Upon my first visit to Barcelona we decided to celebrate our mom's birthday so the whole family came down. We stayed at Placa Reial on the famous La Rambla pedestrian street downtown Barcelona.
The most important advise I can give you about Barcelona; it is a very busy and boiling hot city in the summer, so you may want to consider visiting Barcelona in fall when the weather is a bit cooler.
My favorite places included the Barri Gothic known for its classical Gothic architecture, the massive Olympic park from the 1992 summer Olympics, the largest public market in Catalonia called Mercado de la Boqueria and the delicious dishes at Bo de B.

This video is being shared to make people aware of the scams, and know how to avoid them. Another reason for uploading this video is to make the law makers in Spain know how serious the issue is, and hopefully change the ridiculous law that protects pickpockets that stills less than €400. A pickpocket in Spain can only be detained if caught stealing more than €400 or have many repeat offences. If they are caught with less than € 400 they will only receive a fine and leave, and will be free to rob tourists again. At the moment, the only solution for the tourists is to protect themselves from the thieves using a few techniques explained in this video.

The city of Barcelona is the cultural tourist's dream. We've all heard of Sagrada Familia and the Gothic Quarter but in this video we're showing you a few of the city's secrets that are right.under.your.nose. Enjoy!
From Gaudí's stunning works of Catalan Modernism architecture and Joan Miró's pavement mosaic to a collection of cute and cool arthouse cafes and pricey but magical vintage shops, it's not difficult to see why over 7.5 million people visit the city every year.
It's steeped in Catalan history, nationalism and pride and, to top it all off, Catalonia (the province Barcelona sits within) is the only area that has banned bullfighting in the whole of mainland Spain. This is good. We like bulls :)

This is a video about the Hidden Gems of Barcelona. Things that are off the beaten track but well-worth making time for.
Coming up:
Vintage shopping, a flock of geese. We’re talking about a maze and a market, and some public artwork.
El Born district in Barcelona is where you can find not on the high street-style shopping. You’ll see some designer names but they’re going to be the vintage kind. It’s a bunch of vintage shops and little boutiques.
Next is Barcelona Cathedral; more importantly, the cloister in the cathedral. The cathedral itself is this vast Gothic building within the Gothic quarter of Barcelona. It’s free to get in and in the cloister you’re going to find 13 white geese…of course. The 13 geese symbolise the age at which the patron saint of the cathedral, Eulalia, was cruelly tortured and murdered by the Romans. Poor girl… - Yeah, that’s a thing! - And you can also spend €3 to get to the top of the cathedral and right there you’ll see the Gothic architecture up close and personal, as well as some really nice views across the whole city. - Yeah, it’s stunning.
Thirdly, La Boqueria market, which is a vibrant mix of colours, stinky fish, gruesome-looking cuts of meat and even some locals too! - It’s a really good spot to go and practise your bartering skills, if that’s the sort of thing you’re in to. Or just to go and find a nice healthy fruit drink to get you through the day, or what I would probably recommend is pulling up a stool at one of the bars that they have there, because there’s a couple, and you can just observe and watch this crazy Catalan culture mixing with all the tourists and just see it all unravel before you. It’s a very cool scene for that.
If you’re more of a low-key person, Parc del Laberint d’Horta is really hard to say but it’s also really beautiful. It’s basically a labyrinth in a park. It’s cool. - Yeah, yes it is. - I really recommend going there if you just want something that’s a bit serene. It’s really nice and very very green, which is nice to have in the middle of a city.
Our fifth and final gem is pretty hard to miss if you’re on a certain part of Barcelona beach anyway. Yep, and that is Rebecca Horn’s artwork on Barceloneta beach. The beach itself now is really really beautiful. It’s kind of hard to believe that it used to be run down, prior to the 1992 Olympics. Before this time, it was little more than a shanty town and its industrialisation and slum-like dwellings used to house fishermen. It was basically a fishing village that vastly out-grew itself and meant that living conditions were little more than squalid. Yeah, but luckily there is a happy ending to this story. A lot of money was pumped in to the city through the Olympics and they used this to move these inhabitants into real, proper apartments closer to the city centre. And locals refer to this artwork as, quite quaintly, The Cubes. Hmm. - Like little sugar lumps. - That’s very pleasant.

Barcelona Spain -- should I speak Spanish or Catalan? Neither
Should you speak Spanish or Catalan in Barcelona? Speaking English to locals gets the best reaction. I tell you why.
Barcelona is a truly bi-lingual language. Think Miami or Montreal. Everyone who grows up in Barcelona speaks the two languages fluently, Spanish and Catalan.
They have strong feelings for Catalan. They also know that Spanish is one of the most spoken languages in the world.
From my experience, the best language to speak in Barcelona is English. The reason is a little complex. I think it has to with the way the local person feels. Speaking English suggests that you think that person is educated and worldly. It means you see that person in an international light. They feel valued and intelligent. I swear it works.
Also, anyone who works in the tourist industry speaks a good level of English or is under pressure to speak a good level of English. They all need to practice their English. I have trouble sometimes escaping English. So, speak English here in Barcelona and feel comfortable about it.
That said, it’s always nice to know a few local words when you are in a new place. It’s nice to acknowledge the language(s). If you are from North America, you probably already know some Spanish.
Here are a few tips about how to use Catalan and Spanish.
In Catalan, Barcelona people don’t say “gracia” or “moltes gracias” as much. They use the French expression for thank you. “Merci” Try it.
In Spanish, an easy way to have fun and agree with people is to say these three words: “Vale, bueno, venga” Here is how to say them:
Vale = like the island Bali
Bueno = easy enough
Venga = the “v” is pronounced “b”
This means something like okay, well, fine. Just repeat it a lot. You sound native. With these 3 words, you can have an entire relationship.
Outside of Barcelona, things are a little different. There is much more of a tribal mentality. The hill towns and rural areas are very strong about speaking only Catalan. I think they all speak Spanish but they avoid it a lot. Outside of Barcelona in rural areas, you probably should avoid Spanish.
If you live or study here for any length of time, you should try to pick up the local languages. Most Barcelona people are extremely appreciative of any foreigner who speaks Catalan. It’s an easy way to win them over.

On Day 21 of our Round The World Trip for food with Star Alliance, we spent the day in Barcelona. Barcelona is an amazing food city, and one of the best places to start eating is at La Boqueria. After eating and wandering, we headed over to Sagrada Família for a breathtaking tour. It was an amazing day of food and attractions in Barcelona.
00:34 Breakfast at Cotton House Hotel - We started off the morning at our hotel by having a quick breakfast. The jamon and selection of cured meats was the highlight.
2:53 Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria - Often known in short just as La Boqueria, this historical market is a food lover's paradise and a pilgrimage destination. We arrived early in the morning and headed first to Bar Pinotxo to eat our second breakfast. I ordered an omelet with eggplant and a plate of garbanzo beans and blood sausage. The dish was simple, but it was incredibly delicious. Additionally, the coffee was extremely good. Total price - 12.80 EUR ($14.04)
6:59 El Quim De La Boqueria - After finishing with the first place of tapas, I wandered over to another legendary tapas bar within La Boqueria market known as El Quim De La Boqueria. It’s a very expensive place, but I knew I wanted to try the fried eggs with baby squid. The dish was a simple combination of ingredients, but it was cooked perfectly, and it was incredibly delicious. I also couldn’t resist a plate of fried chilies. Total price - 32.05 EUR ($35.16) There are dozens of things to eat and try at La Boqueria, and after all the salty food I was ready to have a passion fruit juice. And then finally, to conclude the Barcelona food tour of La Boqueria, I bought a cone of sliced Jamón Ibérico.
14:14 Gothic Quarter, Barcelona Cathedral - After an amazing food tour, we walked around the Christopher Columbus monument and then continued on walking around the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona. The Barcelona Cathedral was originally closed when we arrived, but I came back in a few minutes and walked around the Barcelona Cathedral as well.
16:37 Xarcutería La Pineda - Located just around the corner from the Barcelona Cathedral, I headed over to a place called Xarcutería La Pineda (recommended by Chris English), to try the botifarra blanca and a cup of vermouth. It’s an amazing little family run shop with a fantastic array of meats and drinks. Total price - 11.50 EUR
21:25 Basílica de la Sagrada Família - One of the most famous attractions in Barcelona is the Sagrada Familia, a basilica that was famous designed by Antoni Gaudi. I had read and dreamed about visiting for many years, so I was very excited to finally have the chance to visit. What amazed me is how dark and gothic it looks from the outside, yet how light and happy it is on the inside. Sagrada Familia is truly a stunning architectural feat, and an attraction you must visit in Barcelona. Along with visiting the main part of Sagrada Familia, I also bought tickets to go to the Nativity Tower. Going to the top of the tower and walking down was the highlight of visiting. Price - 29.00 EUR per person w/ tower entrance
26:16 Catalan Food for dinner at Restaurant Portolés - For dinner Ying and I walked over to Restaurant Portolés, a local Catalan food restaurant. Some of the main dishes I ordered included Fideuà and Rollitos De Pollo, all of which were delicious. It’s a great restaurant to try in Barcelona. Total price - 26.50 EUR
This was a fantastic day in Barcelona, packed with delicious food and attractions in Barcelona.

La Ribiera is a district of Barcelona. It was the economic center of the city between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries. The great merchants built in her great palaces, such as those still preserved in Montcada Street.
There are two very distinct sectors: the Ribera and Borne.
