La Catedral-Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar de Zaragoza es un importante templo barroco de España. Según la tradición, se trata del primer templo mariano de la Cristiandad, puesto que en él se conserva y venera el pilar —en realidad, una columna de jaspe— que fue puesto por la Virgen María quien, viviendo aún en Jerusalén, se habría aparecido en carne mortal al apóstol Santiago el día 2 de enero del año 40.

The Cathedral-Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar is a Roman Catholic church in the city of Zaragoza, Aragon, Spain. The Basilica venerates Blessed Virgin Mary, under her title Our Lady of the Pillar praised as Mother of the Hispanic Peoples by Pope John Paul II. It is reputed to be the first church dedicated to Mary in history. Local traditions take the history of this basilica to the dawn of Christianity in Spain attributing to an apparition to Saint James the Great, the apostle who is believed by tradition to have brought Christianity to the country. This is the only reported apparition of Mary to have occurred before her believed Assumption. Many of the kings of Spain, many other foreign rulers and saints have paid their devotion before this statue of Mary. Saint John of the Cross, Saint Teresa of Ávila, Saint Ignatius of Loyola, and Blessed William Joseph Chaminade are among the foremost ones. The Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar is one of two minor basilicas in the city of Zaragoza, and is co-cathedral of the city alongside the nearby La Seo Cathedral. The architecture is of Baroque style, and the present building was predominantly built between 1681 and 1872. The present spacious church in Baroque style was begun in 1681 by Charles II, King of Spain and completed in 1686. The early constructions were supervised by Felipe Sanchez and were later modified by Francisco Herrera the Younger under John of Austria the Younger. In 1725, the Cabildo of Zaragoza decided to change the aspect of the Holy Chapel and commissioned the architect Ventura Rodríguez, who transformed the building into its present dimensions of 130 meters long by 67 wide, with its eleven cupolas and four towers. The area most visited is the eastern part of the chapel, because this is where the Holy Chapel by Ventura Rodríguez (1754) is built, which houses the venerated image of the Virgin. Around the Holy Chapel are the vaults or domes painted with frescoes by Francisco Goya: The Queen of Martyrs and Adoration of the Name of God. By 1718 the church had been vaulted over. However, it was not until 1872 that the final touches were put to these vaults, when the main dome and the final spire were finished. During the Spanish Civil War of 1936–1939 three bombs were dropped on the church but none of them exploded. Two of them are still on show in the Basilica. Notable choirmasters include the Baroque composer Joseph Ruiz Samaniego. The statue is wooden and 39 cm tall and rests on a column of jasper. The tradition of the shrine of El Pilar, as given by Our Lady in an apparition to Sister Mary Agreda and written about in The Mystical City of God, is that Our Lady was carried on a cloud by the angels to Zaragoza during the night. While they were traveling, the angels built a pillar of marble, and a miniature image of Our Lady. Our Lady gave the message to St James and added that a church was to be built on the site where the apparition took place. The pillar and the image were to be part of the main altar. The image was crowned in 1905 with a crown designed by the Marquis of Griñi, and valued at 450,000 pesetas (£18,750, 1910).

The feast of Our Lady of the Pillar, celebrating the first apparition of Mary to Hispanic people, is on October 12. This coincides with the Día de la Hispanidad and the date of Columbus's discovery of the New World. Every nation of Hispanic colonial origin has donated national vestments for the fifteenth-century statue of the Virgin, which is housed in the chapel.

La Basílica Catedral de Nuestra Señora del Pilar de Zaragoza es el templo barroco más grande de España y, según la tradición, el primer templo dedicado a la Virgen María del mundo.
Según dicha tradición, el 2 de enero del año 40 d.C. María se presentó al apóstol Santiago (que estaba predicando -sin mucho éxito- en Hispania) a orillas del río Ebro, plantó allí una columna -el Pilar- y le pidió que edificase un templo en su nombre.
El primer edificio documentado en este lugar data del siglo IX, y esta iglesia habría sido respetada incluso por los musulmanes de Saraqusta. Tras la conquista cristiana de la ciudad por Alfonso I el Batallador se construyó una iglesia románica (de la que aún se conserva el tímpano de su portada, como veréis en el vídeo) en los siglos XII-XIII, y tras ésta se construyó otra en estilo gótico-mudéjar (ss. XIII-XVI), a la que pertenecía el impresionante retablo gótico-renacentistga de Damián Forment que aún hoy podemos admirar en el altar mayor de la Basílica.
El actual templo barroco se comenzó a finales del siglo XVII (1681) por los arquitectos Felipe Busiñac, Felipe Sánchez y Francisco de Herrera el Mozo. No se concluiría hasta nada menos que 1961, cuando se terminaron las dos torres de las esquinas que dan al río Ebro.

La Catedral-Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar de Zaragoza es un importante templo barroco de España. Según la tradición, se trata del primer templo mariano de la Cristiandad, puesto que en él se conserva y venera el pilar —en realidad, una columna de jaspe— que, según la tradición, fue puesto por la Virgen María quien, viviendo aún en Jerusalén, se habría aparecido en carne mortal al apóstol Santiago el día 2 de enero del año 40. Documentalmente no hay pruebas de lo consignado en la tradición, cuyos pormenores datan de 1297 —en una bula del papa Bonifacio VIII— y 1299 —una declaración de los Jurados de Zaragoza—, donde por primera vez se atestigua la advocación de «Santa María del Pilar», tras emprender en 1293 el obispo Hugo de Mataplana una rehabilitación del edificio que amenazaba ruina, gracias a las donaciones propiciadas por la mencionada bula papal
La historia documentada del templo se remonta al siglo IX, cuando según la Historia del traslado de San Vicente de Aimoino, se atestigua la existencia de una iglesia mozárabe en Saraqusta dedicada a Santa María en el mismo lugar en el que actualmente se encuentra la basílica barroca. En torno a este templo se articulaba una de las comunidades de cristianos de la ciudad.
Arquitectónicamente, el templo se articula en tres naves, de igual altura, cubiertas con bóvedas de cañón, en las que se intercalan cúpulas y bóvedas de plato, que descansan sobre robustos pilares. El exterior es de ladrillo, siguiendo la tradición de construcción en ladrillo aragonesa, y el interior revocado en estuco. La nave central se halla dividida por la presencia del altar mayor bajo la cúpula central. El altar está presidido por el gran retablo mayor de la Asunción, perteneciente a la Iglesia anterior, realizado por el escultor Damián Forment en el siglo XVI, siguiendo los modelos impuestos del retablo gótico de la vecina catedral zaragozana del Salvador (La Seo). Bajo las otras dos cúpulas elípticas de la nave central, se dispuso la Santa Capilla de la Virgen del Pilar, y el coro y órgano, que también procedían de la iglesia gótica predecesora. Actualmente se encuentran desplazados al tramo de los pies del templo, para dotar de mayor espacio a los fieles que ocupan la nave desde el altar mayor. El Pilar ostenta el rango de catedral desde la Bula de Unión de 1676, compartiendo desde entonces la sede del arzobispo de Zaragoza con la vecina catedral del Salvador -La Seo-. En 1948, el Papa Pío XII le concedió el título de Basílica. Es además desde 2007, uno de los 12 Tesoros de España.
La basílica del Pilar, junto con los santuarios de Torreciudad, Montserrat, Meritxell y Lourdes conforman la Ruta mariana, itinerario guiado por la espiritualidad y devoción mariana, poseedor de una gran riqueza patrimonial, gastronómica y natural.
