GET SMARTER SECTION:
A quick clarification....
It took me 8 months to learn how to do this, but I was only picking up the bike and running to the end of the driveway and back every day. I wasn't ACTIVELY trying to learn. Meaning... I wasn't struggling and trying to make my brain learn. I simply got on the bike every day, tried to operate it to the end of the driveway, turned around and tried to operate it back. The goal was to understand how my brain figured things out on its own, without trying to force it to. Many people have built bikes like this and figured it out in much less than 1 day by staying on the bike until they were able to master it. I had no timelines, and was using this as an exploratory activity to learn how I learn.
Do not misinterpret this to mean that I struggled and tried very hard every day for 8 months. That's simply not true.

Living on a 4 Season Houseboat - Beautiful Floating Tiny House!
In this video, we meet Bonnie from Wakefield, Québec, Canada who is living on a gorgeous tiny house boat that is full of character and charm. The River Den (or La Tannière) has custom-made asymmetrical windows, a classic ship's wheel, antique fireplace, and hand-built furniture — all of which give the boat a warm and cozy feel that makes you feel at home as soon as you step on board. The boat is docked on the shore of the Gatineau River and Bonnie lives in it as often as she can when she's not renting it out on Airbnb (
The tiny houseboat was designed by Bonnie and her boatbuilding friend, Denis Tremblay, who is known locally as the Wakefield Pirate. Denis and a few of his friends built the boat by hand, including the aluminum frame and the custom windows, the cabinets, and the grill floor in the loft.
The boat is built on 5 pontoons that are designed to provide flotation while still taking on some water to keep the boat weighed down in the water for stability. The pontoons are also designed to freeze in the ice and are made by a local company called Les Quais Navigables (
It's a 4-season house boat that is fully insulated and has an antique wood burning fireplace to provide heat in winter. For power, they installed a deep cycle marine battery that provides 12-Volt power for the lights, bilge pump, and navigation lights. They have a Separett composting toilet from Sweden ( and a sink that pumps water from the river for washing dishes. For refrigeration, Bonnie uses a cooler with ice, but she might invest in some solar panels so that she can power a proper fridge eventually.
The main floor has a kitchen, toilet, dining room and living room, and upstairs there is cozy a sleeping loft with a grill floor that allows heat to rise through the floor, and sun & dust to travel down to the main level. One of the windows in the loft opens up onto a gorgeous rooftop patio with a cedar deck and has space for some solar panels if/when Bonnie decides she needs them.
The boat has a gas motor and can be taken out on the river which is quite impressive considering it's size! To make sure the boat was still road worthy, they built a wedge roof over the loft that can be taken apart if Bonnie wants to transport it to a different location. The boat is currently docked in the quaint little town of Wakefield, Québec where there are cute cafes, restaurants and shops right across the street.
If anyone is interested in renting this house boat, check it out on the Airbnb website here:

With opening arguments wrapped up in President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial, the next phase begins. For the next two days, senators get to ask questions of both legal teams. The Holt Lecture with - Dana Perino
The USC Bedrosian Center is excited to welcome Ms. Perino for its Holt Distinguished Lecture Series. Dana Perino served as the 27th White House Press Secretary from September 2007 to January 2009, under President George W. Bush, becoming the first Republican woman to hold the position.
The Holt Distinguished Lecture series, established by long-time Price School Board of Councilors member Dennis Holt and his wife Brooks, is intended to bring in speakers that are leaders in their field to talk about issues regarding communication and public policy. In the last couple of years we have been lucky to feature wonderful speakers such as Robert Caro, Nate Silver and LeVar Burton.
After leaving the White House, Perino has had an active career in the media, serving regularly as a political commentator for Fox News, and more recently becoming a co-host of Fox’s talk show The Five. Last April she also released a New York Times Bestselling book titled And the Good News Is … Lessons and Advice from the Bright Side, in which she reflects on her life experiences, including her terms as Deputy Press Secretary and Press Secretary at the White House.
In this new book, Perino mentions Peggy Noonan’s memoir What I saw at the Revolution (1990) and how influential it was in her professional life and in validating her political views. Noonan worked as a speechwriter for President Reagan and her book chronicles her experiences working in a White House that was very predominantly male and in a time of great changes. In preparation for Dana Perino’s visit we will be discussing Peggy Noonan’s book in this month’s Bedrosian Book Club Podcast (which will be published on our website on October 28th).
We look forward to hearing Ms. Perino talk about communication and public policy from her unique perspective, having been so closely involved both in the government and the media side of politics at a national level. It will be interesting to hear about what it is like to be in the public eye discussing politics, and to get a sense of how it has been for her to be involved in a field that is still predominantly male today.

P2P Workshop: Appropriate Use of Drug Therapies for Osteoporotic Fracture Prevention - Day 1
More than 10 million people in the United States have osteoporosis, a skeletal disorder that causes bones to become weak and fragile as a result of low bone mass. The condition makes people more susceptible to fractures, which can impair their ability to live independently and even threaten their lives. The social and economic burden of osteoporotic fractures is substantial. Reducing osteoporosis prevalence and hip fracture incidence are among the major objectives of Healthy People 2020, the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services’ national health promotion and disease prevention initiative.
Lifestyle changes—including getting adequate nutrition and regular exercise, quitting tobacco use, limiting alcohol use, and preventing falls—can help reduce a person’s risk of osteoporotic fractures. However, medications may be prescribed to prevent fractures if a person has very low bone mineral density or has experienced a prior fragility fracture.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved several types of drugs to prevent osteoporotic fractures. Clinical guidelines by various medical organizations recommend bisphosphonates (BPs) as a first line of treatment for most people who have osteoporosis. BPs are effective for short-term use (up to 3–5 years) by people who are at high risk of fracture. However, the benefits and risks of longer-term treatment are less clear. Reports of rare but serious adverse events such as atypical femoral fractures and osteonecrosis (death of cells) of the jaw have raised questions about the safety of osteoporosis drug use, especially in people who use the drugs for more than 3–5 years or who had a low risk of fracture when they began treatment.
Research Challenges
There is a gap in scientific data about the appropriate long-term use of many osteoporosis drugs. There are uncertainties about which people will benefit or may be harmed if they take the drugs long-term. Public concern about these and other unanswered questions has coincided with a significant decrease in use of osteoporosis drugs and a leveling off in what had been a promising decline in the incidence of osteoporotic fractures. These changes have raised concerns within medical and professional communities that many people who might need the drugs are not being prescribed them, and those who are prescribed them are not taking them.
In addition, evidence is limited regarding the initiation and length of “drug holidays” (a medical practice in which a patient stops taking medications for a period of time and then resumes treatment again, if the patient or their doctor believes it could be in their best interests), whether stopping treatment reduces the risk of serious adverse events while maintaining fracture prevention benefit, and which individuals should change treatments instead of simply taking a drug holiday from their current medication.
Innovative research strategies are needed to address these knowledge gaps and to help better inform individuals and physicians in their decision-making about osteoporosis treatment.
Workshop Goals
This P2P workshop will assess the available scientific evidence to better understand the appropriate use of drugs for osteoporotic fracture prevention, specifically addressing the following questions:
What are the benefits and risks (including major adverse events) of osteoporotic drugs with short-term use (from first-use up to 3–5 years of treatment)? What factors influence outcomes? What are the benefits and risks of osteoporotic drugs over the longer term (for treatment periods longer than 3–5 years)? What factors influence outcomes? Do drug holidays improve outcomes? What patient and clinician factors impact the use of and adherence to osteoporotic drugs?

If God Is Willing and da Creek Don't Rise is a 2010 documentary film directed by Spike Lee, as a follow-up to his 2006 HBO documentary film, When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts. The film looks into the proceeding years since Hurricane Katrina struck the New Orleans and Gulf Coast region, and also focuses on the 2010 BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and its effect on the men and women who work along the shores of the gulf. Many of the participants in Levees were also featured in this documentary.
It won a Peabody Award in 2010 for ambitiously chronicling one of the hugest disasters in American history, interrogating the well-known narratives and investigating other stories that could have easily fallen through the cracks.[1]
