The BEST Food & Beer in PORTLAND, Maine
We spent a day in Portland, Maine making our way to restaurants, bars and craft breweries to find the best that the city has to offer!
With its heady mixture of artistic and outdoor adventures, our region is stylish and sophisticated, yet remains genuine and unpretentious, a place where grey flannel and plaid flannel coexist companionably. And underlying the latest tech, fashion, and culinary scene is a deep sense of continuity. We invite you to experience the character of a region that blends the present with a very special past.

Rising Tide Beer Company:
Rising Tide Brewing Company is a family-owned craft brewery located in Portland, Maine. We specialize in artisanal, hand-crafted ales brewed in small batches. Our beers are available in cans and on draft in our tasting room in Portland's East Bayside neighborhood and at select locations in Maine, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire.
Liquid Riot:
The Liquid Riot Bottling Company was established on the waterfront in Portland’s Old Port, just blocks from City Hall and the location of the Portland Rum Riot, in homage to those that fought for their beverage of choice. As Maine’s first Brewery/Distillery/Resto-Bar, we take all the passion and energy of these past riots and put it into our own liquids, bottled or on tap, made fresh locally for your enjoyment.
Central Provisions:
The name Central Provisions pays homage to the original name of Dana Street and the first use of the building. Daniel Fox, who worked for the East India Trading Company, constructed a building to be used as a storehouse for provisions. This federal style brick building was erected on the corner of Fore and Central Street (now Dana Street) directly on the Wharf. The East India Trading Company’s ships would sail directly up to the building and unload their goods such as cotton, silk, indigo dye, salt, saltpeter, tea, and opium. In 1874, the East India Trade Company was dissolved. Throughout history, 414 Fore Street has served many different purposes. A wine and bitters shop named Rufus and Son’s moved into the building in 1894. They moved across the street and a barrel top and burlap bags shop moved in. After that, it was home to E. Cory who sold local blacksmiths and wood workers tools and materials.
Blue Rooster:
Hip counter serve offering creative, elevated spins on hot dogs, sandwiches & tater tots. Great food, great value; friendly, helpful staff. Best hotdogs, falafel. All good.
Taco Escobar:
Authentic Mexican cuisine, craft beer, and exciting specialty cocktails! A fun atmosphere, casual and affordable. Taco Escovar is located in 548 Congress Street.

Interview with Steve DiMillo.mp4
The United States benefits from a state-based regulatory system for alcohol that was created by Congress more than 75 years ago. The 21st Amendment grants individual states the primary authority to regulate alcohol within their borders. This system keeps the business of beer and wine distribution local. To hear more about the local impact of the state-based system, Steve DiMillo, manager at DiMillo's Floating Restaurant shared the importance of Maine local distributors.
Food Fun for a New England Vacation
Food is a highlight of any New England vacation! The region's famous seafood ranges from succulent lobster - harvested all along the coast - to clams, the vital ingredient of New England's very own clam chowder or fried up crispy for a signature summer treat. There's nothing quite like hot pancakes with real locally-produced Vermont maple syrup, or the first apple cider of autumn. Head to Maine for its wild blueberries or see the cranberry harvest in Massachusetts. In the mountains of New Hampshire, stop for cold cider and enjoy the view. You'll find fresh organic produce from family farms featured at restaurants throughout the region and artisan cheeses and breads abound. To drink, what else but award-winning beers from a New England craft brewery or award-winning wines from New England's vineyards. Start planning your New England vacation today! The Haunted Kennebunk Inn (June, 2013)
The Haunted Kennebunk Inn
When planning our Maine vacation, I wanted a central location near or in the town of Kennebunk for the second week of our trip. The Kennebunk Inn seemed to meet our needs. I made reservations for 6 nights. This hotel was built in 1799. It wasn't until I looked further on the internet that I found out this hotel is haunted. To us it just made the hotel even more interesting. To our disappointment there were no ghostly appearances during our stay there. On our next to last day the weather forecast called for 100% rain the entire next day. So after lunch I went to Diane at the front desk and told her we would be leaving one day early. She prepared our bill that evening because we planned to leave early the next morning. I told her that I had read that the hotel is haunted. She said that she hadn't personally experienced any unusual happenings, but others have witnessed a few. I told her we were disappointed that nothing unusual happened during our visit. Her comment was Well, you do have one more night. However, nothing happened that last night. Or did it?
The cabinet in our room had 4 drawers which slid open all by themselves periodically after we used them. I had assumed that it was due to the very noticeable slant in the floor which isn't uncommon in very old houses. Surely the drawers would open if we failed to close them completely. On the morning of our departure I started packing the car in the midst of an intermittent drizzle. On my way back and forth to the car I noticed a broken glass on the sidewalk under one of our windows. I left a note at the front desk about the broken glass. Someone returning from a night out had too much to drink and dropped the glass. After leaving the keys at the front desk, we drove off, and that was that. Or was it?
Once we were home I again looked up the websites that discussed the haunted background of the Kennebunk Inn. Here is what I found:
(1) Wine glasses and goblets -- in one incident, a waiter was carrying a tray of wine glasses, when one of the wine glasses rose off the tray, and crashed to the floor, like someone had deliberately thrown it.
(2) Goblets behind the bar have been known to move and actually fly across the room by themselves.
(3) Cyrus, a long deceased desk clerk, suspected of being one of the spirits haunting this hotel used to have his desk in the room that was directly above the unfinished staircase that went from the cellar to the ceiling.
We saw deliveries being made at the rear of the building at the entrance to what seemed to be the cellar. Our room was on the first floor just above this cellar. The broken glass on the sidewalk was just underneath one of our windows. Eleanor's hearing isn't good. But mine is. I heard nothing during the night. However, the window air conditioner could have drowned out the sound. The slanted floor in our room is the logical explanation for the pesky opening-on-their-own drawers. So logically nothing unusual happened during the 5 nights we stayed at the Kennebunk Inn. Or did it?

It is now a beautiful seaside village with most of the old whaling leaders' residences still basing on Main Street. Forbes Magazine stated recently Greenport is maybe Greenport's most attractive place-- charming summer season homes push up against old-school seafood shacks and expensive restaurants, (the inventive fish and shellfish choices at The Frisky Oyster never ever lets down), with coastline and boating options never more than ten mins away.
