Bateria De Castillitos - The Guns of Mazarron.
In the 1920s the headland of Cabo Tinoso was deemed to be of vital importance in the defence of the western approaches to the port of Cartagena. Planned by General Primo de Rivera, the construction of four forts was begun in 1926 and the big guns were installed between 1932 -1936.
Without doubt, the most impressive of the forts is the Bateria de Castillitos which is home to two enormous guns, together with their magazines, lookout points and control rooms. These guns represented cutting-edge technology of the time and were considered to be amongst the finest anti-naval guns then in existence. They were two of the biggest ever produced by their British manufacturer, Vickers, and were made in their Barrow-in-Furness factory in 1927 and 1928. They have a barrel length of 59 feet, a calibre of 15 inches and could hurl a projectile, weighing 1950lbs, some 20 miles at a speed of 2500 feet per second. Each gun weighs about 88 tons. Opinion seems to be divided as to whether or not they were ever used against an enemy. Some sources maintain that in April 1937, during the Spanish Civil War, they were fired at a group of Nationalist cruisers by Republican forces. The guns proved to be such a formidable deterrent that they were never needed again and eventually became obsolete. (Cartagena's coastal defenses however, gave it little protection from air raids and the city was heavily bombed by German and Italian aircraft supporting the Nationalists under General Franco.)
A curious aspect of the Bateria de Castillitos is that although these fortifications were made from local stone and designed to blend in with the landscape, the architects could not resist using a modernist style that was fashionable at the time. Thus, these constructions were rendered almost whimsical in appearance and are more reminiscent of Walt Disney than hard-nosed military power. Copied from Hubpages.com

The Battery of Castillitos , also well - known like C-1 , is a Spanish fortification of support of coastal artillery located in Cabo Tiñoso , inside the municipal term of Cartagena ( Region of Murcia ), and more concretely in the county council of Perín . It was declared of Cultural Interest on August 7 , 1997 .
The battery was built and guns between 1933 and 1936 according to how it was projected in the year 1926 , during the program of endowing of a defensive belt to the strategic place of Cartagena by the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera . Castillitos was endowed with two coast guns of the British company Vickers-Armstrongs , of the model 38,1 / 45 cm (fifteen inches ). These pieces had enough power to fire a projectile of almost a ton to 35 kilometers.
His job was to protect the entrance to the bay of Cartagena next to his twin, the Battery of Ashes located in Cape Negrete, in a crossfire that prevented the entrance of hostile elements. During the Spanish Civil War it carried out a discharge against the fleet of the rebellious side in April of 1937 , although the presence of the fortifications that surrounded the city was enough to intimidate the rebel ships.
After the war, in 1942 a new direction of firing was added and support was studied with rangefinders and graphometers placed strategically, although finally it was desisted. It remained in service until 1994 , when the NORTE Plan was applied , which sought a greater use of the resources of the Armed Forces . Since then the battery was abandoned and suffered a progressive deterioration, with its guns unused, until in 2009 the Ministry of Environment decided to make an investment with which the fortification was restored and made visitable.
Castillitos is located at a height of 250 meters, and its facade was built imitating a medieval castle , following a historicist style with influences of eclecticism and modernism , currents in vogue at that time. The architecture of the battery tends to be hidden by digging in the mountains or imitating the texture of the rock to prevent its view from afar. Once inside the complex, each piece of artillery has an engine room, gunpowder stores and spare parts and a loading chamber.
