Dusty Desert Trails - E2 - Exploring Barker Ranch
Staring Ed Czajka (My Dad)
This is a History Mini-Series covering the desert near Balarat, CA. So much history is overlooked in this area especially related to the 49'rs that escaped Death Valley through the area.
On this adventure, we tour the Barker Ranch where Charlie Manson was captured on October 12, 1969. We also explore the area around the ranch where the family had several bunkers to observe the area. We also show what the area looked like before it burned down in 2009.

Mengel Pass timelapse from Barker Ranch to Geologist Cabin Death Valley Ca Las Vegas off road
Mengel pass timelapse from west to east. Started in Barker Ranch the last hideout of Charles Manson, drove up Mengel Pass, past Russell's Cabin and stopped at Geologist Cabin.
Fun road, some technical areas had options to go an easier way, we chose the most difficult path because it was more fun. Overall the road is in great shape, technical sections are a little washed out with rocks 12-30 high. Stock vehicles will require some trail building to get over the obstacles.

first aired in 2001 with coverage of the beginning events in the Extreme Rock Crawling Championships. We still have lots of that classic footage that we will be putting up just to bring a tear to your eyes for the good old days.
tested many factory four wheel drive vehicles during our early days and you can see the tests we did all categorized on our website.
projected several amazing vehicles including Elsie, our beloved FJ60 that was my family cruiser and remains in the shop to this day - and until the day they plant me in the ground. We also restored and period projected a very nice FJ40 that ended up in the hands of a friend, Bottle-a-day Dave. Anyone ever run across Dave Yarington (a rabid cruiser enthusiast - okay 'nut') please have him contact me. We also projected a great old Cherokee named Scofield (named after my friend who bought it new and explored many backroads in it). That Cherokee also still remains in my family, now driven by my son-in-law and most likely soon to be my Grandson's daily driver. Proof that good machines never die.
also went on some incredible adventures, certainly our favorite thing to do. We traveled a lot of cool trails around southern California as well as the infamous (in the ATV world!) Piute Trail area and of course Moab. What we love most are the scenic trails! You can find them all listed on our website as well.
had a few trail tips (which I hope to do more of), abad product reviews on both items for your rig as well as to make your trail experience better.
Hope to see you out on the trail.

Barker Ranch: Death Valley, Video One
On the road to Death Valley to find Barker Ranch, the location where Charles Manson was apprehended by authorities after the Manson Family killing spree.
Goler Wash near Barker Ranch Death Valley N.P
Recorded on December 27, 2012 using a Flip Video camera. Coming back down Goler Wash road on the way down from the Barker Ranch aka The Manson hideout. Music playing is from the Manson recordings which I brought along for ambience.
CHARLES MANSON FAMILY / BARKER RANCH 2017
Barker Ranch update. The old girl is still standing. I thought for sure she would be a pile of rubble by now. Everyone is leaving her alone and letting nature take its course. The Bunkhouse will last for centuries unless some idiot burns it down like the fate that bestowed Barker. I usually edit down my films, but I let the camera run for this one. What you see is what I got including all the surrounding buildings and artefacts. Even the drive back through Goler Canyon at night. Enjoy.
Music: Art Of Destruction.

Road Trip to Barker Ranch: Manson's Last Hideout.
A road trip to Trona Pinnacles, Ballarat, and Barker Ranch on 3/29/08.
The Trona Pinnacles are located just south of the town of Trona. They are products of calcium carbonate that had bonded to algae in a prehistoric lake. As the lake evaporated the pinnacles formed. Because of their unique appearance the Trona Pinnacles have served as a backdrop for a number of sci-fi movies including Planet of the Apes, The Gate II, Lost in Space, and Star Trek V: The Final Frontier.
Ballarat is about 20-30 miles North of Trona. Ballarat is a ghost town that was occupied for only about 20 years. Only Rock Novak and his dog permanently reside there these days. Ballarat was victim to graffiti by the Manson Family as they passed through on their way to Barker Ranch. Charlie's power truck still resides in Ballarat along with it's stars painted on the inside of the roof courtesy of the family.
Barker Ranch is about 15-20 miles south of Ballarat nestled five miles into the Panamint Mountains. The only access is a dirt/rock road and to enter the mountains you must have a 4wd vehicle with a clearance of ~9 inches. Manson and the family were found in Barker Ranch shortly after their Tate / La Bianca killing spree. The police were actually looking for car thieves and were surprised to find a group of murderers. Manson was found hiding in the bathroom cabinet. While the cabinet is gone it's outline remains.
Music: Viens Avec Moi by Devotchka off their album How It Ends.

Goler Wash to Barker Ranch - March 1st 2017
Just a quick trip up Goler Wash to check out the infamous Barker Ranch back in March 2017. Vehicle is out 1979 Land Cruiser BJ40.
Goler Wash was a piece of cake and a 2WD vehicle could easily make it - we never even put it into 4WD. Definitely worth checking out. I wish I had done it before it burned down.
Barker Ranch and Mengel Pass
May 4 Mengel Pass trail run. A high clearance 4x4 is recommended but doable with a stock vehicle.
Goler Canyon Wash Trail Review and Guide in Near Death Valley California in 4K UHD
For the full trail guide please visit:
Goler Wash aka as Goler Canyon is the off-road cut through over the Panamint Mountain Range to Death Valley National Park near Trona California. It is more known for being the home of Barker Ranch aka Manson Ranch. Which the FBI raided the ranch in 1969 when they found out the Manson Family was living there. But don't think this is an easy 4x4 pass through. The trail is known to get washed out making it a go-to place for a mild offroad trail to wild overland adventures. Along the route expect beautiful scenery of the canyons that seem to tower above you while the old mines seem to have no way for anyone to ever access them. If the trail is washed out, expect an intermediate waterfall that is slick with running water on them. Today, the park service spends a lot of time maintaining this trail, trying to avoid allowing this one obstacle to show its head.
To spice things up, make this into a weekend overland adventure including off-roading Warm Springs Road, Butte Valley, Mengel Pass, and Goler Wash. This just might be the best 4wd Jeep Tails you have or will ever take and the dispersed camping is top notch.
The trails are Dog Friendly. In the video we had Joshua Noesser driving his 2001 Jeep Wrangler TJ. The other vehicles were a Toyota FJ Cruiser and a Toyota 4Runner with solid front axle.
The video was shot in 4k UHD and Narrated by Joshua Noesser.

Narrow canyon 1/2 mile west of Barker Ranch Goler Wash Rd Death Valley
Found a cool short and narrow well traveled canyon on the way to Barker Ranch from Ballarat off of Goler Wash Rd in Death Valley. I led the drive into the canyon in a Suburban as the Tacoma driver giggled and wondered how I fit, then I chased the Tacoma out of the canyon.
