History
There are two legends that surround the history of Barcelona; one attributes the founding of the city to the mythological Hercules, 400 years before Rome. The second attributes the founding of the city in the 3rd century BC to the Carthaginian ruler Hamilcar Barca, the father of Hannibal.
The Romans took the town over as a military camp, but at the time the city was eclipsed by its neighbour Tarragona. There are some important Roman ruins that were exposed a few years ago under the Placa del Rei (Kings Plaza).
The city was then invaded and occupied by the Moors and later conquered by the Counts of Barcelona.
During the Franco years the region of Catalonia was extremely suppressed with the Catalan language and Catalonian institutions abolished.
The City
Barcelona is a dynamic, open Mediterranean city. It's the perfect city to relax, stroll around and enjoy its unique way of life.
Barcelona offers so much to the cultural visitor, there is so much to see, something new and interesting awaits around every corner: Gothic architecture, the famous Las Ramblas avenue, Gaudi's Güel Parc and the unfinished La Sagrada
Cathedral, the old Raval quarter, La Ribera and La Barceloneta, a beachside ravel of corridor style streets where you can find some fantastic local
restaurants and bars, away from the typical tourist area.
Getting around Barcelona is easy. You can pretty much walk around the whole city. They also have a daily rent-a-bike system and the Metro is very good and simple to use.

Barcelona, the capital of the province of Catalonia of Spain, is located at the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, not far from the French border. For clear reason, Barcelona is one of the most visited cities in Europe. Barcelona offers a large and varied entertainment program (besides the famous FC Barcelona). This include the famous La Rambla, the colorful market hall Mercat de la Boqueria, the incredibly diverse city center with its many streets and shops, the Cathedral, the many buildings and parks created by Antoni Gaudí, including the Sagrada Familia and the Parc Guell. TRAVEL SPAIN WITH IREM OZEL | BARCELONA TRAVEL GUIDE 2019 | CATALONIA | Episode: 01 | Irem Ozel
Hello Everyone, hope you enjoy my weekly Vlogs.
Inspiring video's about Life style, and Travelling.
Catalonia Square, sometimes referred to as Plaza de Cataluña, is a large square in central Barcelona that is generally considered to be both its city centre and the place where the old city and the 19th century-built Eixample meet. It is especially known for its fountains and statues, its proximity to some of Barcelona's most popular attractions, and the flocks of pigeons that gather in the centre. It is connected by the famous La Rambla street, the most famous touristic street for restaurants and eateries. It stretches for 1.2 kilometres connecting Plaça de Catalunya in the centre with the Christopher Columbus Monument at Port Vell. We booked our hotel at this famous lively street La Rambla, that is super crowded during tourist season.

Barcelona Spain | Travel
Barcelona is one of the world's leading tourist, economic, trade fair and cultural centres, and its influence in commerce, education, entertainment, sports, media, fashion, science, and the arts all contribute to its status as one of the world's major global cities. It is a major cultural and economic centre in southwestern Europe. The Barri Gòtic (Catalan for Gothic Quarter) is the centre of the old city of Barcelona. Especially remarkable is the work of architect Antoni Gaudí, which can be seen throughout the city. His best-known work is the immense but still unfinished church of the Sagrada Família, which has been under construction since 1882 and is still financed by private donations.

The legend attributed the Carthaginians to the founding of Barcino, especially to Hamilcar Barca, the father of Hannibal.
Later, the Romans turned the city into a castrum (a Roman military base) centered on Mons Taber, a small hill near the location of today's town hall (Plaça de Sant Jaume).
This organization is still visible today on the map of the historical center through the remaining fragments of the Roman walls.
Major Roman remains are exposed beneath Plaça del Rei, the entrance to the city's museum, the Museu d'Història de la Ciutat.
The fortress was conquered by the Visigoths in the 5th century by the Moors in the 8th century, recaptured in 801 by the Frankish kings and robbed by Al-Mansur in 985.
Barcelona Spain became a French county, which slowly conquered its independence and expanded until it annexed the Principality of Catalonia, the Kingdom of Aragon and other possessions across the sea, thus leading the Mediterranean Sea from Barcelona to Athens .
When the Catalonia-Aragon Confederation was dynamically annexed to Castile, the decay of Barcelona began.
The city was devastated after the Catalonian Republic from 1640 to 1652 and the Spanish Succession War of 1714. At the beginning of the twentieth century, Barcelona became a cultural and political center after a revival of the Catalan culture.
Barcelona offers a unique opportunity for tourists to walk from the Roman remains to the medieval fortress and to the modern city with its open boulevards and all the intersections left wide by the corners of the uniquely cut buildings.
The historical center of the city is almost flat, while the modern city stretches to the surrounding hills, with high-rise streets that remind San Francisco.
A notable feature is Les Rambles, a series of boulevards that leave the city center toward the water front, full of people until late at night, with florists, bird vendors, street artists, cafes and restaurants. Going up or down Les Rambles you can see the prestigious El Liceu, the La Boqueria food market and Plaça Reial Square with its arches and palm trees among other interesting buildings.
The Rambla ends in the old port, where a statue of Christopher Columbus points to the sea. Nearby is the Maritime Museum which presents the history of Mediterranean life. The building of the museum is the former shipyard where the vessels that sailed the Mediterranean were built. The old port offers various splendors, including the largest Mediterranean Aquarium.
Remarkable is the legacy of the city from the architect Antoni Gaudí, who lived and worked in Barcelona and who left famous works such as Palau Güell, Parc Güell and the immense but still unfinished Sagrada Família church, which is under construction since 1882, being financed Of public money like the cathedrals of the Middle Ages. It is expected to be completed
There is also a museum containing less known works of Pablo Picasso in his youth. For those interested in art, the National Art Museum of Catalonia deserves to be visited.
It contains paintings on the walls of the churches and Romanesque chapels in Catalonia, which were transferred to the museum.
Also, another museum worth seeing is the Museum of Contemporary Art, not only for its paintings and sculptures, but also for its architecture, the building being designed by the American architect Richard Meier.
In the modern districts of the city, there are several boulevards on which stores of international clothing, jewelery, leather goods and others are located.
The most elegant boulevard is Passeig de Gràcia, where there are two buildings of Antoni Gaudí, Casa Milà and Casa Batlló.
For spectacular views of the city and the coastline there are two hills. One, Montjuïc Hill, is next to the harbor. On top of it there is an old fortress that has long been watching the entrance to the port.
Barcelona city tour highlights including La Sagrada Familia Church, Barcelona Cathedral, Olympic Park, Spanish Village and Placa de Sant Jaume where the City Hall is. Join me and enjoy the best sights on a typical city tour of this popular city

Barcelona City Guide: Plaça de Catalunya - Travel & Discover
After the medieval city walls were demolished in the 19th century, ambitious designs for the city's public spaces were conceived under the guidance of notable urban planners. Plaça Catalunya was conceived as part of pla Rovira in 1859, but no official permission from the government was given until the 1888 Universal Exposition. It was urbanised for the first time in 1902 and was further modified in 1929, on the occasion of the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition, which also included the construction of a metro station.
