Acadia National Park in 4K - Bass Harbor Lighthouse!
Marking the entrance to Bass Harbor as well as Blue Hill Bay, the Bass Harbor Lighthouse on Mount Desert Island in Tremont, Maine was built in 1858. A fog bell and tower were added in 1876.
The lighthouse, situated on Acadia National Park land, stands 56 feet above mean high water and is accessible by car off of State Route 102A. The keeper's house is currently being used for Coast Guard housing.
As you arrive in the parking area, you will note a walking path to the left. This leads to a stairway that will take you down the face of the cliff to an oceanside observation area. The path to the right of the building leeds to a vantage point that provides a panoramic view of the ocean.
Only the grounds are open to the public. Occasional tours are conducted by the Tremont Historical Society. To inquire, call 207.244.9753.

Island Cruises - Bass Harbor, Maine 2009
We chose the lunch cruise that leaves at 11:00 am. This is a narrated nature cruise that also goes into the history of the Maine seacoast and islands.
It starts off the shore of old fish factory that is now condos. Then on to Bass Harbor Head Light. From there it goes to the small islands of Blue Hill Bay. All along the way are seagulls and cormorants. Bald eagles and harbor seals.
Then lunch at the Dockside Deli in the village of Frenchboro. We had Grilled cheese sandwiches with ham, a container of homemade potatoe salad and 2 cokes for ten dollars and change.
On the way back the captain pulled a couple lobster pots and explained how it is done.
It was a wonderful clear day and we could see for miles. For us, this trip made our vacation.
We saw - Porpoise, seals, ocean birds, bald eagles, lighthouses - on the island which only has 50 people living on it (they make there living on Lobster fishing)
Very Highly recommend - don't get stuck going on a cruise in bar harbor, you will find this place in Bass Harbor.
