling in Byron Bay, out of Ballina, NSW, Australia. Unless you are Japanese, whaling is not looked upon as being acceptable these days, so this song demonstrates that the idea of singing folk songs is to open the window into an era rather than promote a concept.
I dropped into Ballina tourist information center a few years back and asked about where the whalers used to tie up and was told they didn't, or at least the person on the counter knew nothing about it. So then I went to the Ballina Library and was told the same thing. I looked through various books in the library and although I found some other interesting stuff, nothing about whaling in Byron Bay or whaling boats putting in at Ballina. The head librarian however said perhaps the Maritime Museum, behind the library, on the wharf, might know something about it. So I went there next and they also knew nought about whaling out of Ballina in Byron Bay, although it must be understood the Maritime Museum is exclusively concerned with the Royal Navy, ships with a HMAS prefix (Her Majesty's Australian Ship). Therefore it is folksong, upon which we must rely, for the primary source of whaling history around Ballina and Byron Bay, at least on this occasion.
A couple of decade prior to this I met Harry Robertson, the author of the song, and alas all we discussed, as we made our way along Darling St Balmain (Sydney) toward an Hotel, was the lack of existence and therefore authenticity of lagerphones in Australian bush culture. However, despite the focus of the subject matter in our conversation, it was enough to bring me to the concrete conclusion that if Harry wrote in his song they whaled in Byron Bay and tied up in Ballina, that is exactly what they did.
One can still see whales, including humpbacks, from the shore at Byron Bay and one can assume they could in 1956 and were trying to catch them. There is every reason to ask 'if so, why wouldn't they have tied up at the wharf in Ballina?'
Lachlan Grant has sourced a well written article (see below) describing a whaling history in Byron where two converted naval patrol boats, named Byron I and Byron II, worked out of Ballina between 1954 and 1962.
