This boa constrictor, illegally dumped at the Ballona Freshwater Marsh by it's owner, was safely captured thanks to the help of some great people. Dumping animals is illegal and cruel! Read more about the incident on our blog:

This area has some interesting history. During the Pre-Columbian era, Tongva people existed as hunters and gatherers in small villages throughout the Ballona Creek watershed and other parts of the Los Angeles basin. Native American culture faded with the arrival of Spanish explorers.
Currently this whole area is protected under the Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reserve.

Fly-Over of Marina Del Rey, CA and Ballona Wetlands in Playa Del Rey, CA to help the California Coastal Commission, elected officials, agencies and concerned citizens understand the current status of development, open space and recreational opportunities on this 2000 acres of public land. It should be noted that Marina del Rey, CA was created by U.S.Congress and signed into law by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1954 to provide a small boat harbor and meet water related recreational needs of 2 million LA County residents.
Today, there are 10 million County residents. The County of LA has leased much of this public land for large housing developments and hotels. Currently, Fishermans Village on Fiji Way has a proposal for a large hotel and commercial development. Parcel 44 on Admiralty Way has a proposal for a Trader Joe's, West Marine and more. Parking lots that were promised for parks are now being considered for Commercial and Hotel Development. LA County puts lease revenue into the County General Fund. Ballona Creek rages through Culver City as storm soaks SoCal
As a powerful storm system soaked Southern California Saturday, water raged through a swollen Ballona Creek.
Eyewitness video shot near Syd Kronenthal Park in Culver City showed the storm runoff as it passed through the creek, an 8.8-mile flood channel that drains into the Santa Monica Bay. Its 130-square-mile watershed includes portions of Beverly Hills, Culver City, Inglewood, Los Angeles, Santa Monica and West Hollywood, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works.

This video depicts a runoff event generated by a storm system passing through southern California, precipitaton from which began falling on the night of 17 January, continuing on into the morning and early afternoon of the 18 January 2010. The footage in this video depicts the area both before and after the storm.
This concrete channel was once a natural-bed creek, which, like most southern California stream channels, was covered in concrete sometime in the early to mid twentieth century. Southern California's natural streams were covered in concrete because of damaging floods and debris flows associated with high-magnitude storms which occurred in 1914 and 1938.
A down side to such engineering is the loss of groundwater recharge as most water is funneled into the stream channels as runoff. Urbanization also inhibits groundwater recharge through the loss of infiltration capacity at the surface, a function of ever-increasing hardscaping (roads; other concrete surfaces, etc). With the general persistent drought pattern present in the southwestern United States for the past decade or so, one can only look at this runoff and say What a shame to waste all of that water!
