BASILICA DE LA MACARENA - Seville.MPG
On the northern tier of central Seville, the Basilica de la Macarena possesses the most revered image in Seville, The Virgin of Hope (Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza) which locals call La Macarena.
La Macarena is the patron saint of matadors and a favorite of Spanish gypsies. The Seville-born matador Joselito spent a large portion of his fortune to buy four emeralds for her statue. When he died in the ring in 1920, the Macarena dressed as a widow for a month.
The statue of La Macarena is attributed to the sculptor Pedro Roldán and thought to date from the end of the 17th century. Seated in a place of honor in the basilica, the beautiful Madonna statue is dressed in magnificent robes and jewels. Five teardrops run permanently down her elegant cheeks.
Each year on Good Friday, the holiest day of Semana Santa, the fraternity dedicated to La Macarena appears in procession, leading her image through the city streets in mourning for the death of her son.
The basilica also houses a treasury displaying rare ecclesiastical relics.

On our way from Plaza de Espana to the hotel in the old town, we pass the university, the Glorieta de San Diego and an exhibition pavilion, built for the Ibero-American Exhibition in 1929. After almost 3 weeks in Spain we urgently need a laundromat. We ask at the reception and one refers us to the department store El Corte Ingles, which is not too far away. Grabbing the laundry in a wheeled suitcase and go. We cross the Espacio Metropol Parasol and take Calle Laranna and Calle Martin Villa to Placa del Duque de la Victoria. We pass the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University, which is housed in a magnificent castle-like building. We have no luck. In the basement of El Corte Ingles is a cleaning but no laundromat. However we rely on the friendly staff who told us that we will find one in the Calle Goles.
We continue our way, have a look at the the Velazquez Monument and the Museo de Bellas Artes de Sevilla at Plaza del Museo.
At the Plaza de Armas with its huge halls for the Mercado and the Centro Commercial we begin to ask residents to the laundromat. Nobody knows one! A postwoman approached us. She ought to know the neighborhood, but she also didn't know one.
Frustrated we made the way back our hotel. In the Calle Alfonso XII we see a business travel agency and we still need tickets for the Alhambra in Granada. We read on the Internet that it is hard to get some and one should book early in advance. We had already tried, but in vain. Everything seems to be sold out for our travel dates!
Here we were lucky! We actually got two tickets for € 50 each. That seems expensive, but better safe than sorry. In Granada it should prove to be an error (see in a later report on Granada).
Then we asked if someone knows a laundromat in the city. In fact, a young man found one on the internet!
We took a taxi and drove to the indicated address and we were successful. It was a good one! (Washing 30 min €4,- , drying 20 min € 2,-)
In the Ronda de Capuchinos, on the ground floor next to a gas station of La Ronda Estacion de Servicios SA, is the laundromat with industrial washing machines and dryers. It is probably the only laundromat in Seville!
Since it would last about 1 hour we have time to take a walk.

Churches in Seville. THE BASILICA OF SANTA MARIA DE LA ESPERANZA MACARENA
The Basilica of Santa Maria de la Esperanza Macarena, popularly known as the Basilica of La Macarena, is a Catholic church located in the neighborhood of La Macarena in Seville (Spain). It is one of the most famous and frequented Marian temples in Seville. The principal Marian image, “La Esperanza de Macarena”, together with “Nuestra Señora del Rocío” in Huelva, and “La Esperanza de Triana” and “Nuestra Señora de los Reyes” the latter two in Seville are most widely venerated in Andalusia.
The Basilica of Macarena is the seat of the Hermandad de La Esperanza Macarena, a huge confraternity in Seville, which makes a penitent station in the early hours of Good Friday with the images of the Virgin of Esperanza Macarena and Nuestro Señor Jesus de la Sentencia.
Chapel of the Macarena
The altarpiece is neo-baroque and houses the Virgen de la Esperanza Macarena, an anonymous image of the late seventeenth or early eighteenth century.
The altarpiece was made in 1949 by Juan Pérez Calvo and Rafael Fernandez del Toro; the imagery is by Luis Ortega Bru from Cadiz and the goldwork is by Antonio Sánchez. The assembly has a height of 12 m and is available in two bodies and the attic depicts allegories of the three theological virtues (faith, hope and charity).
The decoration of the chapel of the Virgin was done by Fernando Marmolejo Camargo, as well as the silver covering of the dressing room simulating the front of a pallium, replacing the previous work of Juan Pérez Calvo.
Chapel of the Judgment
The first chapel on the left side is is dedicated to of Our Lord Jesus of the Sentencia. It is called as such for it shows Jesus silent after being sentenced to death . It is an image made to be dressed by Felipe Morales on 1654. The altarpiece is done by Calvo Pérez’s workshop in 1951, and is a donation of officials of the Ministry of Justice. It is Baroque-inspired.
Chapel of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary
It is a chapel to the right of the altar where the image of the Virgin of the Rosary with the Child Jesus is found. This image, of anonymous author, attributed by some studies to Pedro Duque Cornejo, is carried during the last Sunday of October in a massive procession through the streets of the neighborhood. Her beautiful and sweet countenance holding the peaceful, sleeping Baby Jesus, is a favorite among many Sevillians.

This mustard-yellow basilica is home to Seville’s most revered religious treasure, the Virgen de la Esperanza Macarena (Macarena Virgin of Hope), popularly known as the Macarena. This magnificent statue, a star of the city's fervent Semana Santa (Holy Week) celebrations, stands in splendour behind the main altarpiece, adorned with a golden crown, lavish vestments and five diamond-and-emerald brooches donated by the famous 20th-century matador Joselito El Gallo.

Catedral de Santa María de la Sede, Seville - Spain 4K Travel Channel
Our first way in the morning leads us to the cathedral of Seville. We have already heard a lot of this building, but as we stand in front of it, we are astonished by the dimensions. To get a sense of this building we first walk around it. In addition to the dimensions, the many filigree ornaments catch the eye.
The Seville Cathedral is the largest Gothic cathedral in the world and after St. Peter's Basilica in Rome and the Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida in Brazil the third-largest churches in the world. It is 115 m long, 43 m wide and and in the nave 42 m high.
Inside, the people lose themselves in this monumental building. If you consider that this Gothic cathedral was built from 1401 to 1519 asks oneself involuntarily, how this was possible for people with their modest technical aids.
After a first impression, we go to the tomb of Christopher Columbus, which is carried by four men. It actually contains the remains of the discoverer of America.
The Capital Mayor with the Retablo, a framed altarpiece with a gigantic show wall carved from wood in the background, impresses us most. It is the largest retable in the world, 23 m high and 20 m wide. The altar driven of silver and the 45 gold-painted relief images in the background make us speechless.
After leaving the cathedral we stand in front of the 104.5 meter high Giralda, the bell tower of the cathedral. It is the symbol of Seville.
The former Moorish minaret is the remainder of the 1184-built mosque. At the time of construction it was the third highest building in the world. Inside one could reach the height of 70 m even on horseback.
In 1928 the cathedral of Seville was classified as a historical monument and since 1987 it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
After the visit of the cathedral we are convinced that we have seen one of the most excellent cultural monuments of mankind.
